Matt Bergman has shared a new online search engine, Twurdy, that can support students with different readability levels.

Imagine the ability to search according to readability level! Matt has made comments in his blog on the Twurdy features that can make a difference:

"Simply type in a term and it will generate a list of different options for you. The list is color coded according to its readability level (easy to hard). Each item has a number that is generated to show its readability level. There is also a feature that allows you to show approximate ages that the articles are intended for."

Version 2-Stages of Personalized Learning Environments | Bray & McClaskey

Version 2-Stages of Personalized Learning Environments | Bray & McClaskey | UDL - Universal Design for Learning | Scoop.it

The Stages of Personalized Learning Environments (PLE) Version One chart needed to be updated. Why? Because of the considerable feedback we received after posting our first version of the chart. Some of the feedback was about consistency and flow across the stages. What worked in what stage?

We definitely want to thank those that critiqued the stages for us and helped us with this version two. Some districts shared with us that our version one was going to be their foundation of their personalized learning initiative. We wanted to refine it so it was clear, consistent, and easily understood. We went to work to update the stages for them and anyone else moving to a personalized learning environment.

Please feel free to download version two and let us know how it supports your transformation to personalizing learning.

UDL: Meeting the Needs of All Students

UDL: Meeting the Needs of All Students | UDL - Universal Design for Learning | Scoop.it
Patti Ralabate, Director of the UDL Center, provides an excellent overview of UDL, UDL in action and case studies that offer an in depth look in how to apply the UDL principles to support student learning.

Applying UDL within a classroom or for a caseload of students starts with three initial steps: define appropriate goals that allow for multiple means of attainment, assess diverse learner needs, and evaluate barriers that may exist within the current curriculum.

Meeting all students' needs:

The UDL framework provides a flexible, responsive curriculum that reduces or eliminates barriers to learning. Using a UDL approach, SLPs and other educators offer curriculum options that present information and content in varied ways, differentiate the manner in which learners can express what they know, and engage students in meaningful, authentic learning. With UDL, more students are:

> Engaged in their own education.

> Learning in greater breadth and depth.

> Achieving at higher levels.

> Motivated to continue learning.

The 2Include Me site provides both the pedagogy and technology resources that fosters the use of tools to support all learners.  The have also published a resource on how UDL and DI overlap.  Here is their perspective:

"Universal Design for Learning [UDL] and Differentiated Instruction are principles which impart a foundation for effective implementation of technology in the classroom, whether it be the use of online resources, web 2.0 tools, specific software or classroom technologies.

"The principles of UDL overlap with and complement the approach of differentiated education. Much of the application of UDL principles relies on the use of technology to make learning resources and environments more flexible. Within this combined approach, the classroom is inclusive by design."

Universal Design for Learning - Improved Access for All

Universal Design for Learning - Improved Access for All | UDL - Universal Design for Learning | Scoop.it

Nancy Firchow writes an informative article on UDL for parents.  Here are just a few excerpts of this wonderful article:

"In the future, the adaptations may be built into the curriculum materials, thanks to Universal Design for Learning* (UDL). UDL uses computer technology to create an educational environment that allows all students, including those with learning disabilities, to succeed in general education classrooms with minimal use of assistive technology (AT).

UDL embraces the concept of improved access for everyone and applies it to curriculum materials and teaching methods. Rather than rely on AT to bridge the gap between the material and the student's learning needs, materials designed using UDL concepts have built-in accommodations. Add-on technology is less often needed to translate the material into a mode that enables learning."

UDL Guides Personalizing Learning to Meet the Common Core

UDL Guides Personalizing Learning to Meet the Common Core | UDL - Universal Design for Learning | Scoop.it

Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is used to design curriculum, lessons and instruction based on the diversity of the learners in their classroom.

How can UDL guide personalize learning to meet the Common Core?

When a teacher understands his/her learners through the UDL lens, he/she creates a flexible learning environment and provides opportunities for learner voice and choice. When lessons are designed using the UDL model, the lesson includes goals, methods, materials, tools, and assessments to reach and support the maximum amount of learners in the classroom.

Learners can use this model to help them understand how they learn best and what learning path they can take to become an independent expert learner, leveraging their natural abilities in the process. This process helps the learner create their personal learning profile that is understood by both teacher and learner.

