How using AI translation tools for minority languages can boost subscriptions

An AI translation tool, able to translate news content into a minority language, has proven successful for a media outlet in Greenland. This case could now inspire others to do the same

Sermitsiaq, Greenland’s largest news publisher, always published its content in both Danish and Kalaallisut – the Greenlandic – as all communication, including news, has to be, by law, in both languages. 

Translations used to be made by humans, as automatic translation systems into this minority language did not exist. This situation was causing delays in the publication of translated articles, but it was also expensive and time-consuming for the outlet. But all that was before AI.

In 2023, the Danish tech startup MediaCatch developed an AI translation tool for Sermitsiaq, which is able to quickly translate news content into a minority language ignored by most big tech companies. The AI tool was trained on more than 15 years’ work of newspaper content translated by professionals. 

 

Since then, Sermitsiaq developed a subscription strategy to allow its readers to buy a subscription bundle that includes access to this AI translator – an effective strategy, as the entire society operates in two languages. 

The Fix spoke with Lars Damgaard Nielsen, CEO and co-founder of MediaCatch.

How did it all begin?

Everything started with a conversation with Greenland’s largest news publisher. The chairman of the board said they had this challenge of not being able to translate between Danish to Greenlandic and Greenlandic to Danish. We heard about this challenge and understood that big tech companies couldn’t solve it because it was a very small language, so the interest for them was not that high. 

How did you develop this translation tool to meet their challenge?

They were sitting on a gold mine of training data because they already had spent hours having human translators translating between Danish and Greenlandic for a lot of articles during the last 10-15 years because they are publishing content in two languages.

So what we did then was that we took all the data from them and created an algorithm that could translate between the two languages. It’s been in collaboration with them, so they actually own the algorithm. 

During the first tests, did you make sure that the translations made by the AI ​​were correct?

Yes, we had human evaluators. For each model we made, we evaluated the model against ChatGPT, the official translation tool from Greenlandic, and another tool. We had human evaluators scoring the translations blindly, so they didn’t know where they came from. They were scoring each sentence if it was good or bad or very good. 

In the end, we created around 80% good sentences, versus ChatGPT, which created 20% good sentences. Of course, when you create, it’s like with every other type of translation, you need to have a human in the loop if you’re not going to make some kind of mistakes.

What are the advantages of using this AI tool?

They are now able to translate articles for themselves within minutes instead of hours, so they have a very quick turnaround. For the media, when you’re doing breaking news, it’s not nice to wait around three hours to get something translated. 

Before, it took a lot of hours to translate a full article between two languages, and now they can have a Greenlandic-speaking journalist who can just proofread the translation. So it’s all translated, so they just have to correct minor details.

In their case, they also developed a strategy based on subscriptions, including this translation tool?

I think that’s the beauty of this story. It helps the society and the media outlets making money to make more independent journalism. So it’s fuelling the democracy of Greenland while helping them make a more sustainable business in a small country. 

The other good thing with this case is that instead of just giving their valuable training data away from the media to, let’s say, Microsoft or Google, they can now themselves make money out of it. They have created a business case on top of that. 

So, if you are a business in Greenland and you would like to have access to this tool, you have to have a business subscription to the newspaper. So, they are funding journalism with their own historic data.

For minority languages, is there also the challenge of converting the writings into audio?

Absolutely. That speech-to-text is something we are used to, being able to speak to Google Home or iPhone or something like that. But in all the small languages, you cannot speak in your own language. You have to choose English or a bigger language.

But we haven’t been able to find the funding to create a project for speech-to-text in Greenlandic. It requires a lot of training material to do that. So you cannot just scrape yourself out of it with a lot of the written things. 

Could this model be replicated elsewhere?

Yes, you can do it for many languages. The only thing it needs is basically training data. And in this case, they already had the training data because they translated between the two languages for many years. So it’s only a question about training data, a lot, basically. 

Some of it will be fixed by major big tech companies, but I also think that there’s a lot of very small niche languages like the Greenlandic one, where it’s only 50,000 people who are speaking it, writing it or reading it. And you cannot make big tech companies spend hundreds and thousands of euros just fine-tuning that small language. 

Since then, have you received other requests of this type for translations of small languages?

We haven’t created any more language models. It’s difficult to find a business proposition for making it work really well.

Translator Angela Rodel, winner of the prestigious "Booker" prize for the translation of the novel "Vremeubejište" by Georgi Gospodinov, shared in an interview for the show "This Saturday" on bTV that there are still Bulgarian expressions that cause her difficulties when translating into English.

