Develop indigenous languages: SADTU | The New Age Online | Quezil - News on Language & Technology | Scoop.it

African languages should be developed in schools so that they can become mediums of teaching, particularly in the foundation phase, the SA  "All schools should be provided with human resources with regards to teaching in that language," the union said in a statement.

The congress also called for teacher training colleges to prioritise training teachers of indigenous languages. The theme of the congress was "Restore the character of Sadtu as  a union of revolutionary professionals, agents of change and champions of people's education for people's power in pursuit of socialism".

"We declare that socialism is the future as it guarantees sustainable development and deconstruct[s] the exploitation of one man by another and will end poverty and misery in the world." The congress resolved that in the determination of teaching posts, the degree of complexity of curricula taught in different schools should be considered.

Delegates also agreed that teachers in the early childhood development sector should be highly qualified, with relevant competencies in health, social, psychological and educational issues. "A standardised qualification must be agreed upon in order to establish uniform standards."

All schools should have support staff, such as therapists and psychologists, to help teachers deal with pupils who had difficulties with mainstream learning.  The congress called for the Annual National Assessment (ANA) not  to be "abused to label teachers and schools, thereby demoralising and de-professionalising them".

ANAs are tests to determine pupils' levels of competency in literacy and numeracy. Feedback from the ANAs should be given to schools promptly, before the results were publicised, and should be followed up with meaningful intervention programmes. "At a broader level, delegates note the recent attacks on Chapter 9 institutions of democracy from those meant to lead them.

"We are an organisation that fought many other injustices in our  past and including the present and we have a moral obligation to protect these institutions even if it is against those that lead them," Sadtu said. Last month the union called on Public Protector Thuli Madonsela to stop using her office to "attack the ANC".

This was after a letter Madonsela reportedly wrote to Zuma, about the R246 million spent on upgrades at his private Nkandla homestead in KwaZulu-Natal, was leaked to the media. ANC secretary general Gwede Mantashe has publicly criticised Madonsela and said she was on a crusade to discredit the party.

At the time Sadtu's national executive said in a statement: "The actions of advocate Thuli Madonsela are clear systematic signs planned to create anarchy and divisions within our society and the ANC in particular".

FIT Webinar: The Translation Industry By Numbers: Between Growth, Transformation, and Reinvention

Speaker: Gabriel Karandyšovský

Date:: Friday, May 10th, 2024

Numbers don’t lie: The language industry continues growing, and the demand for language services is at an all-time high. And yet, we find ourselves in a peculiar moment of the industry’s growth trajectory, with professionals and companies wondering how their future will look, with AI especially being seen as the great disruptor coming for our jobs.

Perhaps surprisingly, localization managers on the client-side report that AI is driving renewed interest in languages from their companies. Is there hope that AI is not on the hunt for our jobs after all? AI will continue to shape our industry, so how do we reinvent the rules of the game to enable us to continue growing personally and professionally? In this one-hour session, we’ll talk about the global state of the industry in 2023/2024, the transformation we’re undergoing. We will also shed light on what is the reality of those first in line tasked with bringing AI in localization to life — the localization teams — and discuss prospects for future reinvention, in a world where human and machine thrive alongside each other.

Corpora in Interpreting Studies: East Asian Perspectives - 1st Edition

Corpora in Interpreting Studies: East Asian Perspectives - 1st Edition | Quezil - News on Language & Technology | Scoop.it

Cheung, Liu, Moratto, and their contributors examine how corpora can be effectively harnessed to benefit interpreting practice and research in East Asian settings.

In comparison to the achievements made in the field of corpus- based translation studies, the use of corpora in interpreting is not comparable in terms of scope, methods, and agenda. One of the predicaments that hampers this line of inquiry is the lack of systematic corpora to document spoken language. This issue is even more pronounced when dealing with East Asian languages such as Chinese, Japanese, and Korean, which are typologically different from European languages. As language plays a pivotal role in interpreting research, the use of corpora in interpreting within East Asian contexts has its own distinct characteristics as well as methodological constraints and concerns. However, it also generates new insights and findings that can significantly advance this research field.

A valuable resource for scholars of scholars focusing on corpus interpreting, particularly those dealing with East Asian languages.

What every translator and interpreter should know about AI

What every translator and interpreter should know about AI | Quezil - News on Language & Technology | Scoop.it
The first of two introductory webinars presented by The University of Surrey, Centre for Translation Studies, aimed at tackling the issues surrounding AI and its impact on the language industry.

