Clinical applicability of deep learning-based respiratory signal prediction models for four-dimensional radiation therapy

Clinical applicability of deep learning-based respiratory signal prediction models for four-dimensional radiation therapy | Useful Tools, Information, & Resources For Wessels Library | Scoop.it
For accurate respiration gated radiation therapy, compensation for the beam latency of the beam control system is necessary. Therefore, we evaluate deep learning models for predicting patient respiration signals and investigate their clinical feasibility. Herein, long short-term memory (LSTM), bidirectional LSTM (Bi-LSTM), and the Transformer are evaluated. Among the 540 respiration signals, 60 signals are used as test data. Each of the remaining 480 signals was spilt into training and validation data in a 7:3 ratio. A total of 1000 ms of the signal sequence (Ts) is entered to the models, and the signal at 500 ms afterward (Pt) is predicted (standard training condition). The accuracy measures are: (1) root mean square error (RMSE) and Pearson correlation coefficient (CC), (2) accuracy dependency on Ts and Pt, (3) respiratory pattern dependency, and (4) error for 30% and 70% of the respiration gating for a 5 mm tumor motion for latencies of 300, 500, and 700 ms. Under standard conditions, the Transformer model exhibits the highest accuracy with an RMSE and CC of 0.1554 and 0.9768, respectively. An increase in Ts improves accuracy, whereas an increase in Pt decreases accuracy. An evaluation of the regularity of the respiratory signals reveals that the lowest predictive accuracy is achieved with irregular amplitude patterns. For 30% and 70% of the phases, the average error of the three models is <1.4 mm for a latency of 500 ms and >2.0 mm for a latency of 700 ms. The prediction accuracy of the Transformer is superior to LSTM and Bi-LSTM. Thus, the three models have clinically applicable accuracies for a latency <500 ms for 10 mm of regular tumor motion. The clinical acceptability of the deep learning models depends on the inherent latency and the strategy for reducing the irregularity of respiration.

Fight Censorship! Updated Resources from the Office for Intellectual Freedom | beSpacific | Useful Tools, Information, & Resources For Wessels Library | Scoop.it
The Office for Intellectual Freedom of the American Library Association: “Book challenges have been a hot topic in news and politics lately. The American Library Association (ALA) Executive Board and eight divisions recently released a statement affirming its opposition to widespread efforts to censor books in U.S. Schools. OIF has tracked 155 unique censorship incidents between June 1, 2021 and September 30, 2021. With the high volume of challenges right now, OIF has made available a clearinghouse of resources on its Fight Censorship page. The page is organized by different aspects of addressing censorship. First are resources for preparing and responding to challenges. This involves looping in ALA so that they can draw attention to the harms of censorship in addition to helping protect against challenges before they happen. For example, pertinent to recent censorship attempts there is a guide from the American Association of School Librarians (AASL) on maintain LGBTQ+ materials in school libraries. There are also resources on the rights of schools and students/minors, in addition to general guidelines on how to respond to challenges and concerns about resources. This includes suggested responses to informal complaints and verbal concerns. One of the biggest factors in fighting censorship is one’s community. There are various resources on working with the public. These include how to respond to questions about youth and access to library resources, tips for addressing challenges during a public meeting, and working with community leaders. The number of people that belong to a said community is increasing, mainly due to social media’s ability to further connect people. Fortunately, there is a guide on using social media, which includes toolkits for creating live streams and advocating via social media….”

Content Curation and the Future of Campus Bookstores by Daniel W. Rasmus

Content Curation and the Future of Campus Bookstores by Daniel W. Rasmus | Useful Tools, Information, & Resources For Wessels Library | Scoop.it

Robin Good: Daniel W. Rasmus has an interesting article on his blog entitled: "The Future of Campus Stores: Good-Bye Books, Hello Learning". In it he analyzes the key elements that will help such campus stores maintain their relevancy while traditional textbooks are rapidly loosing thir foothold inside academic campuses.

He writes: "College bookstores face an existential crisis with the looming demise of physical book sales as digital technology rapidly becomes an option for learners.

At the same time free content, via websites like the Kahn Academy, or through more proprietary means, like Apple’s iTunes University (now iTunes U).

And then there is the rise of open sourced content available places like the Open Education Resources Commons (OER).

So what should college stores consider as the elements that will help make them relevant as their core mission apparently shifts?"

And one of the key elements that he sees potentially providing new

meaning and relevance to campus bookstores, as a knowledge service, is content curation.

"One specific instance of high-quality, knowledge-based service is content curation.

As the content world becomes more complex, the college store can offer value added resources to faculty and students to help them understand the options they have, and the relative value of different sources of information and approaches to the delivery of that information.

Think about content now as software. The educator can write a specification or requirements document and the store team, like programmers, can assemble a solution for the educator that meets his or her specification. Like programmers, the language or technique doesn’t matter to the solution recipient, what matters is that the software meets the requirements and delivers its expected value."

38 Community Colleges Launch Entire Degree Programs With Open Educational Resources (EdSurge News)

38 Community Colleges Launch Entire Degree Programs With Open Educational Resources (EdSurge News) | Useful Tools, Information, & Resources For Wessels Library | Scoop.it
The sticker shock of college textbooks—up 73 percent over the past decade—is daunting to any student. But the strain on wallets is especially acute among low-income, minority students. So much so that textbook costs often stand between them and graduation: Students who don’t complete college are over 50 percent more likely than those who graduate to cite textbook costs as a major financial barrier, according to research firm Public Agenda.

