Tech Tip: Digital storytelling with Google Map tools | SmartBlogs | Scriveners' Trappings | Scoop.it
I have had students as young as first grade create Google My Maps. Lisa Highfill has a great set of video tutorials for My Maps on YouTube. Occasionally I run into Google Apps for Education domains where My Maps is not turned on, so I created a tutorial on how to turn it on. So stop looking for your house, and have your students create a digital story using Google Map tools this week. For more Google Maps resources, check the Maps page of my website TeachInteractive.org.

Writing with Light: Western Pennsylvania Writing Project Experiments with Paper Circuitry | Educator Innovator

Writing with Light: Western Pennsylvania Writing Project Experiments with Paper Circuitry | Educator Innovator | Scriveners' Trappings | Scoop.it
Educators problem-solve the complexities of introducing a new concept to students by participating in new workshops centered around STEAM and maker movement practices.

The 20 educators who signed on to participate in the Western Pennsylvania Writing Project’s 21st Century Notebooking Inquiry Project, a Grable-sponsored exploration into paper circuitry, dove straight into “doing,” trying out firsthand what they intended to teach others. The group represented various contexts: public, private, and charter, and nearby Latrobe, Hempstead and Franklin Regional districts. Paper circuitry, at its most basic, involves tinkering with copper tape, sticker LED lights, coin-shaped batteries, paper, pens, and art supplies to design and compose written texts that light up.

This group, and a larger group of invited visitors, experienced his or her own “lightbulb moment” during a July 2015 two-day workshop held at the Writing Project’s four-week Summer Institute for Teachers, which helps teachers across grade levels and disciplines strengthen their literacy practice. The paper circuitry workshop was led by San Francisco-based David Cole, of NEXMAP. NEXMAP, which stands for “New experimental music, art, production,” is a transformative educational non-profit organization that works to create innovative opportunities for teachers and students.

10 Ways I Deal With My Own Procrastination — Life Learning — Medium

10 Ways I Deal With My Own Procrastination - Life Learning - Medium
It’s important I address several things first before I really start into the meat of this article.
First, when I tweet about this post many people will respond, “I’ll read it…later” or some variation of that.
That’s a funny joke. I get it.
Second, while I was writing this post, I procrastinated pretty heavily. No surprise.
And what was even better, I employed almost all of the techniques below to get over the procrastination and still be very productive.
In fact, one of the techniques I mention below is to start in the middle.
It’s worth mentioning then that the words I am writing now I am writing after already finishing the article.
So here are the 10 things you should do to make your life more productive via procrastination.
Marisol Espinoza's curator insight, April 2, 2016 10:29 PM
This article was very funny at first because the author explains how he even procrastinated to write an article about 10 ways to deal with procrastination, it kept my interest surprisingly because I got to relate to the author. But a lot of things the author talked about is actually really helpful like for example starting in the middle which my English professor even says when it comes to essay writing because it's hard to start something, but it is easier to start things if you already have a middle and an end. Also that some projects will never be "finished" in your head. Sometimes you did the best you could and that's all you can do. This article is obviously bias because the author wrote about his own way to deal with procrastination. Some people have different ways to deal with procrastination, but I always find it helpful to read new ideas from others and see if it could work for me.

The Schoenblog: Sharing Students’ Genius: A #GeniusHour Reflection :: Adam Schoenbart | Scriveners' Trappings | Scoop.it

We’re now at the halfway mark in this year’s #GeniusHour process for my English 10 students, and things are going well. Students are blogging regularly, completing research, and developing questions for experts and surveys. Next comes the project proposal, the first major checkpoint for my students.

"Now that our topics are more concrete and the genius has begun its process, I started to share my students blogs and work. Find them at geniushour.aschoenbart.com, which I Tweet out from both my personal and school accounts, @MrSchoenbart and @SchoenTellOHS, respectively. Later this week, I want to start promoting individual blogs by tagging my students in the Tweets and sharing their topics to relevant groups and hashtags.

The New Social Network Where You Can Hang Out with Real People in Virtual Reality | Scriveners' Trappings | Scoop.it
Instead of hanging out with your friends in real life, why not spend time with them in outer space?

vTime, the first virtual reality social network, wants to make that possible. Developed by Starship Group, a VR/AR innovation company, the service launched on Google Cardboard on March 11 and the app works on the Samsung Gear VR too.

