A year of inspired insights #4: How teaching Spanish a deaf multilingual student opened my eyes
It was two days before the semester began. I was sitting in my office preparing for class when the phone rang. I looked at the call display and saw that it was the department head calling me.

“Hello?” I answered.

“Hi, Sarah. I just wanted to give you the head’s up that you have a student with a disability in your class this semester.”

Feds: Hospital violated ADA in treating deaf patient

The U.S. Justice Department has reached a settlement with the Henry Ford Health System to ensure effective communication with individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing and need medical services.

The agreement resolves a 2004 complaint filed by a patient who alleged violations of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) at one of the health system’s psychiatric facilities — Kingswood Hospital, 10300 Eight Mile Road, Royal Oak Township.

A federal investigation revealed the health system failed to provide sign language interpreters to a deaf patient at the in-patient psychiatric facility and to his family members who are also deaf and need interpreters to communicate effectively with health care providers.

American Press - School Board changes job title of interpreters

The Calcasieu Parish School Board on Tuesday changed the job title of interpreters for the hearing impaired to better reflect their job description.
Previously, staff members who served as interpreters were recognized as paraprofessionals in the school district. Now they will be recognized as interpreters.
“They are asking to be classified in the right job description,” board member Billy Breaux said. “It corrects a wrong that has been going on for a while.”
The state already differentiates between interpreters and paraprofessionals, and proponents of the motion said openings in the position would be difficult to advertise if it did not have a clear title.
Diohn Landry, a district interpreter who spoke in favor of the change, said that without this distinction the district would only be able to hire less qualified interpreters.
“Deaf and hard-of-hearing students are held to the same standard as any hearing student,” Landry said. “Without qualified interpreters that would be hard to achieve.”

BuaNews Online homepage

Cape Town - The National Institute for the Deaf (NID) has called for sign language to be recognised as one of the official languages in South Africa.

Sign language is said to be the fifth most used language in the country. More people use it compared to those who speak languages such as SiSwati, IsiNdebele and TshiVhenda.

The NID said that about four million South Africans had hearing difficulty, while 1.5 million were "profoundly deaf", with 93 percent of the deaf being unemployed.

This was revealed on Tuesday during public hearings on the South African Language Bill hosted by Parliament's Portfolio Committee on Arts and Culture.

Uganda: What It Means to Be a Deaf Couple

...like any other married couple, once in a while, we may have misunderstandings here and there but unlike you other people who shout for the whole world to hear, we argue using sign language. It may get violent and tense but with my hot temper, which I am told is natural with deaf people, we give each other reasonable distance to let our emotions settle.

Sign language lady actually stuck inside TV | NewsBiscuit

The BBC have admitted that the lady who does the sign language for deaf children on cBeebies was actually trapped in the corner of the screen and has been frantically waving all this time to try and attract attention.

‘It was horrible,’ said Susan Waterford. ‘I don’t know how to sign or anything so I just waved my arms around randomly, hoping someone would notice – pulling strange faces occassionally and nodding to the outside of the TV set where I wanted to be.’

Glass students take on 'Children of a Lesser God'

E.C. Glass Theatre's production of 'Children of a Lesser God' will use 'shadow interpreting' and the skills of a hearing-impaired student in the lead role to bring the challenging play to the stage this week.

...

He lost his hearing when he was 2 years old and spent some of his adolescent years at a residential school for the deaf, despite the fact that he could hear with the help of a hearing aid.

“There are a lot of scenes in the play that remind me of my life,” he said. “I felt very disconnected from my mother (as a child) because neither one of my parents really made the effort to learn sign language. My mother was never exposed to the deaf community, and she didn’t know what was best for me.”

He began working as an interpreter about 10 years ago

“I like the language,” he said. “I want to use what I’ve learned. … I feel like I can be a bridge between the hearing community and the deaf community.”

4: "Children of a Lesser God" is a play about deaf individuals finding connection through the art of language. Seeing how learning a new skill for the production of this, as well as the benefits of going into a role as an outsider and not knowing this sort of situation, could be interesting to look at when speaking about imagination.
