International Translation Day: Recognising Crucial Role of Translators And Interpreters Globally International Translation Day, celebrated annually on September 30th, serves as a global celebration dedicated to recognizing the invaluable contributions of translators and interpreters in bridging linguistic and cultural divides. The theme of ITD 2024 calls for us to protect translation as an art, protect copyright and related rights, and protect our livelihoods, thereby ensuring the future and sustainability of our profession. Languages, with their complex implications for identity, communication, social integration, education and development, are of strategic importance for people and the planet. There is growing awareness that languages play a vital role in development, in ensuring cultural diversity and intercultural dialogue, but also in attaining quality education for all and strengthening cooperation, in building inclusive knowledge societies and preserving cultural heritage, and in mobilizing political will for applying the benefits of science and technology to sustainable development.

Polisario accuses Spain of using Moroccan interpreters to block asylum claims The Polisario has accused Moroccan interpreters working on behalf of the Spanish Ministry of the Interior of failing to accurately convey testimonies of asylum seekers of Saharan origin. Spanish media and radical left political players allege that these interpreters omit mentions of «statements of torture and human rights violations committed by the Moroccan authorities». They believe this "bad" translation directly contributes to the rejection of asylum applications from individuals who identify as "Polisario activists". In parallel with the criticism of Moroccan interpreters, deputies from the far-left Sumar coalition, a component of the government presided over by Pedro Sanchez, sent a written question to the government on the subject. In their text, they denounced "the appointment by the Ministry of the Interior of a Moroccan translator who speaks a different dialect from that spoken by another Saharawi refugee".

How Big Is the Machine Translation Market in 2024? It’s a big question because it has so many far-reaching and long-lasting impacts: Just how big is the machine translation (MT) market in 2024? The answer can influence professionals considering joining the industry; tech experts thinking up their next big invention; and investors doing their due diligence and looking into ROI. Anecdotally, MT has only gained more ground in the first half of 2024, thanks in large part to the hype surrounding AI-enabled solutions that also offer translation, such as ChatGPT. The release of foundation models (i.e., those for more general use, versus specific disciplines or tasks) has piqued interest among observers in a variety of fields. As laid out in the 2024 Slator Language Industry Market Report, Slator estimated that the size of the MT market increased by 31% in 2023 to USD 1.55bn.

Most freelancers on translation and transcription platforms face poor working conditions, according to new Fairwork research These platforms are at the same time creating new income opportunities for workers from Asian and African countries, which make up the majority of the online workforce in language services. However, a new Fairwork report by researchers from the WZB Berlin Social Science Center and the University of Oxford finds that many freelancers on online translation and transcription platforms are confronted with low wages, insufficient protection from work-related risks and unfair management practices. In a new study, the Fairwork project has evaluated the working conditions of 9 of the most popular global translation and transcription platforms: Translated, TranscribeMe, Gengo, Lionbridge, Scribie, TransPerfect, GoTranscript, SmartCat and Rev. Clients of these platforms include global businesses such as AirBnB, L’Oreal, Spotify, Netflix, Google, and Facebook as well as prominent universities such as Princeton University, the University of California in Berkeley, the University of Washington, and Yale University.
Translations are expected to happen automatically within chats - By Web Desk
- July 13, 2024
WhatsApp is reportedly testing a new feature that allows users to translate messages in different languages. According to WABetaInfo, this live translation feature uses on-device processing and may incorporate Google's live translation technology. The feature has been found in the beta version 2.24.15.8 of WhatsApp for Android. To utilize this feature, users may need to download language packs, as it will initially support English and Hindi, with additional languages to be added in the future. Translations are expected to happen automatically within chats, eliminating the need to leave the app for translation. Currently, the live translation feature is still under development and is not available to beta testers, as confirmed by Gadgets 360. In addition to live translation, WhatsApp is also developing a feature for live transcription of voice messages. This will allow users to generate text transcriptions of voice messages. A banner might appear under a voice message prompting the user to transcribe it, though both features are still in development and not widely accessible yet.
