Never In Doubt: The Breeze Server: "Have it your way"

Never In Doubt: The Breeze Server: "Have it your way" | JavaScript for Line of Business Applications | Scoop.it

BreezeJS is a 100% JavaScript client library. It can work with any backend that speaks HTTP.

It's hard to get that message across when most Breeze samples demonstrate a Breeze client talking to a Web API controller with Entity Framework and SQL server behind it. Understandably, some people believe that Breeze only works with Web API, EF, and a SQL database. We need more samples to show alternatives. We're working on those.

I'd like to clear up some misconceptions about BreezeJS regarding the relationship between data on the client and data on the server. Want the gist? Head straight to the Summary at the end.

Determining Whether Client-side MVC is for You

Determining Whether Client-side MVC is for You | JavaScript for Line of Business Applications | Scoop.it

I’ve been meaning to write down my thoughts on Javascript MVC frameworks for a while now. Ever since we rebuilt the Square merchant website with Ember[1], we’ve added major new sections to the webapp and gotten a better understanding of how an MVC app would be built and maintained with multiple engineers across multiple teams.

Currently, my thinking is that while rich Javascript MVC frameworks aren’t necessarily a silver bullet, they’re still excellent for a lot of use cases and the downsides shouldn’t preempt new projects from trying them out.

Die Grundlagen von JavaScript von Dmitry A. Soshnikov (Deutsche Übersetzung)

Die Grundlagen von JavaScript von Dmitry A. Soshnikov (Deutsche Übersetzung) | JavaScript for Line of Business Applications | Scoop.it

Test driving an event driven design

Now with javascript we are back to the old techniques. There have been very few changes in software architecture and patterns in the last 20 years. We could have been writing web applications in the browser the way we do today, more than 10 years ago, if the big companies had agreed on standards and all that. It's always about people, not about software

Anyway, for those friends of mine that are already practicing TDD but haven't really used events, it is not clear how to test drive a collaboration between objects, using events.
Let's see the simplest way to publish and subscribe to an event using javascript:

Contracts: The Practical Side of Semantics

We all recognize that we should be writing semantic code. Maybe, you’re even using or correctly, and feel pretty good about yourself. But, are you also considering the implied contract that exists when you code?

Twitter Engineering: Introducing Flight: a web application framework

Twitter Engineering: Introducing Flight: a web application framework | JavaScript for Line of Business Applications | Scoop.it

Flight is distinct from existing frameworks in that it doesn't prescribe or provide any particular approach to rendering or providing data to a web application. It's agnostic on how requests are routed, which templating language you use, or even if you render your HTML on the client or the server. While some web frameworks encourage developers to arrange their code around a prescribed model layer, Flight is organized around the existing DOM model with functionality mapped directly to DOM nodes.

Not only does this obviate the need for additional data structures that will inevitably influence the broader architecture, but by mapping our functionality directly onto the native web we get to take advantage of native features. For example, we get custom event propagation for free by piggybacking off DOM event bubbling, and our event handling infrastructure works equally well with both native and custom events.

How do I "think in AngularJS" if I have a jQuery background?

This is now officially my longest Stack Overflow answer. In fact, this answer was so long I had to fill out a Captcha. But as I've always said: anyone who says something in five words when she could have used ten is just lazy.

Hopefully you found this answer helpful just the same:

1. Don't Design, Then Mark Up!

2. Don't Augment jQuery with AngularJS!

3. Always Think in Terms of Architecture!

4. Test-Driven Development

5. The best for last: Directives Are Not Packaged jQuery!

Jan Hesse's insight:

Very enlightening and worth a read even if you've already taken the first steps in AngularJS.
