The U.S. Justice Department has reached a settlement with the Henry Ford Health System to ensure effective communication with individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing and need medical services.

The agreement resolves a 2004 complaint filed by a patient who alleged violations of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) at one of the health system’s psychiatric facilities — Kingswood Hospital, 10300 Eight Mile Road, Royal Oak Township.

A federal investigation revealed the health system failed to provide sign language interpreters to a deaf patient at the in-patient psychiatric facility and to his family members who are also deaf and need interpreters to communicate effectively with health care providers.
