The two biggest future trends in Education

The two biggest future trends in Education | Edumorfosis.it | Scoop.it

Our world is changing fast. The pace of change, particularly when it comes to new technologies, means the half-life of skills is shrinking fast. The days of a “job for life” are gone forever.

The education sector must adapt in line with this shift and reflect the fact that the essential, in-demand skills of the future will be very different from what has been taught in the past. In other words, what we teach has to change. Furthermore, how we teach must also change to reflect the rapid digitization that is taking place across all industries, not just education.

Humanidad y Humanidades en el universo digital

Humanidad y Humanidades en el universo digital | Edumorfosis.it | Scoop.it

Learning can never be stopped; it is a lifelong process. Many passionate individuals prefer to continue their studies alongside a career. This requires flexible schedules and proper time management. Online learning can be a suitable option for them to fulfill their goals. The classroom environment facilitates an active interaction among educators and learners. The students have to follow the rules associated with an institute.

Over the past few years, the pandemic has affected the entire world. It has brought tremendous changes in various sectors, especially the education sector. While classroom learning allows for a face-to-face connection, online learning also has its own benefits.

The Digital Transformation of Higher Education Teaching: Four pedagogical prescriptions to move Active Learning Pedagogy forward

The Digital Transformation of Higher Education Teaching: Four pedagogical prescriptions to move Active Learning Pedagogy forward | Edumorfosis.it | Scoop.it

Digital learning technologies are expected to reform higher education: The recent Digital Education Action Plan (2021–2027) of the European Commission (EC) states that digital education should facilitate more personalized, flexible, and student-centred teaching (European Commission, 2021).

This places great demands on university teachers, whose technological skills have long been considered the most formidable barrier to the digital transformation of higher education (Børte et al., 2020). Meanwhile, the COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in a steep technological learning curve among higher education teachers. Overnight, university teachers were forced to adapt their teaching to a digital, online format to meet the needs of more than 1.5 billion students across the globe who have been affected by COVID-19 restrictions (UNESCO, 2021). Despite a great willingness to change, over a year into the pandemic, the frustration among (university) teachers has become apparent.

A United Kingdom survey found that higher education teachers thought that their pedagogical practis had been “reduced to the fulfilment of rudimentary technical functions” and that they played more of a transmissionist pedagogical role (Watermeyer et al., 2020). Taking the perspective of the students, recent survey data from Norwegian higher education shows that, during the pandemic, lack of motivation and sense of loneliness have been an increasing problem among students (NOKUT the Norwegian Agency for Quality Assurance in Education, 2020). From this we learn that a fully digital approach in higher education has limitations both when it comes to pedagogical practices and students’ well-being.

Top 5 EdTech trends to watch for in 2022

Top 5 EdTech trends to watch for in 2022 | Edumorfosis.it | Scoop.it

Online Education witnessed an exponential growth in 2020 and 2021. From anganwadis to advanced research centres, institutions at every level started exploring the possibilities of digital technologies for uninterrupted education.

Online education also helped these institutions to reach out to a large population with considerably less effort. The online mode of education has gained trust and popularity, and hybrid learning is now being practized in regular classroom mode.

The disruption caused by the pandemic in the last two years has immensely contributed to the expansion of education technology. The edtech (education technology) market in India was $2.8 billion by end of 2020 and is forecasted to grow 3.7 times to $10.4 billion by 2025.

6 EdTech tools to try in 2022

6 EdTech tools to try in 2022 | Edumorfosis.it | Scoop.it

Every year it takes a massive amount of time to update the guide—about three full months—because not only do I add new tools, but I also update all the stuff that changes: tools and websites change their names, they get absorbed by other companies, they shift their focus to something different, and sometimes they completely disappear. I look for the most updated videos, check that the photos are still accurate, and generally make sure everything is as up-to-date as possible, even though things will continue to change the day after the new guide is published!

This year, for the very first time, I hired a team of ed tech experts to help me with the update. The task was becoming overwhelming and I knew if I was going to keep it up, I had to have some help. Here they are below: Marnie Diem, Brandie Wright, Lucia Hassell, and Kim Darche.

Designing engaging learning experiences with the ABC Learning Design method

Designing engaging learning experiences with the ABC Learning Design method | Edumorfosis.it | Scoop.it

Developed by Clive Young and Nataša Perović for University College London (UCL), ABC Learning Design is a high-energy, collaborative workshop to engage academic teams in order to develop, design or redesign online courses or programs. This method has been adopted and adapted by the Moodle Academy team to design the free courses and programs available on Moodle Academy.

