I’m Not Your Guy, Dude: Why Language Really Does Matter

I’m Not Your Guy, Dude: Why Language Really Does Matter  | Linguistics & Language Neurology | Scoop.it

“I’m not a guy,” the instructor said. She was answering a student presenter who called the class “you guys.”*  He paused and blinked. But “you guys” came tumbling out moments later.

“I. Am. Not. A. Guy.” she said again, unruffled. For the next few moments he grew redder, repeating his mistake and hearing the same composed correction. Finally he finished, seemingly unable to absorb the idea that men + women ≠ guys.

The student was mimicking a familiar irritant: imagining that “male” words are gender neutral. This path is so worn that even feminists follow along. But consider this: female words do not enjoy the same privilege. Calling a mixed-sex group “You gals” would be extraordinary. A She might be a “Hey man.” But a He is not “Hey woman.”

When the gate swings only one way, toward obfuscating or negating women, it’s worth another look."

Natural Language Processing

Natural Language Processing | Linguistics & Language Neurology | Scoop.it

Dan Jurafsky, Christopher Manning

Stanford University

Start: : To Be Announced (8 weeks)
Workload: 8-10 hours/week
Computer Science: Artificial Intelligence, Robotics, Vision

In this class, you will learn fundamental algorithms and mathematical models for processing natural language, and how these can be used to solve practical problems.

This course covers a broad range of topics in natural language processing, including word and sentence tokenization, text classification and sentiment analysis, spelling correction, information extraction, parsing, meaning extraction, and question answering, We will also introduce the underlying theory from probability, statistics, and machine learning that are crucial for the field, and cover fundamental algorithms like n-gram language modeling, naive bayes and maxent classifiers, sequence models like Hidden Markov Models, probabilistic dependency and constituent parsing, and vector-space models of meaning.

We are offering this course on Natural Language Processing free and online to students worldwide, continuing Stanford's exciting forays into large scale online instruction. Students have access to screencast lecture videos, are given quiz questions, assignments and exams, receive regular feedback on progress, and can participate in a discussion forum. Those who successfully complete the course will receive a statement of accomplishment. Taught by Professors Jurafsky and Manning, the curriculum draws from Stanford's courses in Natural Language Processing. You will need a decent internet connection for accessing course materials, but should be able to watch the videos on your smartphone.

According to Glossika CEO Michael Campbell, machine learning algorithms mean there’s “no need for language experts to figure out what to teach in what order – our AI figures out the complexity and sorting of any language automatically.”
The platform, which works in-browser on computer or mobile, features customizable lessons that take around 10 to 20 minutes. Users are advised to get a full night’s rest between lessons — there’s no powering through a week’s worth of material to ‘level up’ or anything like that.

"When I was invited to give a talk at Aquinas College on singular 'they,' I barely finished reading the invitation before saying yes. It never crossed my mind that a lecture on this kind of grammar topic might seem like a recipe for the pedantic or dull, until friends teased me about it later. (As Lingua Franca readers can imagine, given my multiple posts on the topic, I have at least an hour’s worth of thoughts on this pronoun and what is at stake in using it — or prohibiting its use.)."

Languages: Why we must save dying tongues

Languages: Why we must save dying tongues | Linguistics & Language Neurology | Scoop.it
Hundreds of our languages are teetering on the brink of extinction, and as Rachel Nuwer discovers, we may lose more than just words if we allow them to die out
Dani Rivera's curator insight, November 2, 2017 10:46 AM
Languages convey identity and culture, if a language is lost, one part of our humanity essence is lost, since what makes us different from other species is the idea that we have rationale components and we are able to communicate with the languages. The articles expresses that in north america and europe many languages are not being learnt anymore, but this is not far from the Colombian context where more than 61 indigenous tribes exist and not even the third part of the population is still apprehending the language ,not even the same inhabitants of those cultures. Is the duty of us language teachers to deal with these endangered languages and cultures
Sara Astros Rojas's curator insight, November 9, 2017 9:26 AM
Language is part of the culture of a country and also play a major role in the identity of a group of people. Language is part of the history and the evolution of human kind and it changes among the people who speaks that language. The fact that people stop talking those language involves losing part of the identity of  country or a community.
