Spatial Computing and the future of workplace learning

As organizations increasingly integrate spatial computing into their technology roadmaps, helping workplace learners successfully navigate the evolution from primarily physical to virtual or hybrid working environments is becoming a strategic imperative for many organizations. Understanding how early adopters are using spatial computing can assist workplace learning practitioners as they consider the integration of these technologies into their future-of-work strategies and plans.

This article describes the evolving spatial computing adoption landscape across multiple industries, sectors and business functions and provides key insights into the benefits of spatial computing capabilities to organizations. It also offers practical strategies for leaders who are considering exploring these technologies as well as those who have already begun experimentation.

[2312.11274] Improving Student Learning with Hybrid Human-AI Tutoring: A Three-Study Quasi-Experimental Investigation

[2312.11274] Improving Student Learning with Hybrid Human-AI Tutoring: A Three-Study Quasi-Experimental Investigation | Education 2.0 & 3.0 | Scoop.it
Artificial intelligence (AI) applications to support human tutoring have potential to significantly improve learning outcomes, but engagement issues persist, especially among students from low-income backgrounds. We introduce an AI-assisted tutoring model that combines human and AI tutoring and hypothesize that this synergy will have positive impacts on learning processes. To investigate this hypothesis, we conduct a three-study quasi-experiment across three urban and low-income middle schools: 1) 125 students in a Pennsylvania school; 2) 385 students (50% Latinx) in a California school; and 3) 75 students (100% Black) in a Pennsylvania charter school, all implementing analogous tutoring models. We compare learning analytics of students engaged in human-AI tutoring compared to students using math software only. We find human-AI tutoring has positive effects, particularly in student's proficiency and usage, with evidence suggesting lower achieving students may benefit more compared to higher achieving students. We illustrate the use of quasi-experimental methods adapted to the particulars of different schools and data-availability contexts so as to achieve the rapid data-driven iteration needed to guide an inspired creation into effective innovation. Future work focuses on improving the tutor dashboard and optimizing tutor-student ratios, while maintaining annual costs per students of approximately $700 annually.

AI offers a big prize if we can learn to lead others to it

AI offers a big prize if we can learn to lead others to it | Education 2.0 & 3.0 | Scoop.it

Effective AI integration involves the creation of bespoke, individual prompts or applications tailored to the unique needs of each person, task, and sometimes even the specific tool being used. This level of customization ensures that AI directly supports the goals and objectives of the school and its stakeholders. It’s not about preset libraries of prompts or generic solutions.

There are risks, of course, but AI safety is much better ensured by embedding AI literacy into the fabric of your school than by relying on an assembly or a few explicit lessons. The AI landscape is constantly shifting, so the more sustainable approach is to foster a culture of constant conversations around AI that equips students, staff and parents with the knowledge and skills necessary to make informed decisions about its use.

Rethinking online learning design to enhance the experiences of Indigenous higher education students.

Rethinking online learning design to enhance the experiences of Indigenous higher education students. | Education 2.0 & 3.0 | Scoop.it
The educational inequity that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people have experienced in higher education in Australia is replicated in virtual learning spaces, with generic models of online learning design taking little account of cultural factors that impact on learning. To counter this, new approaches to online learning design are needed that consider the experiences of Indigenous people. This article explores culture as a critical element of online learning design that enhances the learning experiences and outcomes of Indigenous people. The study reported in this article was conducted at a regional Australian university and was methodologically situated within an educational design research framework. Data were collected through the narrative method of yarning with 19 Indigenous students enrolled in a range of disciplines. From the data, 10 themes were developed, which guided the design of a learning design model and six preliminary design principles. The study contributes to the gap in the literature on learning design for Indigenous online higher education students. As the model and preliminary design principles are culturally situated at the site of the study, they need testing by educational designers and academics to ascertain their usefulness in other contexts.
