Increasing the proportion of locally produced plant protein in currently meat-rich diets could substantially reduce greenhouse gas emissions and loss of biodiversity1. However, plant protein production is hampered by the lack of a cool-season legume equivalent to soybean in agronomic value2. Faba bean (Vicia faba L.) has a high yield potential and is well suited for cultivation in temperate regions, but genomic resources are scarce. Here, we report a high-quality chromosome-scale assembly of the faba bean genome and show that it has expanded to a massive 13 Gb in size through an imbalance between the rates of ...

The main Spanish farmers' association says drought now affects 60% of the Spanish countryside and is causing “irreversible losses” to more than 3.5 million hectares of crops. the Coordinator of Farmers' and Ranchers' Organizations said in a report issued on Thursday that wheat and barley are expected to fail or be badly affected in major growing regions. Olives and nuts also are suffering due to Spain’s long-term drought, which is affecting farmers' ability to irrigate corn, sunflowers, rice and cotton, too. Reservoirs in Andalusia, Spain’s most important food-exporting region, have water levels at 30% of capacity. The regional capital, Seville, may face drinking water restrictions by the summer if not enough rain falls.

Agriculture is facing several very important challenges. Population growth means that more food must be produced to meet nutritional needs. However, this is putting excessive pressure on natural resources, such as water and land, which are heavily used for agricultural practices. For these reasons, we carried out a systematic review of existing studies in the scientific literature to better understand how innovative strategies can decrease water consumption in agriculture. It was performed following PRISMA guidelines, using the Scopus database to select papers that have investigated the link between water consumption and the main agriculture strategies, such as controlled-environment agriculture, hydroponics, and precision farming for field crops, in the last ten years. Data relating to ...

The number of people battling acute hunger and suffering from malnutrition is the highest in the last seven years. The number of people battling acute hunger and suffering from malnutrition is alarming, highest in the last seven years. The global economic shocks set in motion by the COVID-19 pandemic and Russia’s war against Ukraine, together with weather extremes and armed conflicts in some countries, are driving millions of people into acute food insecurity and malnutrition. In 2022, around 258 million people across 58 countries faced high levels of acute food insecurity requiring urgent assistance, according to the freshly published Global Report on Food Crises 2023. The figure is the highest since the first Global Report was published in 2016. A 22.7% share of the analysed population was affected, which is also the highest since the report was first published. The report is compiled by the Global Network against Food Crises, an alliance of humanitarian and development actors working to help tackle food crises.
