Ahead of this summit, at least 40 countries have expressed interest in joining including Iran, Saudi Arabia, Bangladesh and Argentina.

BRICS leaders meet in South Africa on Tuesday as the loose association of major emerging economies seeks to assert its voice as a counterweight to Western dominance in global affairs.

The so-called BRICS nations — Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa — represent a quarter of the global economy, and interest in joining the club has surged ahead of its three-day summit in Johannesburg.

Security has been bolstered across the city where South Africa’s President Cyril Ramaphosa will host China’s President Xi Jinping, India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Brazil’s President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and some 50 other leaders.

Russian President Vladimir Putin is the target of an international arrest warrant over alleged war crimes in Ukraine and will not attend in person, with Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov sent on his behalf.

Representing 40% of the world’s population across three continents, with economies at different levels of growth, the BRICS share a common desire for a global order they see as better reflecting their interests and rising clout.

The theme of its 15th summit is “BRICS and Africa” and comes as the continent emerges as a renewed diplomatic battleground with the United States, Russia and China jostling for economic and diplomatic influence.

On the eve of the summit, Ramaphosa said his country would “not be drawn into a contest between global powers” and strongly reaffirmed South Africa’s long-standing policy of non-alignment.

“We will urge the international community to refocus on development issues, promote a greater role by the BRICS cooperation mechanism in global governance, and make the voice of BRICS stronger,” China’s Xi said in an editorial published in South African media on Monday.

Division and demand

There is growing interest in the bloc, which began as four nations in 2009 but expanded the following year with the addition of South Africa.

Ahead of this summit, at least 40 countries have expressed interest in joining including Iran, Saudi Arabia, Bangladesh and Argentina, officials say.

South Africa will present BRICS leaders with a proposal to expand its membership and a decision on the matter is expected at the summit’s close.

But analysts are more cautious.

The issue of BRICS expansion is divisive, particularly among its two most powerful members, China and India.

China is keen to rapidly grow the bloc and widen its influence but observers say India is wary of the intentions of its regional rival.

“In my view, possible further extension will be considered during the course of this year and not decided at the summit to allow for more time,” said Jannie Rossouw, a professor of global political economy at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg.

The BRICS operate on consensus and that presents “a major obstacle” to decision-making, said Jakkie Cilliers, founder of the Pretoria-based Institute for Security Studies (ISS) think tank.

“In the long term, my view is that the inevitability of China-India rivalry is probably the major challenge that BRICS will eventually be confronted with,” he told AFP.

15th BRICS Summit, Day-2: India PM Narendra Modi to hold bilateral meeting President Cyril Ramaphosa

Sandton - On the second day of the 15th BRICS Summit, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday is scheduled to hold a bilateral meeting with South African President Cyril Ramaphosa.

Later in the day, PM Modi is scheduled to attend open and closed plenary sessions in Johannesburg.

The plenaries will be followed by a cultural performance and a banquet dinner hosted by President Ramaphosa.

The opening day of the 15th BRICS Summit in Johannesburg was witness to the BRICS Business Forum Leaders’ Dialogue.

In his address at the BRICS Business Forum Leaders' Dialogue, PM Modi said India will soon be a 5 trillion dollar economy and in the coming years will be the growth engine of the world.

PM Modi’s special message to the dialogue was that mutual trust and transparency can help create a big impact, especially in the Global South.

Meanwhile, Ramaphosa said as the country has an urbanised population and can provide a stable workforce in future, BRICS countries have an opportunity to contribute to and participate in Africa's growth story.

"Africa has a young digitally connecting and urbanizing population. A population that provides a stable workforce for companies in future. The investment in skills... continues to grow," President Ramaphosa said.

Soon after the Business Forum, PM Modi arrived at the Summer Place in Johannesburg to participate in the BRICS Leaders Retreat where the leaders of the grouping will deliberate on global developments and explore how to utilize the BRICS platform effectively to address and resolve global challenges.

Brazil's President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russia's Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov attended the event.

PM Modi arrived in South Africa earlier on Tuesday and received a ceremonial welcome at Waterkloof Air Force Base.