The importance of this strategy is that both the teacher and the learner understand who the learner is and how they learn best. The learner and the teacher uses the UDL lens to personalize learning. So what does that look like?

An example of an 8th Grade unit on the Civil War serves as an example along with two students who can meet a number of CCSS when they choose and use the tools to support their learning.

Explore our new website, Personalize Learning (www.personalizelearning.com), to learn more about the research, models and educators who are personalizing learning.

UDL and The Flipped Classroom: The Full Picture

UDL and The Flipped Classroom: The Full Picture | UDL - Universal Design for Learning | Scoop.it

Jackie Gerstein proposes an experiential flipped classroom learning model where she believes there a  great opportunity to change the predominant didactic model of education that is especially prevalent in upper elementary through graduate school education.

"UDL is a strategy, a process that provides opportunities for all students, not just those with special needs (but I believe all learners have special needs), to be successful learners. This is the same goal for the flipped classroom model designed as an experiential learning cycle.

This model has experiential learning at the core of the learning process with the content videos supporting the learning rather than being the core or primary instructional piece. Experiential learning is the process of making meaning from direct experience.. Simply put, experiential learning is learning from experience. Experiential learning can be a highly effective educational method[ It engages the learner at a more personal level by addressing the needs and wants of the individual. For experiential learning to be truly effective, it should employ the whole learning wheel, from goal setting, to experimenting and observing, to reviewing, and finally action planning. This complete process allows one to learn new skills, new attitudes or even entirely new ways of thinking. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Experiential_learning)"

Thank you Jackie for your insight in creating this model where all learners can experience success!

UDL and Common Core FAQ's - For ALL Learners

UDL and Common Core FAQ's - For ALL Learners | UDL - Universal Design for Learning | Scoop.it

Is UDL included in the Common Core?

"UDL is included in the section of the Common Core Standards called “application to students with disabilities”.  In this section the authors referred to the definition laid out in the Higher Education Opportunity Act of 2008 (PL 110-135).   The reference to UDL in this section may give the impression that UDL is just for students with disabilities. However, UDL not only applies to students with disabilities, it applies to all other learners as well.  All students can benefit from the types of instruction used to reach learners “on the margins,” as the learning needs of all individuals vary a great deal.  As such, UDL should be used within inclusive general education classrooms."

What Aligns with UDL?

"There are many ways in which the Common Core Standards align to the UDL framework. Curricula (goals, methods, materials, and assessments) designed using UDL put an emphasis on creating effective, flexible goals, and the Common Core Standards provide an important framework for thinking about what goals will be most effective."

Study Tracks Growing Understanding of UDL | UDL - Universal Design for Learning | Scoop.it

A report just released, “Universal Design for Learning: Initiatives on the Move,” for the first time looks at how UDL is being implemented and understood.

"The new study finds that that many states and districts have embraced UDL’s tenets, which call for students to be presented with information and content in different ways and for giving them multiple options to show their understanding of what they know.  The instructional approach is intended to help all students, not just those with disabilities."

Preparing for a Different Kind of Middle Grades Classroom with UDL

Preparing for a Different Kind of Middle Grades Classroom with UDL | UDL - Universal Design for Learning | Scoop.it

"As we prepare for the Common Core State Standards to be implemented in states across the country, the information from literature and developers urges us to prepare for a "different kind of classroom."

Descriptions of this next generation of classroom paint pictures of places where self-directed learning, student choice, and engagement built around enduring understanding are paramount. The Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is currently being applied to both the development and assessment of Common Core State Standards to measure student achievement. UDL, with origins in the neurosciences, prescribes flexible approaches to learning that are adjusted to meet the individual needs of students."

Interactives - A "UDL-Friendly" Site

Interactives - A "UDL-Friendly" Site | UDL - Universal Design for Learning | Scoop.it

Matt Bergman introduces Interactives and why this is a "UDL-Friendly" site.

"When we represent materials in different ways, our student's brains make a "connection" with material. This is why visual learners find it so effective to watch video clips. They may connect with a video example during or after instruction to make connections with material.  The idea is to stimulate different parts of the brain so that our students make a connection with material.

A great tool for this could be Interactives, a website that is devoted to provide educators and students with "strategies, content, and activities that can enhance and improve students' skills in a variety of curriculum areas."  This site provides a variety of activities that could provide different ways of representing material, which in turn, would stimulate the learning process."