Navigating the constant influx of news about AI and its impact on the language industry can be overwhelming. Faced with contrasting perspectives on the benefits of AI and concerns about staying relevant in a world where AI appears to take centre-stage, language professionals need to address two pressing questions:

  • Can AI-driven tools help enhance your capabilities and strengthen your role as a language professional in today’s market?
  • What are the most compelling arguments you can present to your clients about AI, to underscore the fundamental role that translators and interpreters continue to play in the era of AI?

This first webinar will explore essential terms and concepts in the AI domain, from deep learning to neural machine translation and large language models. The session seeks to establish common ground, enabling translators and interpreters to navigate discussions about the capabilities of AI effectively, alongside an initial exploration of risks associated with using AI.

Deaf patients face limited interpreting services in Connecticut' hospitals, health outcomes suffer

Deaf patients face limited interpreting services in Connecticut' hospitals, health outcomes suffer | Quezil - News on Language & Technology | Scoop.it

John Silva was suddenly taken to Hartford Hospital following a brief stroke-like attack last year. He is deaf and has relied on the hospital’s American Sign Language interpreting service for over 40 years.

John and his wife Kim, who is hard of hearing, expected to have access to in-person interpreters. However, no in-person sign language interpreters were available when they arrived. Medical staff could also not find the video remote interpreting (VRI) system, typically on an iPad or computer.

Kim Silva said the staff eventually located a VRI system, but only had access to it for an hour since other patients also needed it. John Silva was left to wait six hours for an interpreter to arrive. An in-person interpreter eventually arrived to care for another patient but was able to stay with John and Kim for an hour.

Ultimately, John needed to undergo a series of examinations and scans with lip-read instructions and relied on a speech-to-text transcriber he provided during the discharge process.

The Silvas, of Hartford, are just one of hundreds of deaf, hard of hearing and deafblind Connecticut residents experiencing issues accessing sign language interpreting services at medical centers across the state, resulting in worsened health outcomes for the community.

“Something’s wrong with the system,” John Silva signed.

How AI Allows You To Transcribe Audios

How AI Allows You To Transcribe Audios | Quezil - News on Language & Technology | Scoop.it

Whisper is a technology based on artificial intelligence to transcribe audios. It consists of uploading an audio file to your system, which analyzes and transcribes all the words spoken in the audio, making your transcription easier.

Whisper, in its current version, is an automatic speech recognition (ASR) system, using AI to process audio and convert its content into text. This version was trained with more than one million hours of audio, surpassing the 680,000 hours of its previous version and reducing errors by 10 to 20 percent.

OpenAI recommends it as a more reliable tool for transcriptions. Although it has occasional errors, it is more efficient than most, being fast, effective and free to use.

TREXTUALITY – Interdisciplinary Approaches to Translated and Multilingual Texts | University of Turku

TREXTUALITY – Interdisciplinary Approaches to Translated and Multilingual Texts | University of Turku | Quezil - News on Language & Technology | Scoop.it

Conference announcement:

Theme: TREXTUALITY – Interdisciplinary Approaches to Translated and Multilingual Texts

Dates: 7–9 September 2023

Venue: Arcanum, University of Turku

Schematically, translation studies acknowledges that a text can be translated from one language into another but tends to see source and target texts as stable entities, while in textual scholarship, texts are understood to take many forms, but the different textual manifestations are usually studied only within one language.

In recent years, however, we have seen interdisciplinary approaches that go beyond the source text–target text pair in the case of translation studies and cross linguistic borders when it comes to textual scholarship. For example, thematic journal issues have explored multilingualism and translation from the point of view of textual scholarship (Dillen, Macé, and van Hulle eds. 2012), combined genetic criticism with translation (Durand-Bogaert ed. 2014), and laid out the foundations for genetic translation studies (Cordingley and Montini eds. 2015). Translation can also be seen as a means for bringing out different interpretations of a text and as an intertwined part of writing (Reynolds ed. 2019). Similarly, studies on closely related themes, such as multilingual writing, self-translation, collaborative translation, retranslation, indirect translation, pseudotranslation, backtranslation, and adaptation, may equally provide insights into the complex geneses and networks of dependence that lie behind texts that have manifestations in several languages (Gambier 1994; Bistué 2013). Studies on these kinds of themes often draw on archival resources, as archival material can provide information on translating, translations, and translators (Kujamäki 2018; Cordingley and Hersant eds. 2021).

Keynote speakers:
• Guyda Armstrong, University of Manchester: ”Travelling things: materializing translation in premodern objects"
• Outi Paloposki, University of Turku: ”Drafts, letters, letter drafts – adventures in translation archives”
• Dirk Weissmann, University of Toulouse-Jean Jaurès: ”Behind the surface of the monolingual text: multilingual writers, textual genetics and the monolingual paradigm”