Upon his arrival, PM Modi received a rousing welcome from the Indian diaspora chanting 'Vande Mataram' and the members of the Indian community were waiting for PM Modi's arrival to welcome him with 'dhols' outside the Sandton Sun Hotel in Johannesburg.

Women members of the Indian diaspora tied 'Rakhi' to the wrist of PM Modi as they welcomed him to the country. The prime minister also inspected a model of the Swaminarayan Temple in Johannesburg.

The under-construction temple once completed by 2025 will be the largest Hindu temple in Africa and Southern Hemisphere.

This is PM Modi's third visit to South Africa and the trip marks the 30th anniversary of the diplomatic relationship between India and South Africa.

Initially formed as BRIC, a visionary concept coined by Goldman Sachs economist Jim O’Neil in 2001, BRICS comprises Brazil, Russia, India, and China - a collective representation of burgeoning emerging markets brimming with current and future economic prowess. In a momentous development in 2010, South Africa joined the bloc, prompting a change in the acronym to BRICS.

BRICS stands as a beacon of economic optimism, presenting an alternative global order to challenge the dominance of traditional institutions.

Full declaration by BRICS leaders at 15th BRICS Summit in Johannesburg

READ: Full declaration by BRICS leaders at 15th BRICS Summit in Johannesburg© Provided by Independent Online (IOL)

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa and chairperson of the 15th BRICS (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) Summit, on Thursday announced that BRICS leaders had officially adopted the Johannesburg II Declaration of the Summit.

The leaders affirmed their commitment to inclusive multilateralism, international law and the principles of the United Nations Charter.

Leaders of the Federative Republic of Brazil, the Russian Federation, the Republic of India, the People's Republic of China and the Republic of South Africa met in Sandton, South Africa, from August 22 to 24 for the 15th BRICS Summit held under the theme: "BRICS and Africa: Partnership for Mutually Accelerated Growth, Sustainable Development and Inclusive Multilateralism".

Ramaphosa said that as the BRICS nations build upon 15 years of BRICS Summits, the leaders further committed themselves to strengthening the framework of mutually beneficial BRICS cooperation and a fairer international order.

This was done under the three pillars of political and security, economic and financial, and cultural and people-to-people cooperation, and to enhance their strategic partnership for the benefit of their people through the promotion of peace, a more representative, a reinvigorated and reformed multilateral system, sustainable development and inclusive growth.

Partnership for Inclusive Multilateralism

The BRICS leaders reiterated their commitment to inclusive multilateralism and upholding international law, including the purposes and principles enshrined in the Charter of the UN as its “indispensable cornerstone”.

The BRICS leaders raised concern about the use of unilateral coercive measures, which they said, were incompatible with the principles of the Charter of the UN and produced negative effects in the developing world.

They further called for greater representation of emerging markets and developing countries, in international organisations and multilateral fora.

“We also call for increasing the role and share of women from emerging markets and developing countries at different levels of responsibilities in the international organisations,” the declaration read.

The declaration further reiterated its support for a comprehensive reform of the UN, including its Security Council, with a view to making it more democratic, representative, effective and efficient, and to increase the representation of developing countries in the Council’s memberships.

Fostering an Environment of Peace and Development

Leaders said they were concerned about the ongoing conflicts in many parts of the world and stressed their commitment to the peaceful resolution of differences and disputes through dialogue and inclusive consultations in a coordinated and cooperative manner.

They further recognised the importance of the increased participation of women in peace processes, including in conflict prevention and resolution, peacekeeping, peace-building, post-conflict reconstruction and development, and sustaining peace.

Partnership for Mutually Accelerated Growth

They noted that an unbalanced recovery from the shock and hardship of the pandemic was aggravating inequality across the world. The global growth momentum has weakened, and the economic prospects have declined owing to trade fragmentation, prolonged high inflation, tighter global financial conditions, in particular the increase in interest rates in advanced economies, geopolitical tensions and increased debt vulnerabilities.

They encouraged multilateral financial institutions and international organisations to play a constructive role in building global consensus on economic policies and preventing systemic risks of economic disruption and financial fragmentation.

The leaders noted that the African continent remained on the margins of the global trading system and has much to gain through BRICS collaboration.

