E.C. Glass Theatre's production of 'Children of a Lesser God' will use 'shadow interpreting' and the skills of a hearing-impaired student in the lead role to bring the challenging play to the stage this week.

He lost his hearing when he was 2 years old and spent some of his adolescent years at a residential school for the deaf, despite the fact that he could hear with the help of a hearing aid.

“There are a lot of scenes in the play that remind me of my life,” he said. “I felt very disconnected from my mother (as a child) because neither one of my parents really made the effort to learn sign language. My mother was never exposed to the deaf community, and she didn’t know what was best for me.”

He began working as an interpreter about 10 years ago

“I like the language,” he said. “I want to use what I’ve learned. … I feel like I can be a bridge between the hearing community and the deaf community.”
