Taos poet nets NM Book Award

To prepare for writing her poems, Golos said she studied the structure of Arab poetry in translation. Her poems mimic some of the forms and juxtaposition of imagery she found commonly used in Arab poetry. She wrote the poems appearing in "Vocabulary of Silence" over a two-year period.

El arte de traducir poesía

En la última novela de Liliana Heker, La muerte de Dios (noviembre, 2011), la protagonista manifiesta su odio por los diccionarios porque "siempre definen algo distinto de lo que las palabras quieren decir". Y a continuación agrega una exclamación maravillosa: "¡Las palabras quieren decir!" O sea que al significado se le agrega un ímpetu. Algo así como las ganas de ser pronunciadas. De allí que traducir no sea un simple traslado de una significación; implica a su vez la posibilidad de captar el balbuceo de la lengua. Con la poesía, esta tarea se intensifica. Y a veces hay que trabajar en voz alta para hallar la palabra escrita.

New Era Opens on Dietrich Bonhoeffer

The International Bonhoeffer Society and Fortress Press earlier this month (Nov. 13-15) marked the upcoming completion of the translations of the entire Dietrich Bonhoeffer corpus into English, with a celebration and conference at Union Theological Seminary in New York City. The conference, "Bonhoeffer for Coming Generations," coincided with the release in English of Theological Education Underground: 1937-1940, volume 15 of the Dietrich Bonhoeffer Works.

Amuch-discussed fact in the publishing world is the following statistic: only about 3 percent of all books published annually in the U.S. are works translated from another language. The stats for literary fiction and poetry are even more dismal, at 0.7 percent. So if you are an excellent writer writing in Danish or Polish or Chinese, a writer with good reviews, even a faithful following of readers, your work may never see the light of day in English.
