A Quick-Guide To Teaching Empathy In The Classroom | #Understanding each other | #ModernEDU | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
By teaching students these skills in an authentic, applicable way, will they see each other differently? It’s worth finding out. With so many curricular and time restraints on teachers, how can we be expected to explicitly teach empathy in a meaningful way?

A Definition Of Empathy

Webster’s dictionary defines empathy as: the action of understanding, being aware of, being sensitive to, and vicariously experiencing the feelings, thoughts, and experience of another of either in the past or present without having the feelings, thoughts, and experience fully communicated in an objectively explicit manner; also: the capacity for this.

Say you want to create the next generation of voice recognition-enabled, AI-ensmartened, buzzword-laden gadget. The fist thing you need to do is pick a platform. Arduino isn’t powerful enough. The Raspberry Pi works great for prototyping, but going from Pi to production is a many-step process. Next Thing‘s Chip Pro is stepping up to fill the gap with a smart development kit for IoT creators.

How to transform schools into Learning Organisations? | #ModernLEARNing #ModernEDU

How to transform schools into Learning Organisations? | #ModernLEARNing #ModernEDU | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
Schools nowadays are required to learn faster than ever before in order to deal effectively with the growing pressures of a rapidly changing environment. Many schools however, look much the same today as they did a generation ago, and too many teachers are not developing the pedagogies and practices required to meet the diverse needs of 21st-century learners.

In response, a growing body of scholars, educators and policy makers around the world is making the case that schools should be re-conceptualised as “learning organisations” that can react more quickly to changing external environments, embrace innovations in internal organisation, and ultimately improve student outcomes.

Despite strong support for and the intuitive appeal of the school as a learning organisation, relatively little progress has been made in advancing the concept, either in research or practice. This lack of progress partly stems from a lack of clarity or common understanding of the school as learning organisation.

Blogs: Do They Serve Any Real Purpose? | #Blogging #ICT #Communication #LEARNing2LEARN #LEARNingByDoing | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
Does the average person even know or understand what a blog is? Do professionals understand how blogs influence their profession? Are teachers using blogs as both relevant reading and writing tools? Are students using blogs to create their voice? Do people in general see any importance in blogging to reflect, question, criticize, or improve the world in which we live?

Do blogs have a value in our world today that is at least understood, if not appreciated, by those who should? Does the access to blogs require too much tech savvy, critical thinking, and a mindset different from the 20th Century to prevent the acceptance of blogs as a change force in our 21st Century world?

Will a large enough group of people even read this post to make a difference or will people need to print it out to share copies with others?

It wasn’t too long ago that student use of “chatspeak” — texting shorthand, Internet slang, or even emoji — in the classroom seemed as if it might signal the end of grammar and the death of proper English. But with 78 percent of teenagers having access to cell phones, and the majority of children picking one up by age 12, chatspeak is here to stay.

Criticism Is Not Feedback | #LEARNing2LEARN #Coaching #ModernEDU

Criticism Is Not Feedback | #LEARNing2LEARN #Coaching #ModernEDU | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
Are You Open to Feedback?

Some people avoid feedback like the plague. They think that if they don’t know their flaws, they don’t have any. It shouldn’t come as a surprise that these folks make the same mistakes over and over again. Other people evade constructive feedback by surrounding themselves with yes people. They’d rather receive confirmation of their own ideas than be challenged by opposing views. While that might do wonders for their ego, it does little to advance their cause. The fact is, surrounding yourself with yes people is like talking to yourself.

Feedback should be welcomed rather than feared.

In fact, we should thank folks who make the effort to nurture us with their valuable input –– even if it hurts at times. How do you expect to become a better person if you don’t know where to begin? The truth is, practice doesn’t make perfect if you’re doing it wrong. Feedback enables us to learn about our shortcomings and take corrective action. Don’t bury your head…nourish it. That’s how excellence is born.

Aplicaciones digitales para docentes del siglo XXI
Ella Barresi's curator insight, May 27, 2017 7:17 PM
This info graphic lists many great resources that could influence ICT use in a classroom. Many of these we have explored through ICT Design, however many are new resources. This could be a great starting block for an ICT and student centered unit plan.

EDIT:
Upon reading this article, I agreed that these skills are necessary for 21st century teachers. I have re-read this article however, and now I see that these skills are just as important for 21st century students. Imagine sending students out into the workforce after school, with all of these skills. This Infographic has provided me with the inspiration for creating a learning sequence within a unit.

Within the drama classroom there is room for most of these skills. Within my unit plan, students have to prepare a performance but in addition to that, they have to market their performance. This will require posters, a promotion video, creating a website for the performance. Working collaboratively to decide what needs to be done, students then work independently on their task (decided within the group). This will give students the opportunity to excel in skills from outside of the drama classroom.
Jeff At CQU's curator insight, June 17, 2017 10:06 AM

This resource is excellent.  Highly organised, focused and very easy to read.  I think this would be a wonderful resource printed on a poster and displayed in the classroom.

