A US teenager was recently reported to have developed the oddly named medical condition “popcorn lung” after vaping in secret for three years. Officially known as bronchiolitis obliterans, popcorn lung is a rare but serious and irreversible disease that damages the tiny airways in the lungs, leading to persistent coughing, wheezing, fatigue and breathlessness. The term “popcorn lung” dates back to the early 2000s when several workers at a microwave popcorn factory developed lung problems after inhaling a chemical called diacetyl – the same ingredient used to give popcorn its rich, buttery taste.

Under Decree No. 371, which takes effect on Dec. 31, individuals who allow the use of e-cigarettes or heated tobacco products at premises under their ownership or management will be fined between VND5 million and VND10 million. For organizations, the fines will be doubled.
The decree defines e-cigarettes as products consisting of an electronic device, a container holding e-cigarette liquid, and the liquid itself. Heated tobacco products are defined as those comprising an electronic device and specially processed tobacco.

New Zealand will ban disposable vapes in a radical crackdown on its own kid e-cig epidemic. Child-friendly flavours, such as 'cotton candy' and 'strawberry jelly donut', will also be forbidden in favour of duller titles. The drastic changes — set to be phased in from August — follow an unprecedented law preventing kids born after 2009 from ever being able to buy cigarettes. Existing regulations have not managed to reduce the rising rates of youth vaping in Aotearoa New Zealand. Both the latest NZ Health Survey and Snapshot Y10 survey reported high levels of daily vaping among young people aged 18 to 24 (23%) and 14 to 15 (10% overall, but more than 20% among rangatahi Māori). Young men are behind the growing popularity of nicotine pouches in Great Britain, a study suggests. Around 7.5% of 16 to 24-year-old-men are using the small sachets that fit under the top lip, compared with 1.9% use among young women and 1% among adults overall. Most pouch users - estimated to be around half a million people - also smoke or vape, and a growing number are using them to give up smoking, University College London researchers found. They say research is needed to determine whether the nicotine-filled pouches could help people quit cigarettes, which contain harmful tobacco and other chemicals.

Imperial’s response follows the call by the Office for Health Improvement and Disparities (OHID) for evidence to “identify opportunities to reduce the number of children (people aged under 18) accessing and using vape products, while ensuring they are still easily available as a quit aid for adult smokers.”
