RactAmp - RactiveJS components with AmpersandJS models

RactAmp - RactiveJS components with AmpersandJS models | JavaScript for Line of Business Applications | Scoop.it

As a performant view layer Ractive lets you decide how and by using which of the available "frameworks" you're gonna control backend logic. And as a "non-frameworky framework" AmpersandJS is an ideal choice to utilize only certain parts of a (probably) much bigger machinery to solve discrete problems.

React To The Future With Isomorphic Apps

React To The Future With Isomorphic Apps | JavaScript for Line of Business Applications | Scoop.it
Find out why isomorphic apps might just give us the best of both worlds: using JavaScript in both places, and delivering to the user a good experience by sending down something they can see quickly and then building on that with client-side JavaScript.

Authenticate a Node.js API with JSON Web Tokens

Authenticate a Node.js API with JSON Web Tokens | JavaScript for Line of Business Applications | Scoop.it

Authentication is one of the big parts of every application. Security is always something that is changing and evolving.

We’ll build a quick API using Node and Express and we’ll be using POSTman to test it.

The main workflow of this is that we will:

  1. Have unprotected and protected routes
  2. A user will authenticate by passing in a name and a password and get back a token
  3. The user will store this token on their client-side and send it for every request
  4. We will validate this token, and if all is good, pass back information in JSON format

Mixins for JavaScript Classes

Mixins for JavaScript Classes | JavaScript for Line of Business Applications | Scoop.it

The same code in several places is the pain. Today I will say a few words about repeated parts of classes. Coders had invented a solution of this problem a long time ago: you can move similar methods and properties to a common parent class or, if you don’t have one, you can use mixins. There are many implementations of this pattern in JavaScript, but I want to review the case when a mixin is placed to the prototype chain.

Aspect Oriented Programming in JavaScript

Aspect Oriented Programming in JavaScript | JavaScript for Line of Business Applications | Scoop.it

As discussed above JavaScript supports both OOP and FP. It also turns out that it is very easy to add support for AOP to JavaScript by writing a simple library. JavaScript allows to easily redefine methods, add properties to objects during execution time, and also functions are objects in JavaScript. As a result a full-fledged Aspect Oriented Framework in JavaScript is only about 150 lines long as you will shortly see.

Our library will support the following:

  • Aspect – just functions, as almost everything in JavaScript is a function
  • Advice – “before” before method, “after” after method, “afterThrowing” when an exception is thrown, “afterReturning” just before returning a value from a function, “around” at the moment of function execution
  • Pointcut – “methods” all the methods of an object, “prototypeMethods” all the methods defined on the prototype of an object, “method” only a single method of an object

Testing React apps with Protractor

Testing React apps with Protractor | JavaScript for Line of Business Applications | Scoop.it

If you’ve ever used AngularJS, you’ll know that it has a pretty cool built-in testing setup - Karma for unit testing, and Protractor for end-to-end testing. I love Protractor, but recently ran into issues when trying to use it for a non-Angular project. Here’s how to get it working.

If you’ve not encountered end-to-end testing before, you’re in for a treat. Unlike unit testing, which is designed to validate very small components, an end-to-end test can be used to simulate how a user will actually interact with your website. We can make it go to a page, click a link, check the right page gets loaded, give it some input, check it displays the correct output - whatever you want, really. Used in conjunction with other forms of testing, it gives us a really useful look at how our site’s working, and is great for helping us catch any sneaky regressions.

Easing the Transition to ES6

Easing the Transition to ES6 | JavaScript for Line of Business Applications | Scoop.it

We crafted this post to share our approach to making ES6 support as transparent as possible for our users and our team in three easy steps.

To take advantage of ES6 features in browsers that don't natively support it, we needed to use a transpiler such as Babel (formerly known as 6to5). Babel alone has many features, however for further feature support, we also used the Babel polyfill, which allows support for features such as for..of loops, promises, and symbols.

This means our code is forward-compatible (when most modern browsers support ES6 natively, we'll be able to drop the transpiler). Another great reason for doing this is that it won't break existing code. The transpiler won't change much existing code (in the case of supporting iterators, it needs to change loops). Rather, it will pass most of it through, un-touched. This means that you can keep your existing code and begin writing ES6 right along-side it. Our workflow now involves writing ES6 syntax and upgrading pieces of older code we come across.

In order to support this, we needed automatic/transparent transpiling in three environments:

  • ES6 in development mode
  • ES6 in unit tests
  • ES6 in production

Adding authentication to your React Flux app

Adding authentication to your React Flux app | JavaScript for Line of Business Applications | Scoop.it

However, once you start creating a bigger app, you realize that just using React isn’t enough. So you start looking at Flux, which is the architecture Facebook uses to create React apps.

As we learned in a previous blog post, learning how to conduct authentication in a Single Page App can get super complex. We had to learn about tokens, JWTs and how to integrate them with SPAs. Learning how to do it with Flux is even harder! That’s why in this blogpost we’ll learn how to add authentication to a React Flux app.

Web Components and Friends: React.js, Angular.js, Polymer

Web Components and Friends: React.js, Angular.js, Polymer | JavaScript for Line of Business Applications | Scoop.it

So we will try to stay focused on one particular topic: componentization and discuss some of the philosophy and ideas that various frameworks and libraries exhibit in this particular area, but which are unfortunately still quite often lost behind the intricate technical details of the APIs they expose or are not emphasized enough and underutilized by developers. For example, I saw at least a few Angular projects that did not reuse as much code as they could have just because for some reason they avoided using custom directives (a bit later we will discuss how those relate to Web Components). After reading this article hopefully you will have a better grasp of the subject and also understand that despite superficial differences between APIs some common principles behind are still quite similar.

Functional UI and Components as Higher Order Functions

Functional UI and Components as Higher Order Functions | JavaScript for Line of Business Applications | Scoop.it

Making web applications got harder as the systems got more and more complex, and a lot of this has to do with state. We should be able to reason about a application in a simpler way, and building complex systems by combining small pieces of components which is more focused and doesn't require us to know what is happening in other parts for the system - as with HTML.

The design and implementation of the Meteor platform

Meteor is an open source JavaScript platform for building modern web and mobile apps. We designed it around two key principles: isomorphic APIs that work the same everywhere – in the cloud, on the device, and inside the browser; and full-stack reactivity, including realtime database drivers, live-updating HTML templates, and an elegant scheme for hiding network latency. Put together, these ideas dramatically improve developer productivity. I'll show you how it all works, and just as importantly, how we got to this design.

A Visual Guide to CSS3 Flexbox Properties

A Visual Guide to CSS3 Flexbox Properties | JavaScript for Line of Business Applications | Scoop.it

The Flexbox Layout officially called CSS Flexible Box Layout Module is new layout module in CSS3 made to improve the items align, directions and order in the container even when they are with dynamic or even unknown size. The prime characteristic of the flex container is the ability to modify the width or height of its children to fill the available space in the best possible way on different screen sizes.

Many designers and developers find this flexbox layout easier to use, as positioning of the elements is simpler thus more complex layouts can be achieved with less code, leading to simpler development process. Flexbox layout algorithm is direction based unlike the block or inline layout which are vertically and horizontally based. This flexbox layout should be used for small application components, while new CSS Grid Layout Module is emerging to handle the large scale layouts.

Rather that explaining how the flex properties work, this guide will focus on how the flex properties affect the layout in a visual way.
