Wondering how to succeed in online classes ❓ In this infographic, you'll find 6 must-have skills of a successful online student ➕ steps to develop them & useful tools.
"As the "oldest, largest, and most popular online bookstore dedicated to African-American and Black literature from around the world," the African American Literature Book Club (AALBC) is a rich source of top-quality literature and more. Founded and managed by award-winning educator and public speaker Troy Johnson, AALBC provides numerous useful resources. Clicking "Authors" in the menu at the top of the page provides visitors with profiles of over 5,000 Black authors and illustrators. In the same menu there are book and film reviews ("Reviews"), lists of noteworthy and bestselling books ("Books"), and a discussion forum for the #readingblack campaign ("Discussion"), which encourages the consumption of books by Black authors. AALBC also coordinates with events promoting Black literature ("Events"), including book fairs, literary festivals, conferences and conventions, award shows, and more. Finally, the "Resources" page includes links to services for readers, such as lists of Black-owned bookstores, newspapers, websites, and blogs; book clubs across the U.S., Canada, and the U.S. Virgin Islands; and author resources such as manuscript editing, book printing, and beyond. Scholars of literature, Black and African American history and culture, and sociology, as well as readers seeking to expand their understanding of the Black experience, will find AALBC to be a comprehensive and impeccably-curated collection of knowledge and culture which demonstrates that "Black literature is for everyone."
In your dream classroom, what does a good discussion look like? For the longest time, my dream resembled a scene from Dead Poets Society. I pictured myself facilitating lively conversations about literature, with energized students speaking up, sharing insights, talking through difficult ideas, and working toward new understandings.
In reality, the reading discussions in my English classes were much more muted. Even the best ones were dominated by a few outgoing students and one loud teacher.
I knew I needed to make some changes, beginning with how I perceived a “good” discussion.
I assumed—incorrectly—that a good discussion must be verbal. By doing so, I excluded quiet students and others who wanted to contribute but needed more time to process new information.
With those students in mind, I began offering more opportunities to engage with reading outside of whole-class discussions, including low-stakes writing such as freewriting, journaling, and chat app conversations.
Those opportunities helped, but I saw the most engagement by introducing collective notes.
Jim Lerman's insight:
Secondary Level. A clever and engaging way to get more students involved in classroom thought-sharing.
IT DOESN’T MATTER whether you’re drafting a company-wide memo, struggling through a school assignment, or working on your first novel. Writing is never effortless. It takes work. If you’re here, you already know this. Luckily, there are a few hacks to improve the writing (or post-writing) process.
I have spent much of the past decade as a freelance writer. In doing so, I’ve had to come up with tricks and ways to use technology to assist me along the way. This includes things like learning how to better edit myself to finding who has shared my published work later on. Writing may not be easy, but it doesn’t need to be impossible either.
On Microsoft Word, tables are essential formatting tools. Microsoft Office has made it easier to create and format basic tables in Microsoft Word for Office 365, Word 2019, Word 2016, and Word 2013.
We haven't covered tables as much as we would have liked to. It's time to correct that, as the number of people asking questions on how to format tables properly is piling up. Maybe these eight table tips can be an appetizer. You just cannot create beautiful Microsoft Word documents by cutting corners on tables—here's how to format tables in Word.
By the way, it's possible to get a free copy of Microsoft Word, should you need one.
"So you love what you’re seeing about hexagonal thinking around the web, but you just can’t quite wrap your head around getting started with this creative discussion strategy. I hear you! I’ve been getting lots of great questions about how to make a set of hexagons for a first go-round, and I’m going to answer them all in this episode.
Get ready to find out all the details about what to put on, who should put it on, and who should be doing the cutting out!
When it comes to the first day of school, what you want is a rock solid activity you can enjoy from the background. Or is that just me? There’s enough stress around that first day already, no need to stand in the spotlight trying to hold everyone’s attention for forty-five minutes.
So today I have a quick and fun activity for you (apologies for the lack of a podcast this week, I’ve been really sick all week, so we’re going short and sweet today!).
Why not try hexagonal identity one-pagers? While I still love the name tent one-pagers I’ve always pushed for on day one, you can do a fun version of them by having kids share about themselves on a hexagon shaped one-pager instead. The extension here is that they can then connect their work to the work of the rest of the class in an epic web up on the wall.
