"Oregon’s already low kindergarten vaccination rates may worsen after the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention this month stopped recommending the hepatitis B vaccine at birth.

Public health experts decried the controversial decision, which overturned 30 years of guidance that cut rates of liver disease and cirrhosis.

Oregon is part of a new public health collaborative with Hawaii, California and Washington, the West Coast Health Alliance, that works to support evidence-based vaccination schedules and policy, and recommends the vaccine.

Compared with those states, however, public health officials here may face a tougher task. By law, Oregon parents can claim both “medical” and “personal” exemptions to leave their children unvaccinated.

At 9.7%, Oregon has the third-highest kindergarten vaccine opt-out rate in the country, nearly triple the nation’s 3.4%. Idaho ranks first (15.1%), followed by Utah (10%)."

As the United States continues to experience outbreaks of pertussis, also known as whooping cough, false rumors wrongly claim that because the DTaP (diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis) vaccine is a multi-dose series, the vaccine isn’t effective. Multiple studies have confirmed that the DTaP vaccine is safe, effective and is the best way to protect a child from the serious effects of whooping cough.
  
Key Facts
Pertussis is a highly contagious bacterial infection that causes uncontrollable coughing fits. As infants or children try to catch their breath between coughs, they make a "whooping" sound, which is why pertussis is also called whooping cough.  
The most effective way to protect against whooping cough is immunization with the DTaP vaccine and its boosters. It is given in five doses in infancy through early childhood.
The initial series helps the body develop immunity, and booster doses ensure that protection doesn’t fade over time.  
While DTaP is a vaccine for diphtheria, tetanus, and pertussis, in the U.S., it is typically given as a “combination vaccine to protect against other infections, too. 
Pertussis is especially dangerous for young babies, who are at high risk of hospitalization and death. Around a third of infants under six months old who came down with whooping cough in 2024 required hospitalization.
It is also important that women who are pregnant receive the vaccine to protect newborns. 
Repeated doses of Tdap in adults are not recommended as a primary strategy to reduce the overall burden of pertussis in adults. The vaccine plays a critical role in protecting infants and those most vulnerable, but it's not intended as a routine measure to prevent pertussis in the general adult population.
Complications of pertussis include pneumonia, vomiting, seizures, shortness of breath and apnea, which is when breathing temporarily stops. Infants often turn blue during coughing spells because of lack of oxygen.  
Evidence Snapshot
According to data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), whooping cough cases have increased dramatically. In 2024, 35,493 cases were reported — up from 7,099 cases in 2023. The pertussis vaccine helps children’s immune systems develop the best protection against whooping cough. For children who get all 5 doses on schedule, DTaP fully protects 98% of children within the year following the last dose and about 71% of children 5 years after getting the last dose of DTaP.

The only misunderstanding here is why the anti-vaccine groups like McCullough Foundation continue to push lies of excess mortality related to vaccines and denying the true benefits of vaccines. While McCullough Foundation is making unconfirmed and false claims that the vaccines were killing individuals, large country wide studies like the attached one from France show otherwise. 22 million French individuals, 4 years of follow-up have shown that COVID vaccines reduced risk of death from COVID in the 70plus% but also showed that excess mortality never happened as pointed by a reduction of all cause mortality by 29%. Beyond such data confirming efficacy and safety of COVID vaccines, it confirms that McCullough Foundation was lying throughout their posts…

This is what we witnessed at this week’s ACIP vaccine meeting: rhetoric dressed up as “science,” delivered with confidence but completely untethered from evidence, and often from reality.

As I told The Washington Post:

“The most dangerous misinformation is the kind that’s wrapped in the appearance of scientific authority. It makes it incredibly difficult for parents, who are simply trying to do the right thing, to tell fact from fiction.”

Some leading vaccine manufacturers could be exposed to litigation they've been protected from for decades if the U.S. decides to adopt a new childhood vaccine schedule resembling Denmark's, as it appears likely to do in the new year.

Why it matters: The threat of expensive lawsuits could ultimately drive vaccine makers from the U.S. market, upending access to shots like those protecting against the seasonal flu, hepatitis and meningitis.

Driving the news: The Department of Health and Human Services is planning to propose a new childhood vaccine schedule. Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. came close to promoting Denmark's slimmed-down recommendations before pulling back on Friday, Politico reported.

But the change is still likely to happen — a risky political gamble, but one seemingly in sync with President Trump's recent directive to top health officials to "align U.S. core childhood vaccine recommendations with best practices from peer, developed countries."

"The final decisions and announcement have been postponed until the new year," said Robert Malone, vice chair of a key Centers for Disease Control and Prevention advisory committee and an ally of Kennedy.

The decision "regarding the revised vax schedule will rely on other medical advisers," not the CDC advisory committee he is a part of, Malone added. "Final plans must pass internal legal review before announcement and deployment."

What they're saying: "Unless you hear it from HHS directly, this is pure speculation," said HHS spokesperson Andrew Nixon when asked about reports the U.S. has designs on embracing Denmark's schedule.

