Local parades are the “shops down the road”, the places at the end of their street or around the corner where they buy milk, send parcels, visit the chemist, drop the kids off at nursery, or meet friends for a catch up. They are far smaller in scale than large town and city centre high streets, yet they still serve a very active role in people’s day to day lives. The report, published today (Feb 9), states that deprived neighbourhood parades, in comparison to affluent parades, average: • around 25 per cent less social infrastructure amenities, such as pubs, café’s and coffee shops, gyms, leisure centres and social clubs, as well as local health, digital, and educational services, and 70 per cent more over saturated retail premises, which include off licenses, takeaways, betting shops, and vape shops.

A US teenager was recently reported to have developed the oddly named medical condition “popcorn lung” after vaping in secret for three years. Officially known as bronchiolitis obliterans, popcorn lung is a rare but serious and irreversible disease that damages the tiny airways in the lungs, leading to persistent coughing, wheezing, fatigue and breathlessness. The term “popcorn lung” dates back to the early 2000s when several workers at a microwave popcorn factory developed lung problems after inhaling a chemical called diacetyl – the same ingredient used to give popcorn its rich, buttery taste.

In the study, a group of nearly 20 participants attended two lab sessions where they smoked both a traditional cigarette and a pod-based e-cigarette. To measure the effects of the vaping and smoking, the research team measured the rate at which participants' blood vessels dilated back to their normal size. Results showed delays in that process for both electronic and traditional cigarette use. "Blood vessel constriction can have major impacts on one's health in the long term," Ben Taleb said. "Studies link a delayed reaction and dilation to future negative cardiovascular events like strokes, high blood pressure and heart attacks."

The substance is a naturally occurring plant-based alkaloid that selectively binds to nicotinic receptors in the brain. In turn, this can help alleviate nicotine cravings and reduce withdrawal symptoms, among smokers of combustible cigarettes as well as e-cigarettes (vaping). Cytisinicline has been used as a smoking cessation product for decades in some Central and Eastern European countries. It was approved by the British Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency in March 2019, though only available commercially in the United Kingdom since January 2024. Cytisinicline hasn’t yet been approved by the European Medicines Agency.

Vaping is different than smoking cigarettes, since it involves heating a liquid in a small device like a vape or e-cigarette that is then inhaled in the lungs. Smoking cigarettes, on the other hand, involves burning tobacco. So is vaping safer and less harmful than smoking tobacco? Regular tobacco cigarettes contain 7,000 chemicals, many of which are harmful and toxic to the body. Although the exact chemicals that are in vaping are not completely known at this time, most experts agree that vaping exposes you to less chemicals than are found in traditional cigarettes.

Among lifetime tobacco users, higher levels of parental education were associated with co-use of cannabis and e-cigarettes. Racial/ethnic-specific patterns of e-cigarette and cannabis co-use depends on adolescents’ prior experience with tobacco. The higher rates of use and co-use of e-cigarettes and cannabis among prior tobacco users suggest that targeted interventions are needed for this group. Identified socio-demographic groups at higher risk of co-use of e-cigarettes and cannabis need to be further studied.

India banned e-cigarettes, including heated tobacco products, in 2019. With more than 100 billion cigarettes sold annually, it is the seventh-largest cigarette market by volume, where tobacco kills more than a million people a year. The world's most valuable tobacco firm, Philip Morris, had hoped India could be a key market for its heated tobacco device, IQOS, which the company says is less harmful to health than smoking.

The move is included in the tobacco and vapes bill, which will also outlaw smoking, vaping and using heated tobacco in playgrounds and outside schools and hospitals. Smoking in cars containing children and young people up to the age of 18 has been illegal in England since 2015. The new legislation will extend that prohibition to the use of vapes and heated tobacco. “No child in a playground or hospital patient should suffer because someone else chooses to smoke,” said Wes Streeting, the health secretary. “Secondhand smoke increases the risk of heart disease and lung cancer and we want to protect children and the sick from harm.”

The efficacy of advertising can be observed in its ability to shape perceptions and influence behaviors, leading to an uptick in e-cigarette usage among both young adults and teenagers. Prominent advertisements often glorify vaping as a trendy lifestyle choice, portraying it as a safer alternative to traditional smoking. This imagery has a powerful effect on the youth, shaping their beliefs and attitudes towards nicotine consumption. The strategic placement of these ads on social media platforms, websites frequented by younger populations, and even video games has further facilitated this process. As exposure increases, so does curiosity and, gradually, the normalization of e-cigarette use.

Existing regulations have not managed to reduce the rising rates of youth vaping in Aotearoa New Zealand. Both the latest NZ Health Survey and Snapshot Y10 survey reported high levels of daily vaping among young people aged 18 to 24 (23%) and 14 to 15 (10% overall, but more than 20% among rangatahi Māori). Other studies and reports from school principals confirm we need urgent action to address youth vaping. But what measures should policymakers implement? To answer this question, we need to consider how vape marketing makes these products widely available, appealing, addictive and affordable.

Young men are behind the growing popularity of nicotine pouches in Great Britain, a study suggests. Around 7.5% of 16 to 24-year-old-men are using the small sachets that fit under the top lip, compared with 1.9% use among young women and 1% among adults overall. Most pouch users - estimated to be around half a million people - also smoke or vape, and a growing number are using them to give up smoking, University College London researchers found. They say research is needed to determine whether the nicotine-filled pouches could help people quit cigarettes, which contain harmful tobacco and other chemicals.

Compared to smoking traditional cigarettes, the harm associated with ENDS use may be underestimated due to the reduced ability to control vaping behavior, ease of ENDS access, fewer vaping area restrictions, and better taste. Currently, the available evidence suggests that ENDS may be a safer alternative to traditional tobacco products. Though most oral symptoms experienced by ENDS users are relatively mild and temporary compared to traditional cigarettes, the dangers of ENDS still exist. However, further research with longer follow-up periods is required to establish the long-term safety of ENDS.

Moves by regulators to limit the nicotine content of cigarettes would encourage people to buy full-nicotine cigarettes from illegal sources, according to a new study by researchers at Johns Hopkins University. But the availability of affordable vape products, the paper also suggests, would curb that migration to the illicit market.