I’ve been seeing lots of teachers experimenting with using hexagonal thinking to help kids get to know each other in different ways, with and without the graphic elements of the one-pager, and this is my twist!
Creating a classroom magazine is a great way to engage students in learning and enhance a sense of community in class. A Class magazine can be a place to spotlight students work, publish scholarly research, share school news and learning tips, publish key class/school announcements, connect with parents and the school community, and many more.
Most importantly, a class magazine is a tool of students empowerment. By providing students with a venue to showcase their scholarly productions and connect with the world outside their classroom, students feel that their voice matters and that it is valued thus driving them to actively engage in meaningful learning experiences.
"A flexible, eight-unit program based on the real-world features found in newspapers, from editorials and reviews to personal narratives, profiles and podcasts.
"What can the news, features, essays, interviews, photos, videos, podcasts and graphics in The New York Times teach your students about composing for a real audience? So much, we hope, that the units we detail below are just a beginning.
"Our annual writing curriculum is both a road map for teachers and an invitation to students. For teachers, it organizes our offerings — lesson plans, writing prompts, mentor texts and student contests — into eight distinct units, each of which focuses on a different genre of writing that your students can find not just in The Times but in all kinds of real-world sources.
"For students, it offers confirmation that they have something valuable to say, a wide range of choice in how to say it, and a global audience eager to listen. Promoting student voice has always been a pillar of our site, but in these extraordinary times we think it is critical. Through the opportunities for publication woven throughout each unit, we want to encourage students to go beyond simply consuming media to becoming creators themselves.
"Though our offerings are aimed at middle and high school students, we know that they are used up and down levels and across subjects — from elementary school to college. So have a look, and see if you can find a way to include any of these opportunities in your curriculum this year, whether to help students document their lives, tell stories, express opinions, investigate ideas, interview fascinating people or analyze culture. We can’t wait to hear what they have to say!"
And as any teacher of literacy knows (so, all teachers), once readers reach adolescence and are still struggling, whether it’s with phonemic awareness, oral fluency, or critical reading strategies, the social and confidence issues swell alongside those literacy-based. This makes resources that can actually help them without embarrassing them or making them feel like a struggling reader all the more critical.
So then, this list–apps, chrome extensions, and website-based tools that can help address the unique needs of a struggling adolescent reader as they progress towards not just independent reading, but a lifelong love of literacy.
In general, the iOS version of each is given below but in a some of the cases, we included the Android version from the Google Play Store or the tool developer’s website itself.
"After teaching for 20 years across grade levels from kindergarten to sixth grade, how can I use my own reflections on community to create a space where my students feel truly connected? How do I define classroom community?
"For me, community in a classroom means each individual is seen, valued, and heard first. When everyone feels they are appreciated and welcomed into the space, the next layer of community includes rituals and routines that everyone takes part in and provides a group identity. This could and should involve feelings of joy and fun. In community, you are valued for who you are but also belong to something larger than yourself. How can I help every student feel they belong to our classroom community? How can writing play a role in forging a community of learners?
Here are some of my favorite ways to build a community of writers:"
Sometimes, you may need to create a semantic map or diagram, but don’t don’t really like some of the tools available in Google. But don’t worry; there are some fantastic tools you can take advantage of. What’s more, most of these tools will save diagrams straight to Google Drive.
As Stephen Covey says, "Begin with the end in mind." As you start off your writing program this year, perhaps keep in mind an end-of-year survey like this as a way to help guide your planning.
"You've given your students helpful writing feedback all year long. Now it's time to reverse roles.
Before summer break, survey your students about their learning experiences. Students will reflect on their progress and growth as writers, and you'll receive first-hand accounts of what worked and what didn't work in your classroom."
