A record-high number of people across six countries are either already starving or on the brink of disaster, a new report warns today. The latest Hunger Hotspots reveals that an all-time high of 970,000 people are facing catastrophic levels of hunger in Afghanistan, Ethiopia, South Sudan, Somalia, and Yemen – ten times more than five years ago. Alongside Nigeria, where violence has been intensifying and hampering access to people going hungry, these are the countries of highest concern. The report, produced by the World Food Programme (WFP) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), calls for urgent humanitarian action for 19 hunger hotspots in total, to prevent huge loss of life between October 2022 and January 2023. It lays out country-specific recommendations for action – short-term protective measures in advance of new humanitarian needs materializing, and emergency response to address the current situation.

The FAO Food Price Index* (FFPI) averaged 136.3 points in September 2022, down 1.5 points (1.1 percent) from August, marking the sixth monthly decline in a row. The FFPI's decline in September was driven by a sharp fall in the international prices of vegetable oils and moderate decreases in those of sugar, meat and dairy products, more than offsetting a rebound in the cereal price sub-index. Despite the new decline, the FFPI remained 7.2 points (5.5 percent) above its value in the corresponding month last year. » The FAO Cereal Price Index averaged 147.8 points in September, up 2.2 points (1.5 percent) from August and 14.9 points (11.2 percent) above its September 2021 value. In September, international wheat prices rebounded by 2.2 percent, underpinned by heightened uncertainty about the Black Sea Grain Initiative's continuation beyond

This Data in Emergencies Monitoring (DIEM-Monitoring) brief shares the results of a third-round field assessment conducted between July and August 2022 in Lebanon. It presents key findings and recommendations for humanitarian actors to utilize in planning and implementing data-driven programming to sustain farmers’ livelihoods and build their resilience to future shocks – protecting the food security of rural people in Lebanon. The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations established the DIEM-Monitoring System to collect, analyse and disseminate data on shocks and livelihoods in countries prone to multiple shocks. DIEM-Monitoring aims to inform decision-making by providing regularly updated information on how different shocks are affecting the livelihoods and food security of agricultural populations. Information is collected from primary sources in the production process: producers, traders or marketers, input suppliers, extension officers and other key informants.

The OECD-FAO Agricultural Outlook 2022-2031 provides a consensus assessment of the ten-year prospects for agricultural commodity and fish markets at national, regional, and global levels, and serves as a reference for forward-looking policy analysis and planning. Projections suggest that, following a business-as-usual path, SDG 2 on Zero Hunger would not be achieved by 2030 and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from agriculture would continue to increase. To achieve the Zero Hunger target while reducing direct GHG by 6%, overall agricultural productivity would need to increase by 28% over the next decade ...
