Quebec to impose French-language quotas on streaming giants New legislation takes aim at services like Spotify and Netflix Quebec Culture Minister Mathieu Lacombe tabled a bill today that would force streaming giants to add French-language content and make it more easily accessible to users. Bill 109 has been in the works for over a year. It marks the first time that Quebec would set a "visibility quota" for French-language content on major streaming platforms such as Netflix, Disney and Spotify.

Urgent solutions for South Africa's court interpreter shortage The Department of Justice and Constitutional Development (DoJCD) has acknowledged the shortage of court interpreters and is working on strategic initiatives to tackle the problem. This comes after the South Africa Registered Court Translators & Interpreters (SARCTI) highlighted the significant shortage of interpreters — both in sign language and spoken languages — and sworn translators within the South African judiciary. They said the matter necessitates an urgent strategic overhaul. The issue was first brought to the public’s attention back in 2022 when the Public Service Commission (PSC) commissioner Anele Gxoyiya lamented the general lack of sign language interpreters working in the government, but did not give a complete account of the issue. The lack of court interpreters has also made headlines when cases were repeatedly delayed due to not having interpreters. The PSC was contacted to provide an update on this, but redirected inquiries to the DoJCD. Even Parliament has felt the need for more interpreting services as the issue was raised last year when MPs wanted interpretation services not only on request at the meetings of the portfolio committees.

WhatsApp begins testing in-app message translation in latest beta Meta-owned popular messaging platform, WhatsApp, is now reportedly testing a new ‘message translation’ feature in its Android beta version 2.25.12.25. As the name suggests, this feature enables users to translate chat messages and channel updates directly within the app, according to a report by WABetaInfo. It clearly aims to enhance cross-language communication while maintaining user privacy. Speaking of the working process, translations are processed locally on the user’s device, ensuring that message data is not sent to external servers. To use this feature, users must download specific language packs – supported languages currently include Spanish, Arabic, Portuguese (Brazil), Hindi, and Russian. Even an optional language pack is also available for automatic detection of the message language, which is particularly useful in multilingual group chats. Interestingly, users can activate the translation feature on a per-chat basis through the chat settings, allowing for automatic translation of incoming messages. Alternatively, individual messages can be translated manually by selecting the ‘Translate’ option.

Registration for the European Colloquium on Gender and Translation Registration is now open for the sixth edition of the European Colloquium on Gender and Translation. This international event has explored gender in translation and interpreting through an intersectional lens. Early bird registration available until April 30, 2025. Since 2016, the European Colloquium on Gender and Translation has been periodically offering an overview of the latest trends in translation and interpreting research and practice in its interaction with gender, with gatherings in Valencia, Naples, Valencia, Bergamo and Ferrara. By placing an emphasis on intersectionality, the 6th edition of this Colloquium in Barcelona proposes to overcome traditional approaches to gender as a monolithic entity, to embrace more nuanced understandings of gender as a multidimensional category that necessarily intersects with other layers of oppression and discrimination such as race, ethnicity, sexuality, (dis)ability, age, class or religion, to name a few.

Interior Ministry - Czech Republic wants to use AI translations in asylum proceedings The Interior Ministry - Czech Republic is preparing an amendment to the foreigners’ law that would allow the authorities to use AI instead of human interpreters in asylum proceedings. Interpreters have protested against the idea, warning of the uncertain quality of such tools, but refugee aid organizations welcome the change, saying that it promises greater objectivity in the procedure. Participants in the asylum procedure will have the right to refuse a machine translation, but in that case they will have to arrange for a court interpreter and cover the costs of the service. 'The Interpreter' explores the reality of children acting as 'language brokers' for their parents Bridging language gaps between families is a reality for a lot of children of immigrants in America. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, an estimated 11 million children in the U.S. act as interpreters and translators for their parents. Olivia Abtahi tackles this often-overlooked topic of kid translators in her picture book debut, "The Interpreter," out on Jan. 21. Illustrated by Monica Arnaldo, the book follows Cecilia, a young girl who serves as the interpreter for her Spanish-speaking parents. She helps them communicate at the hairdresser, the accountant's office and the grocery store, all while trying to be a regular, soccer-playing kid. Inevitably, Cecilia realizes she's struggling to juggle both her translation duties on top of her normal kid duties. German Translator Caught on Hot Mic Complaining About Trump Inauguration Speech: How Much Longer 'With This S–t?' A hot mic caught a German interpreter's moment of impatience during live coverage of Donald Trump's inauguration on Monday. As the president delivered his speech, an interpreter for German TV channel Phoenix—seemingly unaware his microphone was still on—was heard asking his colleagues, "Tell me, how long do you want to stay with this s–t?" The faux pas occurred after Trump's 30-minute inaugural address in the Capitol Rotunda, during a less formal speech to an overflow crowd in Emancipation Hall. Trump spoke for slightly longer than he had in his initial address, to what he described as a "younger, far more beautiful audience." Phoenix, known for its coverage of political events, has not yet released an official statement regarding the incident.

"Invitation to interpreting students to participate in Model EU Strasbourg 2025 as an Interpreter
Model European Union Strasbourg
(MEUS) is the largest and most realistic simulation of EU politics. It is held for a week each year since 2007 at the seat of the European Parliament in Strasbourg, a city that embodies the spirit of the European Union. The participants, young people from all over Europe and beyond, enjoy a first-hand experience of the decision-making process of the EU by taking on the roles of various policy actors: MEPs, Ministers of the Council, Interpreters, Journalists,Interest Representatives, and National banking representatives of Euro Area countries. Interpreters play a pivotal role at MEUS as they interpret speeches, debates and meetings and work between English and their mother tongue both simultaneously and consecutively. You can find more information about our project in the document attached.
MEUS 2025 will take place from April 6 to 10 in Strasbourg and applications are open now and EXTENDED until January 17, 2025.
Our application form can be found here.
The eligibility of applicants depends on the following criteria:
– The applicant is a Conference Interpreting student or a recent graduate. As the level of interpreting skills is crucial, priority might be given to more advanced students who already have some simultaneous interpreting experience (gained at, for instance, mock conferences, university practice, conference simulations, workshops, etc.). However, first-year students and inexperienced graduates should not be discouraged. All applications are welcome!
– The applicant’s B language is English. Whatever their A language, their language combination has to include English as a B language. As participants will be allowed to speak their mother tongue, English as a B language is a prerequisite to provide relay interpreting. C languages are welcome, but not obligatory.
– The applicant is between 18 and 30 years old.
MEUS 2025 will be an excellent opportunity for students and recent graduates to put their interpreting skills to the test, meet their future colleagues in the interpreting profession and experience EU politics first-hand.
For additional information on our project and the application process, we invite you to visit our website or follow us on social media (for our latest posts, please visit our Facebook and Instagram).
In case anyone has any questions, are encouraged to contact interpreters@meu-strasbourg.org."
