(1) The United Nations is an international organization founded in 1945.  It is currently made up of 193 Member States.  The UN also provides a forum for its members to express their views in the General Assembly, the Security Council, the Economic and Social Council, and other bodies and committees. The UN's Chief Administrative Officer is the Secretary-General. This year, 2015, marks the 70th anniversary of the United Nations. (2) The United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA) works closely with governments and stakeholders to help countries around the world meet their economic, social and environmental goals. As the Secretariat entity responsible for the development pillar of the United Nations, our work addresses a range of cross-cutting issues that affect peoples’ lives and livelihoods. UNDESA’s work is guided by the United Nations development agenda. Furthermore, with a focus on equitable participation by all people, the United Nations development agenda has unique, universal legitimacy.  Our vision for human progress goes beyond promoting global agreements and is fundamentally about action. Working closely with governments and other partners, DESA seeks concrete solutions. (3) The Division for Social Policy and Development (DSPD) is part of the Department of Economic and Social Affairs (DESA) of the United Nations Secretariat. The main objective of the Division for Social Policy and Development (DSPD) is to strengthen international cooperation for social development, in the context of the comprehensive and detailed framework of commitments and policies for action by Governments, intergovernmental and nongovernmental organizations provided by the Copenhagen Declaration on Social Development and Programme of Action of the World Summit for Social Development, with particular attention to the three core issues of poverty eradication, employment generation and social integration, in contributing to the creation of an international community that enables the building of secure, just, free and harmonious societies offering opportunities and higher standards of living for all. The Division’s work is vital for the social pillar of sustainable development. (4) The Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) is the United Nations’ central platform for reflection, debate, and innovative thinking on sustainable development. Mandate - ECOSOC, one of the six main organs of the United Nations established by the UN Charter in 1946, is the principal body for coordination, policy review, policy dialogue and recommendations on economic, social and environmental issues, as well as for implementation of the internationally agreed development goals. ECOSOC serves as the central mechanism for the activities of the United Nations system and its specialized agencies, and supervises the subsidiary and expert bodies in the economic, social and environmental fields. ECOSOC has undergone reforms (A/RES/61/16, A/RES/68/1) in the last decade to strengthen the Council and its working methods, giving special attention to the integrated and coordinated implementation of, and follow-up to, the outcomes of all major United Nations conferences summits in the economic, social, environmental and related fields. Functions - ECOSOC engages a wide variety of stakeholders – policymakers, parliamentarians, academics, major groups, foundations, business sector representatives and 3,200+ registered non-governmental organizations – in a productive dialogue on sustainable development through a programmatic cycle of meetings. (5) UNSDN serves as a unique global portal for social development that: - Provides a one-stop shop that provides information and knowledge on social development; - Provides an interactive platform for stakeholders to share documents, lessons on best practices and develop joint work platforms; - Showcases new and innovative projects in social development; - Promotes capacity-building in developing countries and economies in transition by promoting knowledge and information in the area of social development; - Assists Member States to help achieve the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). (6) The United Nations Non-Governmental Liaison Service (UN-NGLS) promotes constructive relations between the United Nations and civil society through dynamic partnerships to foster greater coherence around cross-cutting and emerging issues on the UN’s agenda and by facilitating meaningful civil society engagement in UN processes. Drawing on its inter-agency nature and UN system-wide perspective, UN-NGLS provides strategic information, analysis and support to a wide range of constituencies, using its unique convening and networking capacity to strengthen multistakeholder dialogue and alliance-building on core UN issues.

Latest edition of the Journal

The Journal of the United Nations
is published by the Journal Unit of the Department for General Assembly and Conference Management. It is issued daily in English and in French. During the main part of the General Assembly session (September to December), it is also issued in Arabic, Chinese, Russian, and Spanish.

The Journal is a complete picture and an historical record of the life of United Nations Headquarters on any given day – what meetings are being held, when and where, what topics are being discussed and what documents are the basis of those discussions. It gives a complete list of official documents issued that day, which can be accessed via hyperlink, and a summary of the meetings of the previous day. The Journal also includes a listing of Secretariat Web sites that can be accessed via hyperlink. For all delegates and staff, the Journal of the United Nations is required reading first thing in the morning.

On 10 January 1946, the first Journal of the United Nations was published on the occasion of the first session of the General Assembly in London, United Kingdom. The tradition continues! In pursuance of the efforts of the Department to move from printed to electronic formats, the Journal is posted on the Official Document System and on the Internet. Interested users can follow us on Twitter and Facebook, or subscribe! Past issues of the Journal dating back to 1 January 2003 are accessible through the search function below.

United Nations

The United Nations is an international organization founded in 1945 after the Second World War by 51 countries committed to maintaining international peace and security, developing friendly relations among nations and promoting social progress, better living standards and human rights.

Funds and Programmes

The Funds and Programmes were created by the United Nations to meet needs not envisaged at San Francisco, such as Palestine refugees, development assistance, food aid, or the environment. They are subordinate to the United Nations, but since they are immediately controlled by distinct inter-governmental bodies and derive most of their financial resources from other sources than the United Nations budgets, they are somewhat more akin to specialized agencies than to "subsidiary organs" such as UN commissions and committees. Moreover, as their activities are more operational and carried out at field level, they have needs dictated by an environment quite different from that of headquarter-centered administrations. The Programmes and Funds apply UN rules and regulations in the realm of administration and personnel. UNRWA reports only to the General Assembly.

