People assume misinformation spreads because people are ignorant.
This Science paper suggests something more uncomfortable:
Misinformation spreads because it is often better entertainment.
It gives you villains. Victims. Moral outrage.
A reason to feel righteous.
Science usually responds with error bars.
What if we became better at exposing the outrage machine itself.
When someone says: "They're poisoning your food."
Don't just explain why the claim is wrong.
Show the audience the playbook.
Villain. Victim. Fear. Urgency. Product placement.

Is there a ‘crisis’ of trust in science? 🧪 I scrutinized this idea in my latest feature for Nature – and found some surprises.

Data and interviews show that:
➡️ There’s certainly a *feeling* that the public have lost trust in science, given attacks on research in the US and growing vaccine hesitancy.
➡️ But in fact, data suggest that public trust in science is pretty high globally. Scientists are one of the most trusted professions – up there with teachers and doctors. There’s no worldwide collapse in trust.
➡️ The idea of a crisis has actually become a simplistic shorthand for a variety of more nuanced problems.
➡️ In the US, in particular, trust in science is becoming polarized along political lines. Confidence in science has fallen among those who lean Republican, but not among those who lean Democrat, surveys show. There's signs of polarisation in some (but certainly not all) other countries.
➡️ And in many places, people are increasingly questioning evidence on divisive issues such as vaccines – partly because scientific information is being drowned out on social media. Some say scientists are losing influence, not trust.
➡️ The threat now, say researchers, is that the Trump administration is using the idea that science is not trustworthy to justify drastic cuts to research and undermining of evidence-based approaches such as vaccines.
➡️ Solutions are, of course, complex e.g. increasing the influence of credible scientific information on social media platforms (hard, when algorithms favour outrage over facts); greater openness about uncertainties in science; and testing what works to address people’s specific concerns e.g. around vaccines.
My story is part of a Nature special issue on trust in science, which also includes insightful articles from Mark Henderson, Tracey Brown, Chris Tyler, Laura dos Santos Boeira, David Budtz Pedersen PhD and others.

Comment exercer son esprit critique sans tomber dans la méfiance généralisée ?
Comment construire une information plus fiable et accessible aux jeunes ?
Voilà certaines des questions qui ont été abordées ce matin lors de la conférence "Info, Infox, Influence ?" organisée par le Ministère des Sports, de la Jeunesse et de la Vie associative en partenariat avec DE FACTO et GEN.EU (AFP), Pol l'application et le CIDJ.
C'était hier mardi 30 juin, au Quartier Jeunes. Isabelle Wirth, Edouard Dambrine, Anna Baldy et Dahvia Ouadia ont échangé autour de notre rapport à l'information, les méthodes pour l'influence, mais aussi les réflexes pour savoir démêler le vrai du faux.
De Facto et le réseau European Digital Media Observatory ont été cité parmi les outils utiles pour appréhender ces enjeux.

My latest article is deeply personal... and I can't tell you how nervous I was to hit "post." I wrote about my son's ADHD diagnosis and how I surprised even myself when I hesitated to give him medication for it. I describe how my "mama bear instinct" almost steered me away from the thing that would help him most.
I was nervous to share this because I worried the medical and scientific community would "judge" my hesitation. But the reality is that "parental instinct" is often cited as the reason why people don't do things like vaccinate, or give antibiotics, or carry out any number of medical and public health interventions. So I think it's important that we, in the scientific community, acknowledge that "mama bear instinct" instead of telling people to ignore it. It is not either/or! We just need to learn to trust it alongside the evidence, and alongside the experts who can help us figure out what it's actually trying to tell us.

« La désinformation française n’est pas un nuage diffus de gens qui partagent n’importe quoi. »
L’étude de Saper Vedere s’attache à décrypter l’écosystème français de la désinformation, ses communautés, ses cibles, sa structuration…
L’étude analyse 18 fake news, sélectionnées parmi celles débunkées par TF1 dans sa rubrique de fact-checking.
💡 Parmi les enseignements clés :
➡️ La désinformation française n’est pas dispersée, elle a des cibles claires : 84% des publis analysées visent Emmanuel Macron, son entourage ou l’exécutif. Autour de ce noyau, d’autres cibles : institutions (Assemblée, Sénat, Banque de France), figures de l’écologie et de la science (GIEC, experts, militants).
➡️ L’objectif n’est pas seulement de discréditer, c’est d’éroder la confiance dans ce qui fait autorité.
➡️ Une technique classique d’ingénierie de l’information est largement utilisée : l’utilisation de faux noms de domaine imitant des médias.