Partnership for Sustainable Development

They urged donor countries to honour their Official Development Assistance (ODA) commitments and to facilitate capacity building and the transfer of technology, along with additional development resources to developing countries, in line with the national policy objectives of recipients.

They stressed the need for support of developed countries to developing countries for access to existing and emerging low-emission technologies and solutions that avoid, abate and remove Greenhouse Gas emissions and enhance adaptation action to address climate change.

Deepening People-to-People Exchanges

The declaration recognised that the youth was a driving force for accelerating the achievement of sustainable development goals.

“Leadership by young people is fundamental to accelerating a just transition premised on the principles of intergenerational solidarity, international cooperation, friendship, and societal transformation,” it said.

A culture of entrepreneurship and innovation must be nurtured for the sustainable development of the youth, the declaration read.

Institutional Development

The group reiterated the importance of further enhancing BRICS solidarity and cooperation based on their mutual interests and key priorities, to further strengthen their strategic partnership.

Two fighter jets spotted in Sandton for three days since the beginning of 15th BRICS Summit

Two fighter jets spotted in Sandton for three days since the beginning of 15th BRICS Summit | KHOEKHOE-XAM HERITAGE | Scoop.it

Johannesburg - Residents of Sandton and those visiting the area in the past three days as the country hosts the 15th BRICS Summit have been seeing and hearing the sounds of fighter jets.

Two fighter jets are regularly seen and heard making a loud noise flying over the Sandton Convention Centre.

At this stage, no official authority is prepared to give The Star official comment or details on the purpose of the fighter jets flying over the area at short intervals.

Already, there is a high presence of law enforcement agencies in and around the venue, where over 50 heads of state from across the globe are gathering for the summit, which ends today.

Morena Mokoena, an employee in one of the retail shops in Sandton City, said at first, after hearing the noise from the jets, he thought there was an attack because he is not used to the sound.

“I am aware that there is currently a BRICS summit taking place just outside my workplace, but the first time I heard the loud, unusual sound, I could not help but think there was some kind of an attack. During my lunch break while outside, I heard the sound. I looked up and spotted not one but two fighter jets,” said Mokoena.

Some citizens took to social media platform X (formerly known as Twitter) to express their thoughts towards the fighter jets.

X user Bo Mbinwane wrote: “SANDF drama. Every ten minutes fly pass!!! What fighter jets from which country are about to send missiles to Sandton? Drama. What intelligence product is making SAAF panic like this? Who is about to have an air assault in Sandton. So much money is being wasted flying Swedish jets!”

Another user, Mags Heystek, wrote: “Not everyday you see a fighter jet flying over Sandton. Oh wait, this is the third day in a row.”

Other citizens went as far as criticising the government for wasting money on these meticulous machines; however, it is not clear whether they are from South Africa or not.

“Why are these fighter jets just flying around the Sandton skies? How much does it cost to keep them in the air? All this window dressing surely comes with a huge price tag,” said Bev Thrilla.

If it happens that the jets might belong to the SANDF, it would be strange because, recently, it was reported that SANDF pilots are grounded due to non-airworthy aircraft and have instead been doing administration work while the crisis persists.

SANDF spokesperson General Andries Mahapa was reached for comment; however at the time of publishing there was no response.

Johannesburg hosts the BRICS Summit, showcasing the growing clout of Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. Over 60 leaders were invited, including 30 from Africa.

At the heart of the summit are talks about reducing dollar reliance and promoting local currencies in trade.

While doubts linger about a shared currency, the Chinese renminbi’s influence grows. The renminbi is gaining ground as a reserve currency in Africa, e.g., Mauritius, Nigeria, and Zambia.

According to Foreign Policy one of the focal points of the summit is the discussion around de-dollarisation and strategies to boost the use of local currencies in trade.

Despite doubts about the feasibility of adopting a joint currency, the potential for an increased role for the Chinese renminbi is considered likely. The renminbi is already being used as a reserve currency by several African nations, including Mauritius, Nigeria, and Zambia.

Ramaphosa’s stance is in part a response to escalating tensions between the United States and South Africa due to the latter’s close ties with Russia.

Despite accusations from the U.S. ambassador regarding weapon supply, Ramaphosa maintained South Africa’s commitment to seeking strategic partnerships rather than aligning with global powers.