During the workshop, academic teams work together to create a student-centred ‘storyboard’ showing the type and sequence of learning activities required to meet the course or program’s learning outcomes, and how these will be assessed. While the workshop encourages better pedagogical conversations, the outcome is very practical and participants can take away a series of actions to implement in their courses.

Schools can expect a year of disruption. Here are 7 ways they can help support the well-being of students and staff

Schools can expect a year of disruption. Here are 7 ways they can help support the well-being of students and staff | Edumorfosis.it | Scoop.it

We investigated what schools have done during the pandemic to help support and maintain the well-being of their students and staff. We reviewed studies world-wide on the initiatives they used and listened to 25 experts – school leaders, teachers and school psychologists and counsellors – from public, independent, primary and secondary schools across Australia. Most participants (80%) were from Queensland schools and all had experienced school disruptions during the pandemic.

We pulled out seven steps schools can take to mitigate mental ill health during COVID-related disruptions and help staff, students and the school community deal with uncertainty.

HyFlex teaching is the black mirror of Higher Ed

HyFlex teaching is the black mirror of Higher Ed | Edumorfosis.it | Scoop.it

HyFlex is meant to pithily describe a method of teaching some students in person, in a traditional classroom, while simultaneously teaching other students remotely via Zoom or other remote video-streaming apps. Often these two different groups of students might overlap or switch places throughout the term. It is a style of teaching that involves carefully choreographing cameras, speakers and microphones in addition to navigating the traditional layout of a classroom with students present. The instructor becomes a performer, an emcee and a technologist (often a clumsy one, at that).

HyFlex teaching effectively means teaching two iterations of the same class, simultaneously: 1) a version taught more or less the old-fashioned way, and 2) a version mediated and modulated to far-flung students whom the instructor may never meet in person.

Edumorfosis's insight:

Three universities already teaching classes in the Metaverse

Three universities already teaching classes in the Metaverse | Edumorfosis.it | Scoop.it

It goes without saying that the pandemic has taken a heavy toll on the education sector. With rising infection rates, schools and universities are experiencing unpredictable disruption and an unclear path forward, pivoting between in-person and remote learning. This has left many students feeling disengaged and lacking the social interaction that comes with in-person learning.

As a result, universities are getting creative and exploring solutions that can allow students to feel together, even when they're physically apart. They're designing their own virtual campus and classrooms in the Metaverse to engage students, empower faculty, and bring the spark back to learning.

COVID-19 prompted a swift pivot to remote learning across higher education in 2020, exposing challenges in the technological infrastructure and financial sustainability that had been festering at many institutions for years.

In the long term, however, the staggering disruption to higher education’s traditional residential, face-to-face delivery model may also have an upside: a radical reimagining of the way colleges and universities conduct operations and serve their students.

What is Multimodal Learning?

What is Multimodal Learning? | Edumorfosis.it | Scoop.it

Have you ever had your teacher try to explain something to you in vain, only for you to understand after viewing an illustration about the concept? For a better-rounded educational experience, teachers have to be well versed in the implementation of multimodal learning.

Schools usually have a diverse student body consisting of students who all have different learning styles. While some students prefer an oral explanation on how to perform a task, others prefer a physical demonstration of the same. According to The Gordon Kelley Academic Success Center, students exposed to multiple learning styles (multimodal) can learn quicker, deeper, and also retain more of what they learned.

What is a Socratic Seminar?

What is a Socratic Seminar? | Edumorfosis.it | Scoop.it

The Socratic method is an ongoing dialogue that uses questions and answers to gradually eliminate hypotheses. Grant Wiggins offered a definition for the Socratic Seminar — something he would also call simply a ‘Seminar’:

A Seminar is a question-focused, student-led, and teacher-facilitated discussion, based on appropriate texts. Sometimes we call this activity a ‘Socratic Seminar’–after Socrates, well known for his open-ended dialogues. Sometimes we call it a ‘class discussion’ to signal that the class will discuss, with the teacher playing a moderator role. Whatever we call it, a seminar is different from a talk/recitation/ lecture-with-discussion. The goal is not the acquisition of knowledge via the expert; the aim is student understanding via active thinking out loud and probing of ideas by all students.”
