Our application form can be found here.

The eligibility of applicants depends on the following criteria:

– The applicant is a Conference Interpreting student or a recent graduate. As the level of interpreting skills is crucial, priority might be given to more advanced students who already have some simultaneous interpreting experience (gained at, for instance, mock conferences, university practice, conference simulations, workshops, etc.). However, first-year students and inexperienced graduates should not be discouraged. All applications are welcome!

– The applicant’s B language is English. Whatever their A language, their language combination has to include English as a B language. As participants will be allowed to speak their mother tongue, English as a B language is a prerequisite to provide relay interpreting. C languages are welcome, but not obligatory.

– The applicant is between 18 and 30 years old.

MEUS 2025 will be an excellent opportunity for students and recent graduates to put their interpreting skills to the test, meet their future colleagues in the interpreting profession and experience EU politics first-hand.

Norway launches Jon Fosse prize for literary translators

Norway is launching a new translation price that is one of the most highly endowed of its kind in Europe, in an attempt to boost a “partly invisible” and often poorly paid profession increasingly under threat from machine translation.

Named after the Norwegian novelist and playwright who won the 2023 Nobel prize in literature, Jon Fosse, the Fosse prize for translators will reward one author every year with 500,000 NOK (£36,000) for making “a particularly significant contribution to translating Norwegian literature into another language”.

Funded by the Norwegian government and managed by the National Library in Oslo, the prize is exclusive to those translating from Bokmål and Nynorsk, the two official written standards of the Norwegian language.

Interpreters for the Dutch Ministry of Justice are scaling back or quitting due to deteriorating working conditions, raising concerns about the availability of qualified interpreters in courtrooms, the Association of Certified Interpreters and Translators (ORRT) reported Saturday.

Italian startup Translated launches Lara, an AI-powered translation tool to rival Google Translate, GPT-4o

Rome-based Translated, a provider of AI-powered language solutions, announced Lara on Monday as its official translation AI platform for individuals, teams, and enterprises.

The announcement comes three years after raising $30M in funding led by private investment house Ardian in 2021.

As per the company’s claims, Lara outperforms popular machine translation systems compared to popular machine translation tools, including Google Translate, DeepL, and OpenAI’s GPT-4o tuned for translation.

The Italian company says Lara consistently demonstrates superior accuracy, making fewer errors than median professional translators and approaching the language singularity.

Translated thinks that soon, the top 1 per cent of professional translators will spend the same amount of time reviewing AI-generated translations as they do with those from other translators.

Remote interpreting raises concerns about communication quality in healthcare

Remote interpreting raises concerns about communication quality in healthcare | Quezil - News on Language & Technology | Scoop.it

Remote medical interpreting (RMI) may be hindering healthcare communication rather than helping it, according to a new study from the University of Surrey.

As the healthcare sector leaned heavily on technology during the COVID-19 pandemic, interpreters reported mixed experiences that raises serious questions about the effectiveness of remote communication platforms in critical medical settings.

The study, led by Surrey's Dr Wei Zhang alongside Dr Elena Davitti and Professor Sabine Braun, surveyed 47 professional interpreters with experience in remote interpreting across various healthcare contexts.

This research found that while remote interpreting technologies like telephone and video interpreting are widely adopted, they may affect the quality of communication between healthcare providers and patients. Many interpreters expressed concerns about the negative impacts these remote methods have on their performance and the overall patient experience and outcomes.

New translation project to publish Cardinal Ratzinger's collected works in English

Some two dozen works of the late Pope Benedict XVI's pre-papal writings will be made available in English, many for the first time, in a new translation project led by the academic division of Word on Fire Catholic Ministries.

Libreria Editrice Vaticana, the Vatican's publishing house, has granted Word on Fire the exclusive English-language rights to translate and publish the collected works of Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, which were written in the late pope's native German.

Word on Fire announced the news in an Oct. 24 press release, with the nonprofit's founder, Bishop Robert E. Barron of Winona-Rochester, Minnesota, describing the value of the works as "inestimable."

"They will serve future generations as a great repository not only of theological and spiritual wisdom, but of the history of a particular moment in the life of the Church," said Bishop Barron in the statement.