The BRICS summit attendance is a reflection of Africa’s demand for reforms in institutions like the World Bank and International Monetary Fund. Algeria, for instance, has submitted a request to become a shareholder member of the BRICS New Development Bank, pledging $1.5 billion.

This move is seen as an effort to secure trade interests with Beijing and Moscow amid pressure to halt arms purchases from Russia.

India’s foreign policy addresses key issues on BRICS Summit outcomes

Johannesburg – Africa deserves to have a permanent seat in the UN Security Council.

This is the view of India’s foreign secretary Vinay Kwatra, who led an Indian high delegation during a media briefing on Thursday.

The Indian delegation also expressed its satisfaction with the resolutions and declarations made at the 15th BRICS Summit, which wrapped up its business at the Sandton Convention Centre on Thursday.

Addressing members of the media from the Southern Sun Hotel, Kwatra said India welcomes the declaration that decided on the expansion of the BRICS membership with the inclusion of six countries, which saw Argentina, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, the UAE, and Saudi Arabia being accepted into the BRICS bloc on the last day of the three-day summit.

Kwatra said the five countries that make up the BRICS reached a consensus that decided on the expansion.

"The issue of expansion received consensus. All the BRICS countries work on consensus, and their decisions are informed by set criteria, standards, and principles that guided the expansion of these six countries to be part of the BRICS bloc. When the decision was made and the declaration formulated, it was all based on this agreed-upon consensus," he said.

On the criteria used to accept new members of the bloc, Kwatra said considerations were based on strict criteria.

“The expansion was based on standard criteria and guidelines.

“The leaders of the BRICS countries expressed among the biggest sentiments that the countries should be able to contribute to their stature and influence,” he said.

In spite of reported tensions between India and China, Kwatra added that India and China have strong relations, and the leaders of the two countries met on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit and agreed to direct officials to intensify efforts at ensuring world peace and de-escalation and resolve issues along the LAC in the western sector of the Indian-China border areas.

He said peace and stability in this region were important to quell tensions that might exist between the two power houses.

“Our leaders met on the sidelines of the BRICS Summit and were able to capture the essence of our relations with China.

“Discussion among BRICS countries is always a priority in solving challenges,” he said.

Brics leaders have agreed to expand the club of major emerging economies and adopted conditions for entry, South Africa said Wednesday, as the bloc pursues greater clout to shape the world order.

Calls to enlarge the Brics — Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa — has dominated the agenda at its three-day summit in Johannesburg and exposed rifts between members.

China is seeking to rapidly grow the Brics amid rising competition with the United States but the group’s other major power, India, is wary of the intentions of its geopolitical rival.

South African officials say nearly two dozen countries have formally applied to join the Brics, which accounts for 40 percent of the world’s population and a quarter of the global economy.

Brics membership expands, six new countries to join from 2024

On Wednesday, South African Foreign Minister Naledi Pandor said Brics leaders had “agreed on the matter of expansion” and a detailed announcement would be made before the summit’s close on Thursday.

“We have a document that we have adopted that sets out guidelines and principles, processes, for considering countries that wish to become members of Brics,” Pandor told state-run Ubuntu Radio.

“That’s very positive.”

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi had told the summit he supported opening the door to new members and “welcomes moving forward with consensus”.

“We stand at the cusp of expanding the Brics family,” said South African President Cyril Ramaphosa.

The bloc makes decisions by consensus and no new members have been admitted since South Africa in 2010.

‘Turbulence and transformation’

Chinese President Xi Jinping, on just his second trip abroad this year, said expanding the bloc would “pool our strength (and) pool our wisdom to make global governance more just and equitable.”

“We gather at a time when the world is undergoing major shifts, divisions, and regrouping. It has entered a new period of turbulence and transformation,” said Xi, whose nation represents about 70 percent of the Brics total GDP.

US officials have played down the likelihood of Brics emerging as a geopolitical rival, describing the bloc as a “very diverse collection of countries” containing both friends and rivals.

The Brics are a disparate mix of big and small economies, democratic and authoritarian states, but share a collective desire to challenge the Western-led global order they say does not serve their interests or rising clout.

