Extract CSV data from PDF files with Tabula

Extract CSV data from PDF files with Tabula | Capstone: An ESRM Coda | Scoop.it
Tabula, by Manuel Aristarán, is a useful piece of free software to get the data tables out of PDF files.
PIRatE Lab's insight:

This works via a browser interface.  It's not the fastest software in the world, but it really is simple to use and is way better than manual entry. You just load a PDF file into Tabula, which runs on your computer, highlight the table to extract, and the program does the rest. Save as a CSV and do what you want with it.

Download Tabula here. Find out a little more about it on Source.

Use the “Vanishing Spell” in PowerPoint

Use the “Vanishing Spell” in PowerPoint | Capstone: An ESRM Coda | Scoop.it

...Speaking of the spell, do you remember the scene when Harry wished he knew a good Vanishing Spell to escape his fan Colin’s photograph-clicking spree? Or the time when Bill Weasley used this incantation to make a stack of scrolls disappear while cleaning up after a meeting of the Order of the Phoenix during Harry's first night at number twelve, Grimmauld Place?

#Power tricks

Dr. Pamela Rutledge's curator insight, March 12, 2014 12:18 PM

A cautionary note on special effects in PowerPoint: special effects, including music and videos, in a PowerPoint presentation can add energy BUT if not used well, they can be distracting, or worse, appear unprofessional and immature.  When my daughters first started using PPT in middle school, their reports were full of figures dashing in with screeching sounds and words appearing with flashing lights and drum rolls.  I have seen far too many 'grown-ups' add those and a myriad of other special effects as if they were the cure to death by PPT.  (They aren't.)  You may have heard the term 'font abuse' that comes from having so many choices and results in a sense of exploration and new found font freedom that drives restraint out the window.  Don't fall prey to 'special effect abuse' in your enthusiasm.  Some good rules to follow: 1) Draft your ENTIRE presentation before you even put it in PPT. 2) Use special effects ONLY when they reinforce your message, make your idea more understandable or facilitate the flow of the presentation. Remember that a presentation is for your audience, not to entertain yourself or demonstrate your special effects prowess.

What a disappointing joke: the wholesale conversion of tropical forest to agriculture is continuing unabated.  The recent declines in deforestation rate are occurring as so much has already been lost.  To allow the relatively successful moratorium to wane will only foster greater destruction with all the familiar victims and impacts.

Gust MEES's curator insight, February 11, 2015 11:13 AM

Lucidchart is an easy tool to use to create flowcharts, mindmaps, and graphic organizers. Lucidchart offers a simple drag and drop interface for creating flow charts, organizational charts, mind maps, and other types of diagrams. To create with Lucidchart just select elements from the menus and drag them to the canvas. You can re-size any element and type text within elements on your chart. Arrows and connecting lines can be re-sized, repositioned, and labeled to bring clarity to your diagrams.

63 Things Every Student Should Know In A Digital World - TeachThought

63 Things Every Student Should Know In A Digital World - TeachThought | Capstone: An ESRM Coda | Scoop.it

"But in an increasingly connected and digital world, the things a student needs to know are indeed changing—fundamental human needs sometimes drastically redressed for an alien modern world. Just as salt allowed for the keeping of meats, the advent of antibiotics made deadly viruses and diseases simply inconvenient, and electricity completely altered when and where we slept and work and played, technology is again changing the kind of “stuff” a student needs to know."

Hello. Today we will be talking about sexual reproduction and genetics. Sexual reproduction is how something is made or carried on in life, which is also part of genetics. Genetics is what your genes and trait are made up of. For example, you and I are made from our mother and father, but we all have different genes.