📈 Why don't epidemics stop the moment herd immunity is reached?
One of the most misunderstood concepts in epidemiology is epidemic overshooting.
Many people assume that once a population reaches the herd immunity threshold, an outbreak immediately comes to an end. In reality, epidemics often continue beyond that point.
Why?
Because many individuals are already infected and continue transmitting the disease before the outbreak eventually slows and stops. This additional wave of infections beyond the herd immunity threshold is known as overshooting.
Think of it like a speeding train: even after the brakes are applied, it doesn't stop instantly. It continues moving before finally coming to rest.
This concept reminds us why timing matters in public health.
✅ Early interventions reduce unnecessary infections.
✅ Vaccination before widespread transmission can significantly limit epidemic overshoot.
✅ Mathematical models such as the SIR and SEIR models help us understand these dynamics and support evidence-based public health decisions.
Epidemiology is more than counting cases, it's about understanding disease dynamics to better protect communities and save lives.

HOT OFF THE PRESS 📢 First United Nations report on AI is out. What are the biggest threats from AI misinformation + disinformation❓
1. Users should NOT treat linguistic confidence as evidence of factual reliability
"False claims can be as persuasive as true ones. Between 15% and 40% of claims from optimized models were rated as likely to be misinformation, yet false claims proved as persuasive as true ones. This shows that persuasive effectiveness does not depend on truth, creating risks in electoral, health and public information contexts."
2. HARMS disproportionately affect marginalized populations + power is dangerously concentrated
"Some 99% of deepfake videos target girls and women including women journalists. AI is being used to promote misogyny online with deterring effects. Further, 88% of leading AI researchers are male."
3. National strategies to address disinformation are SCARCE
"An OECD assessment across 23 countries found that strategies for addressing disinformation remain the exception. Most existing frameworks have not incorporated insights from persuasion science. Governance should not only target content moderation but aim to address the economic, technical and cognitive infrastructure that makes disinformation profitable and persuasive."
4. AI-generated content is DISTORTING our perception of reality
"Synthetic media are also eroding the ability of the public and institutions to distinguish authentic from generated content. AI-mediated news and information systems may also affect the financial sustainability of journalism and other institutions that support information integrity. There are documented cases of elections being heavily influenced by AI-generated deepfakes targeting candidates."
5. Three THREATS to democracy and public institutions
"Epistemic erosion is the gradual weakening of the collective ability to distinguish truth from falsehood. The liar’s dividend is the benefit that a bad actor gains because deepfakes exist; real evidence becomes easier to deny. Synthetic consensus is AI-generated content manufactured at scale to simulate broad public agreement where none exists. Together these corrode the shared reality required for civil society, social cohesion and democratic deliberation."
6. Governance attention must shift from content to SYSTEMS
"The primary drivers of harm are design and deployment decisions – underlying system architectures of influence, including targeting, amplification and behavioural design – not individual outputs [...] Governance that targets only what AI systems produce will consistently fall behind systems engineered to generate and distribute persuasive content at scale."
7. Headline AI deployment figures should be read with caution because of AI WASHING
"AI washing – false, misleading or exaggerated claims about AI capabilities [...] Worldwide adoption has scaled rapidly. Yet early evidence on productivity impacts is mixed and institution-dependent."

Florida's push to eliminate school vaccine mandates collapsed when a live measles outbreak — and the lawmakers who couldn't ignore it — made the political and public health cost too high to pay.
Now RFK Jr. is running the same playbook nationally.
He's fired all 17 federal vaccine advisors, rewritten vaccine policy, and pulled flu shot ads during a deadly outbreak.
At Lackland Air Force Base, 275 troops got the flu after vaccine mandates were eliminated. Nobody at the federal level is pumping the brakes. Less vaccines means more disease. We've seen it in Florida. We're watching it happen nationally in real time.
That's why Ask Nurses and Doctors mobilizes healthcare professionals to speak up, share the facts, and fight for leaders who make public health a policy priority. Florida proved that facts can win. We need that same accountability now, at the federal level, before the consequences become impossible to ignore for all of us.