The summit has underlined divisions with the West over the war in Ukraine, and the support Russia enjoys from its Brics partners at a time of global isolation.

South Africa, China and India have not condemned Russia’s invasion while Brazil has refused to join Western nations in sending arms to Ukraine or imposing sanctions on Moscow.

Russian President Vladimir Putin, who faces an international arrest warrant over alleged war crimes in Ukraine, was the only Brics leader not to attend in person, and addressed the summit via video link where he railed against sanctions.

Russia was “desperate for friends and partners so it’s not surprising that they are so keen to have an expansion,” said Gustavo de Carvalho, senior researcher at the South African Institute of International Affairs.

Brics divide

Analysts said that in considering new members, Brazil, South Africa and India would have to balance a desire for good ties with China and Russia against the risk of estranging the United States, a major trading partner.

Like the Brics themselves, the countries applying vary greatly, from G20 giants like Indonesia and Saudi Arabia to isolated states like Iran that are openly hostile to the United States and its allies.

Some 50 heads of state and government have joined Brics leaders in Johannesburg.

Brics leaders say the level of interest was proof its message resonated deeply in the “Global South” — a broad term referring to nations outside the West.

Brazil’s President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, who has championed the Brics development bank as an alternative to the Washington DC-based lending institutions, said he supported the entry of Argentina.

But the South American powerhouse feared “diluting” the influence of Brics should it expand too quickly, said Carvalho.

“There is definitely a divide on Brics members at the moment,” he said.

This is what each of them said:

Brazil president Lula da Silva said they were ready to join efforts to end the conflict in Ukraine, calling for an immediate cease-fire and peace.

He said the Ukrainian war also showed the limitations of the United Nations Security Council. He added that there were also many other conflicts in the world that did not receive the due attention and caused massive suffering for its people.

President Lula called on the BRICS nations to lead the process of peace initiatives throughout the world.

“Everyone and all nations deserve to live in peace. The quest for peace is a collective effort,” he said.

He also added that it was very difficult for some nations to fight climate change when many countries were still fighting poverty, hunger and other challenges.

President Ramaphosa commended the Brazilians commitment to contributing to a peaceful world.

The Russian delegation to South Africa is headed by Foreign Minister, Sergey Lavrov.

Putin called on the BRICS countries to expand settlements in national currencies and interbank cooperation.

Speaking on the conflict with Ukraine, Putin said the desire of a number of Western countries to maintain their hegemony in the world led to the crisis in Ukraine. He said Russia's actions in this conflict was dictated only by the desire to end the war of extermination unleashed by the West.

He added that Russia was determined to actively participate in the implementation of the agreements reached on the creation of a joint working group on nuclear medicine

Next year, Russia plans to hold the BRICS meeting in October 2024 in Kazan. Putin said they plan to host about 200 political, economic and public events.

Chinese President Xi Jinping called on the leaders and participants of this BRICS Summit to always bear in mind the founding purpose of BRICS which was to bring to the world more certainty, stability and a positive energy.

He said the BRICS nations should expand political and security cooperation to uphold peace and tranquillity throughout the world as the geopolitical situation was getting “intense”.

President Jinping said the world entered a new era of turbulence and called on the BRICS family to remain united and be ready to play a key role in helping to stabilise the world.

“Development is not a privilege of a few but should be spread around so all can benefit.,” he said.

Jinping added that China intended to set up a BRICS remote data centre that would help develop technology and innovation in BRICS nations.

Talking about Artificial Intelligence, President Jinping said that AI was a new frontier of development, and although it may generate enormous dividends, it also harboured risks.

He said there was a need to develop AI governance and standards so as to make AI tech more secure, reliable, controllable and equitable.

Indian Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, gave the thumbs up to the expansion of the BRICS family.

This comes after a lot of countries have shown interest in joining the BRICS countries.

“We will keep working together to strengthen the voice of the global south as well,” he said

He said the expansion will ensure that the world economy is growing faster than before and will continue to improve the BRICS community in developing economies and nations.

He said the expansion will address poverty, education, technology, health services, and other issues that affect their ability to develop.

During his address, Modi suggested BRICS collaboration on the establishment of a Space Exploration Consortium, emphasising that its concentration on space research and meteorological monitoring would help develop new ways of measuring progress.

