John Benjamins - Why Translation Studies matters A pragmatist’s viewpoint

Translation Studies is challenged by Translation practitioners because of its alleged irrelevance and ineffectiveness. While it is difficult to quantify its ‘scientific’ contribution, it offers a non-negligible amount of research into relevant topics and has definitely influenced Translator training. Moreover, as an academic activity, it offers a social contribution to the Translators’ community by helping it raise its status and by facilitating the exchange of experience and information, all of this at a low cost for society.

Poetic translator a rare talent who shone like the sun

CHRISTOPHER Logue, a poet of dazzling skill and dramatic bite, who was also through his piecemeal versions of Homer the greatest poetic translator of the postwar period, has died in London. He was 85.
Born in Portsmouth to middle-aged parents, his voice for all its actorishness retained a piratical edge. He was educated, for a while, at the local Catholic college, St Johns, Southsea, and found himself in the latter part of World War II in the Black Watch regiment, where he lost an eye in an accident.

"I don't want an interpreter (in the changing room)," he said, switching back to his first language, Spanish.

"The players understand my English, although some can't. But football is a common language.

"I don't want an interpreter because he might not correctly translate what I'm saying or won't understand the language of football."

And don't just take my word for it, foreign languages online have experienced a huge surge -- between 2000 and 2008, Arabic alone grew a whopping 2,064 percent. In comparison, English usage grew by just 204 percent.