The social network lets you create a virtual avatar and interact with other 1-3 other users in 12 different virtual worlds. You can create chatrooms and invite your friends, or have the system randomly pair you with a user to talk to-called Random Match. The company told Quartz it has “tens of thousands of users in 150 countries.”

TED-ED clubs give students a platform for sharing ideas

TED-ED clubs give students a platform for sharing ideas | Scriveners' Trappings | Scoop.it

"From her years of teaching, [Mitzi] Stover knew that having students delve into their interests and personal experiences was one of the best ways to develop their passions — and in turn their public speaking. But presenting to the same classmates they saw every day was decidedly low-stakes and hardly helped her convince students they had a voice, let alone a global reach.

"That’s when she turned to TED, best known for a series of conferences centered around big ideas and engaging 15-minute presentations called TED Talks. Recently, TED has started an outreach of sorts to help mold the next generation of confident speakers, primarily through its education-focused arm — TED-ED — that features a lesson designer, original animated shorts inspired by teachers, and public speaking clubs.

"While teachers have been cribbing the TED format for years, letting students deliver fast-paced talks on big ideas, Stover took it a step further, applying to start an official TED-ED club, a process that involved an application and a live video interview. Stover has taught speaking for years, but even she came to dread the interview part with open-ended questions she couldn’t anticipate. “I try to push my students to take risks and get out there, but we teachers also have those moments of being intimidated,” she said.

"The interview went fine and Stover now runs TED-ED clubs in her two speech classes and an out-of-school club, where students meet during lunch or after school. The clubs give teachers like Stover access to a wealth of curricular materials, including 13 suggested lessons that cover everything from how to structure a talk to picking a good topic (although she can’t share lessons with colleagues unless they, too, complete the application process)."

Creating is not just a 'nice' activity; it transforms, connects and empowers

Creating is not just a 'nice' activity; it transforms, connects and empowers | Scriveners' Trappings | Scoop.it

"...when we give children the time and space to make – and present them with a pile of materials – they fall to it with such a will. The appetite to make is there, even when no one speaks of it.

"Making connects the hand, eye and brain in a very special way. It’s empowering for both maker and viewer. The act of making is optimistic; it’s an act of faith. People of all ages feel better for doing it.

"Making can also be very social – conversations can meander while hands are kept busy. But it can also be very personal and give confidence to children who listen to their own internal monologue that takes place as they make in solitude.

"If we want a world full of creative, entrepreneurial thinkers, we need to enable and sustain making from a very young age. Not all of us will become sculptors or engineers or designers, but we will become more connected, rounded and creative people."

The Boat | SBS

The Boat | SBS | Scriveners' Trappings | Scoop.it
‘The Boat’, an interactive graphic novel about escape after the Vietnam War. Based on the story by Nam Le, adapted by Matt Huynh.

Description by The Scout Project

"This compelling drama raises the graphic novel to the level of high art with vivid graphics and terse prose. Based on the story by Nam Le, adapted to the new medium by Matt Huynh, and produced by the Special Broadcasting Service (SBS), The Boat traces a group of Vietnamese refugees as they sail across the Pacific Ocean in a rickety boat, pummeled by storms, haunted by memories of war, and searching for a better life. Each chapter is accompanied by beautiful drawings, fully developed characters, and the perils and intimacies of families, friends, and strangers thrown together in desperation. Will they reach land? Will the children survive? Read this phenomenal graphic novel to find out. (One caveat: the experience requires a great deal of data. Mobile readers with slow connections may want to abstain.)"

10 Ways to Ease Depression With Only Your Pen - The Gift of Writing -

10 Ways to Ease Depression With Only Your Pen - The Gift of Writing - | Scriveners' Trappings | Scoop.it
I’d rather tell you I have it all figured out. How depression is behind me and I have all the answers sitting snugly in my back pocket. But that’s not how it goes with this ugly illness. It finds you in the cracks where you try to seek joy. And sometimes, you wonder if you’ll ever out-run it.

