It isn't news that culture is obsessed with doing—with being in motion, with being occupied, with being busy. But the upshot of all this doing is that we spend very little time deciding exactly what we should be doing in the first place.
Real productivity is more than just activity, after all. And when we're asked to act upon (or ignore) hundreds of updates, requests, and interruptions every single day, to actually step back and decide can be much more difficult than to simply do. Amid all this bombardment, being truly productive depends upon your ability to say "no." In other words, what you don’t do on a daily basis is at least—if not more—important than what you actually do take action on. Via The Learning Factor

We often build instruction as if people are blank sheets of notebook paper on which we are writing. This is clearly a mistake (that causes problems) on numerous fronts.

Some people equate leadership to showing a “sense of urgency” as though effectiveness is demonstrated by the workplace equivalent of road rage. We reward action over outcomes. No time to do it right but we find time to do it over. When we respond slowly and deliberately it may seem to others that we don’t appreciate the importance or risk but in reality, we are demonstrating that it is too important to rush into a bad decision or overreaction. You already know what delaying gratification entails, which means you already know how difficult it is. Avoiding a temptation that's standing right in front of you so you can hold out for something substantially better down the line—for many of us, that's a losing battle.
But it's often a losing battle that helps win a war, like when a sports team rests its star players in an unimportant game so they can be at their best for the playoffs. And if you can manage to turn delaying gratification into a regular habit, you may be able to take your own performance from just mediocre to top-notch. Via The Learning Factor