Specialized Agencies

Specialized agencies are legally independent international organizations with their own rules, membership, organs and financial resources, were brought into relationship with the United Nations through negotiated agreements. Some of the agencies existed before the First World War, some were associated with the League of Nations, others were created almost simultaneously with the United Nations and yet others were created by the United Nations itself to meet emerging needs. Specialized agencies work with the UN and each other through the coordinating machinery of ECOSOC at the intergovernmental level, and through the Chief Executives Board for Coordination (CEB) at the inter-secretariat level.

Regional Commissions

Regional Commissions are the regional outposts of the United Nations and represent an integral part of the regional institutional landscape. Stationed in five regions of the world, they share the key objectives of aiming to foster economic integration at the sub-regional and regional levels, promoting the regional implementation of internationally agreed development goals, including the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), and to support regional sustainable development by contributing to bridging economic, social and environmental gaps among their member countries and sub-regions.

United Nations Research and Training Institutes

The various research and training institutes were established by the General Assembly to perform independent research and training. One former institute, the International Research and Training Institute for the Advancement of Women (INSTRAW), was merged with other elements of the United Nations system into a new organization, UN Women, in January 2011. UNIDIR reports only to the General Assembly.

Jointly Financed Bodies

Jointly Financed Bodies are administrative organizational units of the United Nations common system financed on an inter-agency basis. In addition to the Chief Executives Board for Coordination itself, these include the following:

Related Organizations

The term Related Organization has to be understood as a default expression, describing organizations whose cooperation agreement with the United Nations has many points in common with that of Specialized Agencies, but does not refer to Article 57 and 63 of the United Nations Charter, relevant to Specialized Agencies. Nonetheless, these organizations are part and parcel of the work of CEB.

IAEA reports to the Security Council and the General Assembly. WTO has no reporting obligation to the General Assembly (GA) but contributes on an ad-hoc basis to GA and ECOSOC work inter alia on finance and developmental issues.IAEA reports to the Security Council and the General Assembly. Other Entities

Chief Executives Board for Coordination

The United Nations System Chief Executives Board for Coordination (CEB) is the main instrument for supporting and reinforcing the coordinating role of the United Nations intergovernmental bodies on social, economic and related matters. On behalf of 29 member organizations, the CEB carries out its role through three high-level committees.

United Nations Development Group

The UNDG is the third pillar of the CEB responsible for coordinating operational activities at the country level. The UNDG complements the work of the High Level Committee on Programmes on policy and programme topics and the High Level Committee on Management on management and administrative issues.

High-level Committee on Programmes

The High-Level Committee on Programmes promotes system-wide cooperation, coordination and knowledge sharing in programme and operational areas.

Bookmarks related to the High-level Committee on Programmes (HLCP):

High-level Committee on Management

The HLCM identifies and analyzes administrative management reforms with the aim of improving efficiency and simplifying business practices. Its work is carried out in the main through task-forces of experts in given administrative areas, whose work is guided by HLCM.

Inter-agency Coordination Mechanisms

The Chief Executives Board and its subsidiary mechanisms take into account the many coordination and inter-agency networks already in existence. These groups do not fall under the hierarchical structure but may be classified by their sphere of activity.

Secretariat

The Secretariat, one of the main organs of the UN, is organized along departmental lines, with each department or office having a distinct area of action and responsibility. Offices and departments coordinate with each other to ensure cohesion as they carry out the day to day work of the Organization in offices and duty stations around the world.  At the head of the United Nations Secretariat is the Secretary-General.

The United Nations and Decolonization - Trusteeship Council

The United Nations and Decolonization
Trusteeship Council

The Trusteeship Council, one of the main organs of the United Nations, was established under Chapter XIII of the Charter to supervise the administration of Trust Territories and to ensure that Governments responsible for their administration took adequate steps to prepare them for the achievement of the Charter goals.

The Charter authorizes the Trusteeship Council to examine and discuss reports from the Administering Authority on the political, economic, social and educational advancement of the peoples of Trust Territories; to examine petitions from the Territories; and to undertake special missions to the Territories.

To date, all Trust Territories have attained self-government or independence, either as separate States or by joining neighbouring independent countries. In 1994, the Security Council terminated the United Nations Trusteeship Agreement for the last of the original 11 Territories on its agenda - the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands (Palau), administered by the United States.

The Trusteeship Council, by amending its rules of procedure, will now meet as and where occasion may require.

United Nations Security Council
The Security Council
In Brief...
  • 15 members: five permanent members with veto power and ten non-permanent members, elected by the General Assembly for a two-year term.
  • Meetings are called at any given time when the need arises.
  • Rotating presidency: Members take turn at holding the presidency of the Security Council for one month.

Under the Charter, the Security Council has primary responsibility for the maintenance of international peace and security. It has 15 Members, and each Member has one vote. Under the Charter, all Member States are obligated to comply with Council decisions.

The Security Council takes the lead in determining the existence of a threat to the peace or act of aggression. It calls upon the parties to a dispute to settle it by peaceful means and recommends methods of adjustment or terms of settlement. In some cases, the Security Council can resort to imposing sanctions or even authorize the use of force to maintain or restore international peace and security.

The Security Council also recommends to the General Assembly the appointment of the Secretary-General and the admission of new Members to the United Nations. And, together with the General Assembly, it elects the judges of the International Court of Justice.
