Against line-chart liberalism | Just Well Mixed

Against line-chart liberalism | Just Well Mixed | Scriveners' Trappings | Scoop.it
This is a feeling that communicators and advocates have to move past to be effective. You have to reach out to people as they are, not as you would wish them to be. And framing your message with charts and data alone just does not accomplish that. Charts and data can support a narrative, but they cannot replace it. If you try to force them into doing so, you just cut yourself off from most of the people you are hoping to reach.

So this is my plea to you, dear progressive communicator: think hard about how you approach your work, about how you construct the messages you are trying to change minds with. Line-chart liberalism may be trendy, but it is also a dead end.

Jim Lerman's insight:

Brilliant, just brilliant.

This Sheep Is Mapping The Faroe Islands By Wandering Around With A Camera

This Sheep Is Mapping The Faroe Islands By Wandering Around With A Camera | Scriveners' Trappings | Scoop.it

"How do you get Google to visit your small, remote island group with its Street View vehicles, and digitize your roads for the benefit of locals and tourists alike? If you are the Faroe Islands, then you exploit your local resources to roll your own Street View, in the hopes of attracting Google's attention. Behold: Sheep View 360, a solar-powered 360-degree camera, mounted on a sheep's back. Sheep View takes advantage of one great Street View feature: You can upload your own images to Google's service. So Durita Dahl Andreassen, working for the tourist site Visit Faroe Islands, decided to kick-start the Faroe Islands' entry by putting the camera on a sheep and letting it wander free, then uploading the photos."

Jim Lerman's insight:

This is such a rich story; using technology in a pre-industrial way to exploit the attractions of an isolated set of islands. This could make a marvelous multi-disciplinary inquiry and I can just imagine students mounting cameras on their pets to tell the stories of their neighborhoods.

A Finder's Guide To Facts | Scriveners' Trappings | Scoop.it
If this guide helps you to find some reliable information, that's great — but remember one more thing: Never stop looking. Learning the truth is not a goal, but a process. As a journalist, I can never express everything in the world in a single day's program. The saving grace is tomorrow's program, when we try to do a little more. It is the same for me as a news consumer: I will always be learning more.

Create Animated Videos with Plotagon's Animate Your Classroom - Class Tech Tips

Create Animated Videos with Plotagon's Animate Your Classroom - Class Tech Tips | Scriveners' Trappings | Scoop.it
How are you using videos in your classroom? The folks at Plotagon Education have an awesome iOS app for teachers and students called Animate Your Classroom. This app was designed to make it super easy for educators and their students to create their very own videos using a mobile device. Perfect for any age level of subject area, Plotagon can be used to create animated videos that are totally shareable. This particular app was designed especially for schools making it perfect for educators looking to introduce students to a new way to create media.

One phrase you may have heard me use is tasks before apps. When I’m talking to teachers about technology tools I love to focus on apps like Animate Your Classroom that place the power to create in students’ hands. There is no one way to use this app. Instead, teachers can design a variety of tasks that give students the power to make a product that demonstrates their understanding. This is where Animate Your Classroom comes into play.

MFaculty's curator insight, January 7, 2017 8:34 AM
Give your students the opportunity to publish their work to a larger audience, and ignight their interest in writing well! Particularly in genre such as fiction, poetry, and areas of self expression, students need more than their audience of one (you).
Here is a simple means for sharing beyond you; and if they solicit feedback, they can improve their writing and perhaps find an untapped outlet for self expression!
Heriberto Manriquez's curator insight, June 14, 2018 2:20 PM
When Google Slides assists with even publishing eBooks with team members. It is more than just creating an eBook when it comes to collaborating with your team members to work on a project.

How Robots in English Class Can Spark Empathy and Improve Writing

How Robots in English Class Can Spark Empathy and Improve Writing | Scriveners' Trappings | Scoop.it
Mention robots to many English teachers and they’ll immediately point down the hall to the science classroom or to the makerspace, if they have one. At many schools, if there’s a robot at all, it’s located in a science or math classroom or is being built by an after-school robotics club. It’s not usually a fixture in English classrooms. But as teachers continue to work at finding new entry points to old material for their students, robots are proving to be a great interdisciplinary tool that builds collaboration and literacy skills.

“For someone like me who teaches literature by lots of dead white guys, teaching programming adds relevance to my class,” said Jessica Herring, a high school English teacher at Benton High School in Arkansas. Herring first experimented using Sphero, essentially a programmable ball, when her American literature class was studying the writing of early settlers. Herring pushed the desks back and drew a maze on the floor with tape representing the journey from Europe to the New World. Her students used class iPads and an introductory manually guided app to steer their Spheros through the maze.

Herring, like many English teachers, was skeptical about how the Sphero robot could be a useful teaching tool in her classroom. She thought that type of technology would distract students from the core skills of reading, writing and analyzing literature. But she decided to try it after hearing about the success of another English teacher across the country.