Website addresses are given under nine headings that fit so well with the Australian Curriculum General Standards, the pedagogy I have chosen in my pedagogy map, and the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers..

Examples of such links are as follows:

1. Category on Chart: Create infographics and posters (4 websites listed)

      LINKS TO:

(a) Australian Curriculum General Standards

    - Literacy - communicate concepts, ideas and detailed proposals

      LINKS TO:

(b) High end pedagogy

   - Provide students opportunities to communicate ideas and detailed proposals through various self-selected ICT technologies

      LINKS TO:

(c) Links to Pedagogy

   - Student direction: Students self-select methods to communicate their proposals, reports, drawings and specifications using media channels appropriate to the intended audience. To an extent directing, setting the pace and determining outcomes of learning (problem based learning).

      LINKS TO:

(d) ICT Connections

   - Students should understand and develop the ability to utilise different presentation software – such as Prezzi and PowerPoint.

2. Category on Chart: Create PLNs, connect, discover new content and grow professionally (4 websites listed)

      LINKS TO:

(a) Australian Professional Standards for Teachers.

6.2 Engage in professional learning and improve practice

3. Category on Chart: Create, organize adn share digital resources

      LINKS TO:

(a) Australian Professional Standards for Teachers.

6.3 Engage with colleagues and improve practice

__________________________________________________________

In relation to SAMR, this allows for transformation learning in the following ways:

1. Modification: many tasks in the classroom can be re-designed with this poster being used to locate safe and appropriate resources on the internet.

An example is using a a resource under "Create Digital Portfolios" such as Weebly.com in place of a portfolio in book form.

2. Redefinition: new tasks, previously inconceivable are possible, such as displaying a student's portfolio on a mobile device as opposed to book form.

__________________________________________________________

In summary, this is brilliantly designed and I see it as a highly valuable resource for my teaching.

Three Tips for Leaving Your Classroom Island | Getting Smart | #LEARNing2LEARN #ProfessionalDevelopment | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
Next Steps For Your First Step

So how can you take the first step toward scaling your own impact as a teacher? Stepping outside of your classroom can feel difficult, but it doesn’t need to be—there are many ways to find opportunities to collaborate and grow as a professional.

Seek support from your school leadership. Ask your administrators about training opportunities and collaborative experiences. Ask about how they can help you meet your professional development needs. Perhaps you can even develop your expertise on instructional strategies and provide training to other teachers.

Talk to other teachers. Join virtual collaboration groups. Embrace Twitter as a venue through which to connect to others in the educational community. Other educators can be a wealth of information. I’ve found that the more people I meet, the more opportunities I discover.

Do your research on topics that you’re passionate about. Be willing to take a chance on yourself. Personally, I’ve been humbled to find myself working alongside teachers who are amazing educators and people. Reach for the opportunities you hope to experience.

Stepping outside of your comfortable classroom to examine yourself and how you can improve is the best way to remain engaged and grow as an educator. Don’t let fear keep you from leaving your island. Network and collaborate and you’ll become a better teacher, too.

Students Need Professional Learning Networks, Too

Learning to create, manage and promote a professional learning network (PLN) will soon become, if it’s not already, one of the most necessary and sought after skills for a global citizen, and as such, must become a prominent feature of any school curriculum.

When Teachers and Technology Let Students Be Masters of Their Own Learning | #LEARNing2LEARN #LEARNingByDoing

When Teachers and Technology Let Students Be Masters of Their Own Learning | #LEARNing2LEARN #LEARNingByDoing | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
Mastery learning is the idea that students should adequately comprehend a given concept before being expected to understand a more advanced one. This idea has a long tradition in educational theory and research. In 1919, superintendent Carleton W. Washburne in Winnetka, Illinois, showed that students could advance at their own pace if they mastered a concept before moving on to something more complicated.

Years later, building on Washburne’s work, educational psychologist Benjamin Bloom coined the term “mastery learning.” In 1984, in Bloom’s seminal study, “The 2 Sigma Problem,” he showed that mastery-based one-on-one tutoring is two standard deviations more effective than conventional instruction. (That means it would take the average for a cohort of students from the 50th percentile to the 98th percentile!). Ever since, educators have sought ways to make mastery learning available to all students.

Why Empathy Holds the Key to Transforming 21st Century Learning | #EQ #SoftSkills

Why Empathy Holds the Key to Transforming 21st Century Learning | #EQ #SoftSkills | 21st Century Learning and Teaching | Scoop.it
Like other aspects of modern life, education can make the head hurt. So many outcomes, so much important work to do, so many solutions and strategies, so many variations on teaching, so many different kinds of students with so many different needs, so many unknowns in preparing for 21st Century life and the endless list of jobs that haven’t been invented.

What if we discovered one unifying factor that brought all of this confusion under one roof and gave us a coherent sense of how to stimulate the intellect, teach children to engage in collaborative problem solving and creative challenge, and foster social-emotional balance and stability—one factor that, if we got right, would change the equation for learning in the same way that confirming the existence of a fundamental particle informs a grand theory of the universe?

That factor exists: It’s called empathy.