But a recent CDC advisory committee hearing featured a presentation on the Danish vaccine schedule.

Malone wrote a Substack post on the U.S. adoption of the Danish schedule on Thursday, concluding that "this could be ... the biggest Christmas present ever for Children's Health Defense, The Informed Consent Action Network, a wide array of smaller organizations representing vaccine injured, and the trial lawyers of America."

Between the lines: Adopting a slimmer childhood vaccine schedule could have a domino effect.

The most direct outcome would be a potential falloff in the number of U.S. children who receive the non-recommended vaccines, followed by a rise in the prevalence of those diseases.

But pulling back official recommendations could also effectively unwind the federal liability protections that have shielded vaccine manufacturers for decades.

"FDA Commissioner Marty Makary, MD, MPH, claims that Lyme disease came from a military laboratory called “Lab 257 on Plum Island” near Lyme, Connecticut. Of course, HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. said on his podcast in 2024 that Lyme disease was “highly likely” to have been developed as a military weapon at Plum Island.

Part of this conspiracy theory is that the disease arose from US biodefense research that involved a former Nazi physician who was spared the death penalty at the Nuremberg Trials and later assisted the military. As a result of this “research,” infected ticks were explored as weapons.

Unfortunately for the conspiracists, the bacteria that cause Lyme disease have been around for thousands of years, well before this secret laboratory existed. If it ever really existed.

"Six days after a senior FDA official sent a sweeping internal email claiming that COVID vaccines had caused the deaths of "at least 10 children," 12 former FDA commissioners released an extraordinary warning in the Dec. 3 issue of the New England Journal of Medicine.

They wrote that the claims and policy changes in the memo from Vinay Prasad, the head of the FDA's Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research, pose "a threat to evidence-based vaccine policy and public health security" and break sharply from long-standing scientific norms.

What is unfolding inside the FDA is not a narrow dispute over COVID vaccines. It is an attempt, according to critics and vaccine scientists, to rewrite the rules governing the entire U.S. vaccine system—how risks are weighed, how benefits are proved, and how quickly lifesaving shots reach the public. Former agency leaders warn that if these changes take hold, the consequences could be lasting: fewer vaccines, slower updates, weakened public trust, and more preventable outbreaks.

Prasad made clear he sees the moment as corrective. "Never again will the US FDA commissioner have to himself find deaths in children for staff to identify it," he wrote, telling employees the agency's mission, and its "worldview," would change."

"The AAP continued to stand up for science-based vaccine policies and access to vaccines during a hearing in federal court on Wednesday.

Attorneys for the AAP and other medical groups told a U.S. district court judge in Boston that Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.’s changes to immunization schedules and improper appointment of vaccine advisers are causing ongoing harm. The judge is expected to rule in early January if the lawsuit the AAP and other groups filed against Kennedy and other health officials can proceed.

AAP President Susan J. Kressly, M.D., FAAP, said after the hearing that families need strong government leadership and clarity amid a surge in measles cases and the start of respiratory virus season.

“They deserve thoughtful, deliberative guidance grounded in medical evidence,” Dr. Kressly said in a press release. “They deserve access to immunizations for their children without confusion and chaos. And their pediatricians will do all we can — from the clinic to the courthouse — to keep children healthy, to speak up for them and to fight for them.""

"An outspoken attorney for the anti-vaccine movement — whose law firm has filed numerous vaccine-related lawsuits — delivered a jargon-laden presentation for more than 90 minutes about the history of childhood immunization and accused the CDC of recommending shots with insufficient research on potential harms.

Such moments at the two-day meeting of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) prompted incredulity from some vaccine experts, medical associations and Democratic elected officials. They argued that the panel, which for decades has guided access to immunizations, has lost all credibility under Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., a longtime vaccine skeptic who has appointed a raft of anti-vaccine activists or critics of immunization policy to federal health positions. After telling senators during a confirmation hearing that he supports the childhood immunization schedule, Kennedy has since taken steps to begin overhauling the series of vaccinations that he has long blamed as a potential cause of childhood illness."

📄 An economic evaluation of pneumococcal conjugate vaccination (PCV) in China finds that introducing PCV13 into provincial childhood immunization programs in Qinghai and Hainan could substantially cut disease burden while remaining good value for money.

👉 Researchers estimated that a three-dose PCV13 schedule could avert around 13,300 pneumococcal disease episodes and 184 deaths across the two provinces, compared with current limited, privately financed use of PCV.

💡 This study shows that prioritizing PCV13 in subnational immunization programs can improve child health and promote health equity in under-served provinces.

What about the Hib vaccine? Introduced in 1985, the Hib vaccine has significantly reduced incidence of noticeable cases of Hib infections in children, but studies show mass vaccination may increase non type b Haemophilus influenzae strains.

Also, the manufacturer's package insert provides details on vaccine ingredients, adverse reactions, and evaluations. It notes that PedvaxHIB hasn't been assessed for carcinogenicity, mutagenicity, or effects on fertility, and the risk of permanent disability or death from the vaccine hasn't been proven lower than that of Hib.