Every caregiver wants a healthy child. Building confidence in vaccines starts with understanding people's concerns and responding with empathy, transparency, and accurate, evidence-based information.
On the second day of the virtual Strengthening Vaccine Confidence training, participants explored the critical role journalists play in fostering public trust in immunization. Through interactive discussions on Adverse Events Following Immunization (AEFI) and Vaccine-Related Events (VREs), they examined common misconceptions, strengthened their understanding of vaccine safety, and learned how responsible, evidence-based reporting can help counter misinformation, address public concerns, and reinforce confidence in the vaccination program.

🌍 94% of countries saw vaccine confidence decline
WHY IT MATTERS:
The Lancet just published the most comprehensive mRNA safety synthesis yet. Billions of doses, decades of data, one gap: the science keeps compounding; public trust didn't follow.
KEY RESULTS:
-> 87% effective against infection (meta-analysis, 68 studies)
-> 93% against hospitalization, 94% against mortality
-> Myocarditis: 12-35 cases/million after dose 2, lower than COVID-19 infection itself
-> Clearance: mRNA gone in 7-14 days.
👉 The platform is expanding: cancer neoantigen vaccines, HIV, RSV, and rare metabolic diseases are all now in trials.
Yes, but: most evidence is still COVID-19-specific. Newer indications need their own surveillance base.

Aucun de vous n'est seul, qui combattez à votre niveau la désinformation scientifique. Vous restez prudemment dans votre domaine, et vous avez raison, mais vous n'êtes pas seuls et c'est très différent. Les initiatives se multiplient, dans de plus en plus de domaines.
Le GRAND DEBUNK DE LA SANTE

1️⃣ Ils font des constats sans complaisance pour eux-mêmes et avec la rigueur qui caractérise l’honnêteté intellectuelle :
- Augmentation massive des fake news de santé dans le débat public,
- Défiance envers les experts donc l’importance que les gens développement leur propre capacité de jugement s’ils veulent juger seul,
- Criticité de la prévention dans un monde où garantir la couverture de santé va devenir de plus en plus difficile car de plus en plus étendue et exigeante
2️⃣ Ils soulèvent les questions associées à ces constats :
- Comment les fake news « collent » à notre esprit et dans le débat public malgré les rétractations, preuves, démonstrations par les faits?
- Quel rôle des journalistes et des médias dans le relais de ces fake news?
- Comment évaluer la perte de chance voire la responsabilité directe dans la mort de quelqu’un dont une fake news est à l’origine, comment la juger?
- Comment les lobbys idéologiques arment-ils les autres, comment les identifier y compris dans le corps scientifique?
3️⃣ Ils initient une réflexion collective et identifient des pistes:
- La méthode scientifique (doute constructif, multiplication des sources, pertinence statistique...) est un repère commun applicable quel que soit le domaine et le niveau de maîtrise, mais que peu partagent
- Les experts à la connaissance la plus étendue ou actuelle sont aussi ceux qui sont le moins disponibles aux journalistes
- La peur est la meilleure fabrique de l’influence, et le meilleur outil du complotisme
- la période est difficile, c’est une occasion d’apprendre à profiter de ce qui est bien, mais aussi de relever le challenge et d’affronter les enjeux.

Today marks 11 years since California enacted SB277, eliminating personal and religious vaccine exemptions for school and daycare attendance.
The law transformed vaccine policy in California and sparked ongoing conversations about informed consent, parental rights, and access to scientific information.
Physicians for Informed Consent (PIC) was founded to help provide physicians, parents, and policymakers with evidence-based educational materials on infectious diseases, vaccines, and vaccine policy.
Resources like PIC's recently released Vaccines and the Diseases They Target: An Analysis of Vaccine Safety and Epidemiology (the Silver Booklet) are made possible through the support of donors who value informed consent and scientific transparency.