Writing is many things, but dramatic isn’t often one of them. So it’s funny how many movies there are about writers. Historical writers. Fictional writers. Famous writers. Failed writers. Poets and playwrights, novelists and screenwriters. Sometimes, it’s a famous author’s famously weird off-page life that captivates us (lookin’ at you, William Burroughs) or a history of personal tragedy or political persecution. Sometimes, it’s a more ineffable fascination with the creative process itself. Maybe it’s always that. Perhaps not unsurprisingly, there are vast numbers of writer movies that are just not very good. (There’s only so much smoking and hair pulling you can watch, and quite often, writers just aren’t all that dramatically compelling.) But filmmakers and scriptwriters are devoted enough to the idea to have come up with a whole lot of ways to portray the numinous, and sometimes wildly dysfunctional, thing that is being an author. Here are 20 movies exploring the life of the writer.
Last year, an English teacher at my school came to me with an all-too-common concern about an essay a student named Kyle had just turned in. The teacher’s 10th grade class had just finished op-ed essays on a topic of their choice, and Kyle had chosen to examine the economic impact of illegal immigration on the U.S. economy. But in his submitted draft every source in his bibliography—and I do mean every—leaned toward one political bias, and sometimes quite heavily.
Hexagonal thinking is a rich new way to inspire discussion. Now, if you’re like me, high school geometry was about as appealing as high school cafeteria beef stroganoff, and you’re not too sure about this whole math-English crossover thing.
Don’t give up! Hexagonal thinking is a really unique way to get kids thinking about connections they might never otherwise make.
When you give kids a series of ideas on hexagons, and ask them to connect the cards into a web with clear reasons for each connection, you get them thinking critically, debating, giving evidence, and basically, lighting up a whole bunch of parts of their brains. Each card could connect to six others, or just to one or two. Every person in every group will have a different concept of how things could connect. There will be no right answer.
Are you interested in teaching with our daily writing prompts? In this guide, you’ll learn practical strategies from a dozen teachers, and we’ll walk you through the steps on how you can get started.
Every school day we post a new question that invites students to read an article from The New York Times and respond with their own ideas and opinions. Teachers tell us our Student Opinion questions are a good opportunity to bring current events into the classroom and allow students to practice writing for an authentic audience.
"Not all the writing your students do needs to be in formal, graded assignments.
"In fact, most should occur in low-stakes situations, where students can brainstorm, wonder, create, practice, reflect, and apply skills without fear of grades or criticism.
A writer’s notebook offers the perfect canvas for such writing. Writing in a paper or digital notebook for 10–20 minutes a day helps students build a writing identity, gather topic ideas, and experiment with new skills and techniques.
What is a writer's notebook?
"As ELA teacher Jeff Anderson explains, a writer’s notebook differs from a writing folder or portfolio, which mostly contains polished pieces:
“Writing folders are great for holding finished pieces or parts of pieces in process, but the notebook holds a progressive record of the year and keeps all those scraps and loose-end responses sewn together, a deposit of gold that can be mined all year long.”
Anderson shares some awesome ideas for setting up and using writing notebooks in his excellent book, Mechanically Inclined.
"Below we share our favorite ideas and show how to set up writers' notebooks for your classroom."
Google Docs has a host of powerful features that are available for users for free. Some of these features are overlooked by our students which minimizes the educational potential of this platform. A few weeks ago I started a series of posts shedding light on Docs features that are integral to students learning. The purpose is to help students make the best of Docs in their learning.
"So many of us dreamed about redesigning school this year, but didn’t get as far in our thinking as we might have wanted. But there is still time to think through some big questions: What would it be like to approach learning differently? What happens when teachers design learning opportunities around what brings joy and inspires passion? What if schools approach access and equity by supporting youth as agents in their own learnings? Over the last few years, teachers across the country have become LRNG Innovators by taking up these questions and more. Find inspiration in this collection of stories and reflections on what they learned."
"With the abrupt shift to online learning brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic, hyperdocs such as Google Docs have garnered a lot of attention due to their ubiquity, ease of use, and collaborative features. Perhaps lesser explored are the possibilities that Google Jamboards offer.
"What are Google Jamboards? Google Jamboards are collaborative, digital whiteboards that offer a host of possibilities for the online or blended language learning classroom. Personally, I have found Jamboards an excellent alternative to Google Docs and much more functional than the whiteboard tool offered in Zoom. "
"Best talk on storytelling I've seen. If you're into storytelling, don't know Matthew Dicks and his "homework for life" you'll probably like it as well."
