Content Marketing

is a term used to describe “the creation and sharing of content in order to engage current and potential consumer bases”, which is really just a lofty way to say intelligent content development. Basic premise is to:

  1. Understand your audience (their likes, dislikes, behaviour, personality, etc.)
  2. Understand their content platforms preference (Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, etc.)
  3. Create compelling pieces of content (videos, posts, articles, stories, etc.)
  4. Release relevant pieces of content on appropriate channels (platforms)
  5. Engage consumers in order to have them interact with the content (read this)

Think you don't need content marketing because of your niche industry? Think again. MedCity, the Cleveland, Ohio-based startup covering life science innovation and the B2B medical health community, has used content to increase its monthly website traffic from 100k to 300k.

Some great tips from CEO Chris Seper:

-Ask your audience what they want

-Be "insane on metrics"

-"Serve and monetize your audience" as best as you possibly can by being realistic and opening your mind to new distribution methods.

The Scoop On Content Curation & Scoop. It

The Scoop On Content Curation & Scoop.It | Writing_me | Scoop.it

Once Snip. It pulled the plug on the content curation site, thereby pulling the rug out from under the feet of content curators like myself, I began speaking with the fine folks at Scoop.It.

Guillaume Decugis's comment, February 12, 2013 3:55 PM
Hi Robin. I know you have infinite curiosity which is a great quality for curators ;-) Just like some other successful companies in our space (HootSuite, SlideShare...), there are multiple reasons for us not to communicate on that in spite of having traction and success. To give you more insights, I would actually argue that growth rates on these numbers are actually more important than the absolute values themselves. Our traffic, usage and revenue are all growing at the same pace and have done x5 in 1 year. More importantly, in spite of being a significant scale with now 6m+ monthly uniques and close to 400,000 professionals and businesses with a Scoop.it account, it doesn't give any signs of slowing down (while we have many opportunities to catch and improvements to make). And without trying to pick on them but just to give a sense of perspective, we're about 20x the size snip.it had before they shut down. This is not to say we'll rest on our laurels: we're committed to make constant improvements to serve our community better and go much further so stay tuned for more updates!

How Google Author Rank could change content marketing… and journalism

How Google Author Rank could change content marketing… and journalism | Writing_me | Scoop.it
Here’s a little piece of SEO nerdery that affects us all: Google is using Google+ to influence search results in a big way, and brands and media organizations alike have yet to wake up to the...

Via Guillaume Decugis
Alessandro Rea's insight:

Erin Griffith analyzes how the use of authorships combined with Google+ is now impacting Google search results.

This change is not new but, as she puts it, it is significant: "Google was always about the algorithm, not curation, certainly not curation through something as, well, human as a social network. The emphasis before was about what was on the page not who wrote it."

While she focuses on the new importance of authorship given by Google, what's happening is actually a mix of a couple of things which are in my opinion equally good:

  1. Authorship
  2. Social results

#1 means that an identified, reputable author will prevail; #2 is part of the social signal that Google uses more and more to rank results and that builds on curators' activity.

Bottom line is that - as I predicted a while ago - the age of low-quality content cheaply produced by random anonymous writers in content farms for pure SEO purposes is over. By combining a measure of the author's influence as well as taking into account curators' appetite for a piece of content, Google is bringing quality back in the game. Which is good for authors, curators and... readers.

Laura Brown's comment, January 28, 2013 1:49 AM

How Paying for Good Content Can Be Better Than Paying for Keywords - Socialize Your Stuff

How Paying for Good Content Can Be Better Than Paying for Keywords - Socialize Your Stuff | Writing_me | Scoop.it

"SEO “experts” are working hard to understand the tricks and techniques of optimizing search results. But you don’t need lay awake at night worrying about it. The fact is that Google is doing everything they can to find and index good content. And all you need to do is give it to them."

Martin (Marty) Smith's curator insight, January 5, 2013 8:04 AM

SEO Muscle Memory
I'm a former SEO. I guess that definition applies since organic SEO was worth millions when I was a Director of Ecommerce. I spent a week in Mill Valley CA with SEO Guru Bruce Clay and know the tricks Alley's Scoop refers to and I agree. There was a time when optimization alone could win. That was a different time in important ways:

* Less noise, less competition for top listings.

* SEO "Tricks" weren't known by a large population.

* That was the way Google structured the game.

What Navneet Panda, Google's brilliant engineer, did in modifying Google's algorithm changed everything. Google was in danger of being flooded by social signals and User Generated Content. Not so much now.

Social signals + the Google float, an innovation Google originally created to expand ad inventory, became a lifesaver and a heart breaker. It is or will be impossible to optimize a website into Google top listing now (or soon).

People think of Google as this monolith, the all-knowing OZ. Not so much. Google indexes pages and keywords. I was asked the other day to win a tit for tat keyword battle and it was winnable NOW in the old way. Soon, as that vertical gets more sophisticated over time (and they all do), the ability to optimize into a SEO win will disappear.

There is the tricky rub. Muscle memory says, to the person who asked for the old kind of help, we should be able to optimize to victory. Sorry, not so much anymore. Time to learn a new dance. Time to tell great stories. Time to win hearts and minds because that is the only way to SEO now.

I wrote about the end of one approach, something I called "small ball SEO" and the beginning of another (great stories well told on a User Generated Content rich social platform) recently:

Imagination, Money And Internet Marketing
http://scenttrail.blogspot.com/2012/12/imagination-money-and-internet-marketing.html

BTW, I turned down the tit for tat SEO job. Life is way too short for such nonsense. Teams I've managed have profitably made more than $30M online with Average Order Values (AOVs) of around $60 so LOTS of transactions.

I share that stat because if you were to ask me the most important idea in creating so much value here is my answer:

DO WHAT GOOGLE TELLS YOU TO DO!

It is the most miserable day of the year, we are told, but is there any data to supports the claim?

If you haven’t yet heard, 21 January is Blue Monday, supposedly the most miserable day of the year. For the past few years, companies have found ways to link this day – the third Monday in January – to their products for press releases in the hope of getting coverage. Meanwhile, the media keenly discusses why this particular day is so wretched, often accompanied by pictures of people looking unhappy in the rain.

Facebook pages are probably some of the best and worst things to happen to businesses. If you do it right, you're likely to gain lots of fans, engagement, and, hopefully, customers. If you do it wrong, though, you're bound to become the laughing stock of the social media community.

In all honesty, it's hard to come up with the best way to manage a brand Facebook page, especially for a startup, but Luca Hammer has done a pretty great job here.

He divides the article into "Great" practices, "Good" practices, and "Ugly" practices. Before you go trying anything and everything that just might work for your startup on Facebook, take a look at this post and pick up a few tips that could help you build your strategy.