Depression is the secret that pervades many households—the one most hide away from in shame. I keep writing about it because as I learn how to catch up with, and hopefully outrun, this thing, I want to bring many others with me on the journey. And the fact that so many people do hide away makes me all the more determined to bring this thing into the light.

I’m not going to tell you depression can be cured with writing. I don’t believe there is just one cure—it’s a complex illness with different answers for everyone. But I can tell you that writing is a tool. It’s something that will help you stop running, if only for a little while.
Gavin Umstead's curator insight, March 27, 2016 11:12 PM
I decided reading this article on writing how is used as a tool in depression. I liked this article a lot because her motives were pure and simple. Myself having depression this article really caught my eye and for me had a lot of useful information that I can use for myself. She explains what to write about while writing for depression because and to me after trying to write for depression has been the hardest part, knowing what to write and what will be beneficial. I really appreciated how organized it was laid out being a teenage boy made is for an easier read. As well she is trying to bring this topic of depression more known because the illness specifically is more times than not, not shared often. She clearly has is a credible source to be writing on aid of depression because herself has depression.

Rayfish Footwear | Next Nature Network

Rayfish Footwear | Next Nature Network | Scriveners' Trappings | Scoop.it

"The rise and fall of Rayfish Footwear began with the launch of an online design tool that allowed customers to design their own sneaker from a genetically modified fish. The startup received lots of media attention and seemed bound for success, however, there were also critical petitions against the company’s consumptive use of animals.

"While almost ten thousand people had designed their own fish sneaker, animal rights activists broke into the company and released all the fishes in the ocean. The CEO of the company, Raymond Ong, responded with a passionate video statement, which stirred further debate on our estranged relationship with products in a globalized world.

"As Rayfish struggled finding new investors, the escaped fishes where out in the open and started appearing into video’s of tourists and fishermen. The story ended with the bankruptcy of Rayfish, after which the true objective of the company was revealed in a ‘making of video’.

In debt, out of luck: why Generation K fell in love with The Hunger Games

In debt, out of luck: why Generation K fell in love with The Hunger Games | Scriveners' Trappings | Scoop.it

"...the economist and academic Noreena Hertz, who coined the term Generation K (after Katniss) for those born between 1995 and 2002, says that this is a generation riddled with anxiety, distrustful of traditional institutions from government to marriage, and, “like their heroine Katniss Everdeen, [imbued with] a strong sense of what is right and fair”.

“I think The Hunger Games resonates with them so much because they are Katniss navigating a dark and difficult world,” says Hertz, who interviewed 2,000 teenagers from the UK and the US about their hopes, fears and beliefs, concluding that today’s teens are shaped by three factors: technology, recession and coming of age in a time of great unease.

“This is a generation who grew up through 9/11, the Madrid bombings, the London bombings and Islamic State terrors. They see danger piped down their smartphones and beheadings on their Facebook page,” she says. “My data showed very clearly how anxious they are about everything from getting into debt or not getting a job, to wider issues such as climate change and war – 79% of those who took part in my survey worried about getting a job, 72% worried about debt, and you have to remember these are teenagers.

“In previous generations teenagers did not think in this way. Unlike the first-era millennials [who Hertz classes as those aged between 20 and 30] who grew up believing that the world was their oyster and ‘Yes we can’, this new generation knows the world is an unequal and harsh place.”

Gavin Umstead's curator insight, March 28, 2016 12:55 AM
The Hunger Games has been a clear dramatization to viewers, but unfortunately its message has hit a nerve that we haven"t been able to shake. Its so different from the world we've grown into? I understood this article on a very personal level as it depicted what is called Gen K's (for Katniss) anxiety about the truths and dangers life freely offers. The article sights multiple sources ranging from activists to economists to gage opinions on the buzz behind both the series but also its greater genre of dystopian fiction. Growing up with 9/11 before my first day in kindergarten to stress about debt, the rise of fear of authority with the Black Lives Matter movement and the ISIS attacks, even mass shootings yearly have all been experiences throughout my life that have contributed the way my generation latches to the story of a girl frightened and determined enough to fight, but brave enough to lead. I really enjoyed reading the article and would recommend it to anyone seeking an understanding about my generation and the reasons behind our mannerisms and the series that embodied those ideas.
