Traditional classroom learning is, arguably, the most commonly used style of learning across the world. Typically, it's a face-to-face learning approach that takes place in a physical location.

After the global school lockdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic, countries have been exploring a variety of hybrid learning modalities as they re-open schools. But what exactly is Hybrid Learning?
To put it simple, hybrid or blended learning is any combination of in-person and remote learning. By no means is it something new. The approach has been implemented for years in education , especially with the disruption of digital technologies. Given the mounting efforts and interest that countries are devoting to hybrid learning, in this blog (which is part of a series highlighting key lessons from a forthcoming study to understand the perceived effectiveness of remote learning solutions) we examine distinctive features to categorize it, examples from country experiences, and seven enabling factors that should be considered for its effective implementation.

"The report to UNESCO, Learning: The Treasure Within (1996), was among the first official documents to explicitly advocate for an integrated vision for education. According to it, all education should be based on four pillars: learning to know, learning to do, learning to live together and learning to be. The report was written in January 1996 and, over time, through quite some renaming and resizing, the four pillars have made their way into our school curricula, teaching materials and training programs. No exception should be made for the virtual classroom.
When teaching online, in fact, we can offer plenty of opportunities for our students to:"

The last two years have been mentally and emotionally exhausting for everyone in education. As I work with leadership teams, many are struggling to engage their teachers in professional learning this year. Schools invested money in purchasing devices and improving access to reliable internet to meet the demands of the pandemic, and leadership teams want to keep the momentum going. They are excited about the potential of leveraging this technology to create more dynamic, differentiated, and student-centered learning experiences.

[Hybrid Teaching] at its core it’s a model that defines where students are. Blended learning, conversely, is about the activities the students are doing as part of their learning. It’s about educators incorporating educational technology into their activities and lesson plans.

When the pandemic struck, and in the year that followed, higher education found itself grappling not only with how to transition entirely to remote learning but also with an existential crisis of sorts. Facing concerns about student technology access, tenuous enrollment numbers, value propositions and more, higher education quickly realized it needed a path forward. In remote, online and hybrid learning, some colleges and universities are finding that path — or at least some of its paving stones. Now, higher education technology leaders believe mixed-modality models, such as hybrid learning, will remain in force even as universities look beyond COVID-19. To be effective, however, those offerings will need to go further as schools try to provide educational experiences of equal value to past modalities and settings. A recent Deloitte report, for instance, states that nearly 80 percent of undergraduate students said their online courses lacked the engagement of in-person classes.

In 2020, almost every team was talking about remote work. How to do it effectively, what the challenges were and if it was a good fit for them. In 2021, the conversation has now shifted to discussion of the hybrid model. How can organizations combine remote workers with an in-person component at their existing office spaces now that people are starting to gather in person again?
As workplaces start to reopen, organizations are finding that their workforce is not keen to give up remote work. People who started working remotely due to COVID-19 overwhelmingly support it and want to continue doing so. Companies can no longer say that they can’t operate remotely (a common reason to avoid remote work pre-2020), but with an ongoing global pandemic, they also can’t ask employees to come back to the office full-time. The most popular solution is the thing that every organization seems to be grappling with at the moment — the hybrid model.

Nearly a year has passed since Washington’s schools closed due to COVID-19. The state’s children are suffering a mental and behavioral health crisis so troubling that Gov. Jay Inslee has ordered educators to reopen their classrooms next month.
This crisis is the “result of the ongoing pandemic, which has been exacerbated by continued isolation, difficulty engaging with virtual learning, and lack of regular in-person interaction with educators, school personnel, mentors and peers,” states an emergency proclamation signed by the governor on Monday.
Or as my own sixth-grade daughter recently expressed her thoughts on online learning: “I feel like a part of me is lost.”
So why has the remote education experience been so awful? And has it been all bad, or have aspects of distance education succeeded and merit continuing when “normal” returns?
