The Language Hoax: John H. McWhorter - Oxford University Press

This short, opinionated book addresses the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis, which argues that the language we speak shapes the way we perceive the world. Linguist John McWhorter argues that while this idea is mesmerizing, it is plainly wrong. It is language that reflects culture and worldview, not the other way around. The fact that a language has only one word for eat, drink, and smoke doesn't mean its speakers don't process the difference between food and beverage, and those who use the same word for blue and green perceive those two colors just as vividly as others do.

Penfield - Suite Evocative

Penfield - Suite Evocative | Linguistics & Language Neurology | Scoop.it

Fortunately modern composers are still composing for the harmonium. Here the composer Craig Penfield performs his own Suite for Harmonium (or Chamber Organ) on an 1871 Trayser Harmonium made in Germany. This is a work of 3 contrasting movements of moods. Following the "Preface" the work goes directly into the first movement depicting a windy night. Movement two follows with its Sad Lullaby and movement three concludes this composition with a flashy Etude of Triumph......

We speak as we feel, we feel as we speak

We speak as we feel, we feel as we speak | Linguistics & Language Neurology | Scoop.it
Ground-breaking experiments have been conduced to uncover the links between language and emotions. Researchers were able to demonstrate that the articulation of vowels systematically influences our feelings and vice versa. The authors concluded that it would seem that language users learn that the articulation of 'i' sounds is associated with positive feelings and thus make use of corresponding words to describe positive circumstances. The opposite applies to the use of 'o' sounds.