He also recommended joint efforts in education, technology, as well as skill assessment.

“Trade, defence, and investment linkages featured prominently in our discussions. We will keep working together to strengthen the voice of the global south as well,” he said.

South Africa’s Cyril Ramaphosa said there was a need for BRICS countries to advance the development interests of the global south, calling for industrialised countries to honour their commitments to support climate actions, including developing economies that have been affected before.

"Peace and stability are preconditions for a better, more equitable world. We are deeply concerned about conflicts across the world that continue to cause a great deal of suffering and hardship to many people around the world," Ramaphosa said.

Ramaphosa says trade between BRICS countries was over R3 trillion last year

President Cyril Ramaphosa says as the BRICS countries celebrate 15th anniversary at the 15th BRICS Summit in Sandt, Johannesburg, trade between BRICS countries totalled some $162 billion (R3 trillion) last year.

“Foreign investment has played an important role in the growth of BRICS economies.

“BRICS group of countries exists not only to strengthen government-to-government relations, but also to forge stronger ties between the peoples of our five nations. It is for this reason that several bodies have been established to enable cooperation across society,” he said.

Ramaphosa said annual foreign direct investment into BRICS countries is four times greater than it was 20 years ago.

“However, the new wave of protectionism and the subsequent impact of unilateral measures that are incompatible with WTO rules undermine global economic growth and development.

“We therefore need to reaffirm our position that economic growth must be underpinned by transparency and inclusiveness. It must be compatible with a multilateral trading system that supports a developmental agenda,” he said.

He said reform of global financial institutions was needed so that they could be more agile and responsive to the challenges facing developing economies.

“In this respect, the New Development Bank, established by BRICS countries in 2015, is leading the way… BRICS economies have emerged as powerful engines of global growth.

“Yet the rapid economic, technological and social changes underway create new risks for employment, equality and poverty in many BRICS countries.

“We therefore call on the business community to join hands with us to identify solutions to these and other challenges affecting our respective economies,” he said.

Three things that can make the BRICS currency feasible according to industry expert

One of the key discussions that will be closed at the historical BRICS 2023 summit will be the proposed creation of a new currency.

In a webinar hosted by the Inclusive Society Institute and its chief executive, Daryl Swanepoel, professor William Gumede gave his insights on the matter.

Gumede, who is the associate professor at the Wits School of Governance said it would take a significant amount of time to create a BRICS currency and that the process would be very complicated.

“The Russia-Ukraine war is likely to increase the de-dollarisation of the world. Russia is trying to circumvent Western economic sanctions against it as a result of its conflict.

BRICS Summit attracts widespread non-BRICS media attention

BRICS Summit attracts widespread non-BRICS media attention | KHOEKHOE-XAM HERITAGE | Scoop.it

The 15th BRICS Summit in Johannesburg has attracted widespread media attention with 1 356 media people being accredited. What is somewhat surprising is the interest shown by media from outside the BRICS grouping.

Samira Othman from the Swedish Broadcast Radio said she was interested to see whether the expansion in the BRICS would be approved this Summit. If not, she was hoping to see some clarity on the way forward.

Kserija Jelesijevic from Serbia reporting for Russia Today Balkan said her focus was on how BRICS would promote multilateralism through a reform of the United Nations Security Council and whether other countries would join BRICS. She was however disappointed with the lack of help that the media liaison provided as she wanted to interview South African politicians to get their response to Russia.

Kankan Song from the Shanghai Media Group said she had been anxious about coming to South Africa due to the perceived high crime rate, but was pleasantly surprised by how welcoming South Africans were and she would definitely come back to South Africa for a holiday. Her focus was not so much on the BRICS Summit, but rather on the 25th anniversary of diplomatic relations between South Africa and China.

Benedick Jenssen from Germany who was part of the hosted media contingent said this was his first BRICS Summit and he found it interesting and dynamic with a diverse range of interesting people. He writes on business and politics, so he had a chance to interact with South African business executives.

His interest was in how an expanded BRICS would be structured and he was fascinated in the interplay between India and China on the one hand, and China and Russia on the other hand.

