American Press - School Board changes job title of interpreters | Metaglossia: The Translation World | Scoop.it

The Calcasieu Parish School Board on Tuesday changed the job title of interpreters for the hearing impaired to better reflect their job description.
Previously, staff members who served as interpreters were recognized as paraprofessionals in the school district. Now they will be recognized as interpreters.
“They are asking to be classified in the right job description,” board member Billy Breaux said. “It corrects a wrong that has been going on for a while.”
The state already differentiates between interpreters and paraprofessionals, and proponents of the motion said openings in the position would be difficult to advertise if it did not have a clear title.
Diohn Landry, a district interpreter who spoke in favor of the change, said that without this distinction the district would only be able to hire less qualified interpreters.
“Deaf and hard-of-hearing students are held to the same standard as any hearing student,” Landry said. “Without qualified interpreters that would be hard to achieve.”