Today national community college reform network Achieving the Dream announced an initiative to remove some of the financial burdens that traditional educational resources place on students. Over the next three years, 38 community colleges in 13 states will build entire degree programs around open educational resources (OER). The goal of the “OER Degree Initiative” is not only to reduce financial burdens on students, but also to encourage faculty to teach in more engaging ways that encourage students to more actively participate in the use of OER.

Today's Newsletter: Where to Find & Curate OER Resources | Useful Tools, Information, & Resources For Wessels Library | Scoop.it
Guest post by Steve Baule, Educational Leadership Professor at the University of Wisconsin – Superior: As the school year begins, one of the struggles many teachers have is finding good repositories of Open Education Resources (OER). The two biggest challenges to using OER sources seem to be finding them and having the time to curate those appropriate for one’s courses. The OER Commons is a core site with resources from pre-school through adult education. MERLOT is a search engine for finding curated OER resources. It provides some curation tools as well as resources. The Orange Grove is the Florida’s OER Depository. Ck12.org provides a find range of student support resources. Opened.com is a resource site that includes a wide range of assessment materials they cover all areas, but seem to have a wealth of math materials for all levels of students. College Open Textbooks is a great site for those looking to support dual credit or Advanced Placement courses. Additionally, College Open Textbooks includes a link to the OER Handbook for Educators 1.0, which is a good primer for those still learning about how to use OER sources. As the new school year starts, ensure your teachers have the resources to be successful in using OER sources. Happy New (School) Year!

Useful Free Online Tools for Students | SayCampusLife: Campus News, Sports and Events

Useful Free Online Tools for Students | SayCampusLife: Campus News, Sports and Events | Useful Tools, Information, & Resources For Wessels Library | Scoop.it
This post will look at some free online tools that every student should know about. It looks at resources that the student can rely on for research, and also those resources that he or she should never use or quote from.

PROGRESS EQUALS CHANGE

Our schools core curriculums might still be the same as they were ten years ago, but the way they are taught keeps progressing. Technology has played a key role in this. We have college and high school classes that are taught partially or entirely online, and we can watch lecturers without being there in person via livestream.

KEEPING UP WITH TECHNOLOGY

Statistics show that more than 80% of high schools are online, while colleges exceed 80%. This means that course work, timetables and assignments are often posted and submitted online. Being tech savvy and being connected to the right online resources are now requirements for a student to maintain above average scores.

ONLINE RESOURCES FOR STUDENTS TO AVOID

It is important to note that while Google and Wikipedia are a wealth of information, they are not credible sources when it comes to scholarly materials. This is because for Wikipedia, the content can be altered by virtually anyone despite their credentials, and with Google, one is given virtually any information so long as it is most viewed or searched for.

YouTube is also not a platform to use when looking for educational information unless one is pursuing a fashion design or art class where erroneous information and mistakes are encouraged and seen as part of the learning curve. One can instead use Google scholar where all articles and journals are peer reviewed.

This means that any information you get has been proofread by other professionals and hence can be deemed credible.

FREE ONLINE TOOLS FOR WRITING

Most writing interfaces such as Microsoft word and notepad have an inbuilt spell check capability. This is important, as there is nothing worse than an essay riddled with grammatical errors and wrongly spelt words.

One can also have access to online dictionaries to ensure proper usage of vocabulary, especially since most inbuilt dictionaries (such as thesaurus) have limited words. One of the most reliable online dictionaries, the Oxford dictionary, can be accessed from its homepage. This free online tool will help the student understand words better and use them in the correct context.

It is important for a student to have an online translator, especially since it is almost a requirement to be proficient in more than two languages. One should be able to use the online translators to complete foreign language assignments.

The plagiarism checker is another free tool that can be accessed online. This is an important online tool, as it checks the authenticity of any written essay and helps the writer put citations where he or she might have forgotten.

Coming up with a thesis or an essay title is the hardest, but most essential part of any essay a student may be required to write. There is a free online resource known as the essay generator http://essaytopicgenerator.com. What it does can be deduced from the title, but its efficacy far exceeds expectations.

The good thing is one does not need to download it or feed registration details into the system to access it. All one has to do is provide the keywords that he thinks should be in his title, choose the topic type and subject area and the tool will do the rest. The topic type and subject area are selected from a preset list.

I believe that the essay generator tool will be to students what the wheel is to engineers, as it helps with the most crucial part of any students work: the generation of a field and title to work on. Once this is accomplished, the rest of the pieces automatically fall in place.

OTHER ONLINE TOOLS FOR STUDENTS

Many other free online tools such as Twiddla and Scribblar are accessible to students. These two tools encourage online group work and information sharing. It is, however, very important to note that the student still has to use his or her discretion to choose what to research, what to use or not use and what to consider as useful information.

Can Open Educational Resources foster equity in Higher Education?

Can Open Educational Resources foster equity in Higher Education? | Useful Tools, Information, & Resources For Wessels Library | Scoop.it

When discussing a student’s ability to achieve an undergraduate degree, the topic of textbooks has increasingly come to the fore. While less significant than tuition, room, or board, textbooks and other learning materials represent an increasingly significant cost for any undergraduate student. As a solution, many educators, organizations, and some companies have proposed Open Educational Resources (OER). While OER has often been viewed as a means to make college more affordable, few have drilled deeper into the issue. A recent study, however, proposes that OER can address issues of equity in higher education by making a bigger difference in college affordability for some communities who tend to be underrepresented on campus.
