Translation tests have become a hot topic among professional translators. Many are strictly against them and claim that their skills and expertise can be shown by giving samples or that recommendations are much better. In some situations I agree completely, especially for experienced translators with great recommendations and references. However, I do think there is also a time and place for translation tests.

Parece una idea babilónica, más aún cuando pretende que sean los propios usuarios quienes lo hagan, pero la solución fue "transformar la traducción en algo que millones de personas quieren hacer, y es aprender un nuevo lenguaje", dijo Von Ahn. "Pensamos que tal vez lo podíamos hacer con computadora pero vimos que no, que por ahora la traducción es muy mala y necesitamos humanos", señaló Von Ahn, licenciado en Ciencias Informáticas por la Universidad de Duke (Carolina del Norte) y doctor por la Universidad Carnegie Mellon en Pittsburgh (Pensilvania), donde imparte clase.

Last year, of course, Public Address readers bypassed the news and opted for a neologism -- the ungendered genital insult that is twatcock. In 2009, the list was dominated by words involving Michael Laws and an “h” and in 2008, "credit crunch" came in ahead of "rofflenui". In 2007, another coinage, "Te Qaeda" topped the poll and in 2006, the big word was "unbundled". The selection format is the same as in previous years: candidate words and phrases will be proposed and debated here. After about a week, I'll compile the candidates into a list for voting and a few days thereafter we will have a winner.
Almost since Amazon's controversial Kindle Owners' Lending Library--which allows Amazon Prime members to borrow selected ebooks for free--debuted, there have been rumors that Amazon was inviting KDP self-publishers to participate. Amazon has just unveiled KDP Select, which allows self-publishers to "Distribute books through the Kindle Owners' Lending Library and reach the growing number of US Amazon Prime members." Authors will receive not just exposure, but payment, through a special fund established by Amazon. $500,000 is available in December, and "at least" $6 million in 2012. (See Amazon's detailed FAQ.)

Les Tunisiens Abdelkader Mhiri et Hammadi Sammoud ont remporté le Prix de la traduction Ibn Khaldoun-Senghor en sciences humaines pour la traduction du français vers l’arabe du 'Nouveau dictionnaire encyclopédique des sciences du langage', a appris jeudi la PANA de source officielle. 'Le jury a relevé la rigueur et la fidélité de cette traduction du français vers l’arabe et hautement apprécié la pertinence des choix terminologiques, ainsi que l’utilité des index ajoutés par les traducteurs en fin du volume, facilitant ainsi son utilisation', a indiqué l’Organisation internationale de la Francophonie (OIF) dans un communiqué.
La 4e édition de ce Dictionnaire des techniques et technologies actuelles, entièrement revue et augmentée, comporte plus de 9 000 nouvelles entrées et propose ainsi la traduction de près de 40 000 termes. Certains ajouts reflètent l'importance croissante de domaines tels que les nanotechnologies, les armements et la guerre, l'astronomie et le cosmos , d'autres prennent en compte l'intérêt porté de nos jours à notre planète, au travers de l'agriculture, l'écologie et le souci de l'environnement, l'urbanisme et les transports, l'énergie, ses sources et sa conservation, la pollution, le traitement de l'eau et des déchets.

With the aim of elevating awareness and engendering appreciation of Spanish literature in the United States, this triennial $10,000 prize has been created by the Cultural Committee and Board of Directors of Queen Sofía Spanish Institute to honor the best English-language translation of a work of fiction written in Castilian by a Spanish author and published by an American imprint. The inaugural award, celebrating the best translation published between 2006 and 2008, was given in 2010 to Edith Grossman for her 2008 translation of Antonio Muñoz Molina’s A Manuscript of Ashes. Subsequent awards are anticipated in 2012 and 2015.

No digo que el lenguaje modístico sea superior al convencional, sino que es distinto; el lenguaje convencional es más rico y está mejor hecho, la gran literatura no se puede basar en modismos, aunque los use, la gran literatura es lenguaje convencional porque es incomparable una poesía de Góngora o de Rubén Darío que una canción de Juan Gabriel o Banda El Limón, hay diferencias cualitativas”, señala el escritor.