Premier Says BRICS Summit Taking Place When Often Unheard Voices Are Striving to be Heard

“In an interdependent world, collectivity is essential to adequately solve global challenges,” he underscored.

The many crises we have faced as a global community, particularly after the COVID-19 pandemic, have further exposed how cooperation is key for our collective survival, the PM said.

Hence, a growing and inclusive multilateralism is essential to overcome common challenges and Ethiopia is committed to further enhancing multilateralism towards inclusivity.

Abiy added that at this crucial time, promoting dialogue in harmony is highly critical for overall peace and prosperity.

Ethiopia has always been a champion and defender of multilateralism, he noted, pointing out that the “BRICS is indeed one key initiative responding to the repeated calls for a new and inclusive multilateralism.”

As a founding member of the League of Nations and the Organization of African Unity, Ethiopia’s engagement in the international stage has been quite meaningful and impactful, the premier stressed.

“Ethiopia is Africa’s second most populous country with around 120 million people, a greater majority of which are young and dynamic. This demographic dividend, if harnessed properly, can be a significant asset for cooperation to driving innovation, consumption, and providing a large work force. Located in the Horn of Africa, Ethiopia also serves as a crucial gateway between Africa, the Middle East and wider Asia.”

According to Abiy, the efforts Ethiopia is making in intensive infrastructure development within and across the whole region is a testament to our endeavors towards regional integration.

Our strategic position could provide the BRICS with enhanced connectivity opportunities across these regions, the PM said.

Ethiopia’s substantial investment in roads, airlines, clean energy and telecom infrastructure not only demonstrate its ambition, but also our potential to be a hub of connectivity for the African continent. Our positioning offers a vital link to east Africa’s market and has a potential to foster a richer and more inclusive integration of the global economy.

“My country has also recorded one of the highest economic growth in Africa and has showcased its potential to become one of the continent’s largest economies. This growth is backed by a mix of agriculture, manufacturing and services, demonstrating a diversified and resilient economy.”

For the past five years, Ethiopia has also been in the driver's seat to practical solutions to address climate change through its massive Green Legacy Initiative tree planting program.

The initiative launched in 2019 will be the largest afforestation program in the world when by 2026 we will have planted 50 billion trees in a total of 8 years. Until last week, we have already planted 32 billion tree seedlings, Abiy added. “Over the past two years our green legacy program has spread to neighboring countries in the Horn region as we collaboratively work on green diplomacy.”

Furthermore, the premier indicated that Ethiopia has been active participant of regional and international diplomacy, including its long standing contribution to UN peacekeeping mission.

“Our rich historic past, the depth of our bilateral ties across the world as well as being forerunners of key global, regional and multilateral institutions not only makes Ethiopia instrumental to BRICS bloc but a key voice for inclusivity in the global arena.”

He also pointed out that in joining the BRICS, Ethiopia aspires to build bridges, foster understanding and works towards a shared future that benefits all.

Reports from Business Live, and the world’s media, have lauded President Cyril Ramaphosa and South Africa for its ‘political mastery’ in guiding the 15th BRICS Summit and expanding the bloc. Russian President Vladimir Putin, speaking virtually at the summit on Thursday, singled out President Ramaphosa.

Similarly, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said the three-day summit had achieved positive outcomes. “India has always fully supported the expansion of BRICS membership. The addition of new members will further strengthen BRICS as an organisation. It will give our shared efforts a new impact. I am pleased that our teams … agreed on the guiding principles, standards, criteria and procedures,” Modi said.

WHO ARE THE NEW MEMBERS?

Despite much speculation, no concrete progress was made on a BRICS Currency. President Putin of Russia said the matter of a common currency would have to be discussed further in future. However, he did say that BRICS member states resolved to work on trading in local currencies rather than the US Dollar.

In alphabetical order, the BRICS nations from 2024 will now be comprised of:

  • Argentina
  • Brazil
  • China
  • Egypt
  • Ethiopia
  • India
  • Iran
  • Russia
  • Saudi Arabia

The five BRICS developing nations will admit Saudi Arabia, Iran, Ethiopia, Egypt, Argentina and the United Arab Emirates, they said on Thursday, a move aimed at growing the clout of the bloc as it pushes to re-balance the prevailing world order.