"I can't say categorically which is my favorite Bulgarian word. There are more words from Bulgarian for which I haven't come up with a good translation. For example, the sentence, which is actually from Turkish - „Ay, siktir!". Well, there's no way you can translate it into English and have it be effective. But I keep working," Rodel shared on bTV.

The American from Minneapolis speaks Bulgarian so fluently that she sounds almost like a native, which impresses the viewers of the show. In 2023, she received the international recognition of the "Booker" for her translation of the novel "Time Shelter", with which she put Bulgarian literature on the world map.

During the interview, Rodel also revealed her approach to translating complex literary works. "In my opinion, the reader should have the same emotional experience that a Bulgarian reading the book will feel. This can come from the sonority of the words, the rhythm. There are people who don't have that sonority, but they have some games, references – historical and cultural", explained the translator.

Rodel, who, in addition to being a translator, is also a musician, ethnomusicologist and actress, emphasized that each author represents a unique challenge for the translator with their own specific style and approach to language.

Leveraging translation in uniting countries

The translation of culture-specific Chinese terms has long been a challenge for experts, with culinary terms being among the most difficult.

 

On April 29, CNN published a feature titled “Husband-and-wife lung slices? Why translating Chinese food names into English is ‘an impossible task.’” The article explored the complexities of Chinese-to-English translation.

 

For more than two decades, the English translation of culture-specific Chinese terms has been a focus of my research, and I have published extensively on the topic. CNN’s report aligns with my long standing view: Transliteration should be the primary approach for Chinese dish names, supplemented by semantic translation. Among semantic strategies, literal translation — rendering the original verbatim — is the most commendable.

 

Borrowing has been the most common method of translation. It has two main forms: loanword and transliteration. If the source and target languages share the same script, loanword is used — for example, English “espresso” from Italian espresso. If the scripts differ, transliteration is used — such as English “jiaozi” from Chinese jiaozi (餃子).

 

Semantic translation conveys meaning rather than form. It prioritizes fluency and naturalness, often departing from the original wording — for example, translating shizitou (獅子頭) as “meatball.” However, a literal translation could also be used, even if the result seems puzzling — such as translating shizitou as “lion’s head.”

 

In the past, overly literal translations were criticized as linguistically inept. Today, such translations are increasingly valued for preserving the original cultural context and thought patterns. Their awkwardness can even carry charm, sparking curiosity and engagement. The English idiom “armed to the teeth” was translated into Chinese as wuzhuang dao yachi (武裝到牙齒) — a phrasing that gained popularity for its vivid imagery. Literal translations might seem unsophisticated, but they enrich the target language and culture, whereas overly polished translations risk erasing distinct flavors.

 

Translating fuqi feipian (夫妻肺片) as “husband-and-wife lung slices,” yuxiang qiezi (魚香茄子) as “fish-fragrant eggplant” and fotiaoqiang (佛跳牆) as “Buddha jumping over the wall” might initially baffle English speakers, but could ultimately foster appreciation. Through that, the cultural depth of Chinese cuisine might gradually enter the global consciousness, broadening linguistic and cultural horizons of the English language.

 

University of Hong Kong professor Isaac Yue (余文章) and British food writer Fuchsia Dunlop said that Chinese dishes are difficult, if not impossible, to translate due to China’s rich and layered culinary history imagery and ingredients or techniques with no English equivalents.

 

Dunlop suggested borrowing directly from Chinese through transliteration, or using the Latin alphabet for Chinese terms.

 

The correspondent echoed the experts’ view that translation is not merely a tool for surface-level communication. It also subtly shapes cultures and fosters mutual understanding. If we assume that transliteration or literal translation would confuse audiences, we underestimate the transformative power of translation. Opting only for idiomatic, instantly comprehensible translations might facilitate communication, but forfeits the chance to showcase cultural richness.

 

Rather than retreating into an information cocoon, we should embrace the chance to share our profound culinary heritage. With growing cultural confidence, why not leverage translation to project cultural influence, engage the English-speaking world and deepen cross-cultural understanding?

Not everything is lost in translation – sometimes, entire worlds are found. This is especially true of Indian literature, which both Indians and the world have discovered, all thanks to translations. This was also acknowledged in the International Booker Prize, which was awarded to two Indian women this year. Writer Banu Mushtaq and translator Deepa Bhasthi won the award for their collection of short stories, Heart Lamp.

"These beautiful, busy, life-affirming stories rise from Kannada, interspersed with the extraordinary socio-political richness of other languages and dialects," said Max Porter, Chair of the 2025 committee, announcing the prestigious award.

 

This is the second International Booker in three years for an Indian author – a testament to the variety and power of Indian literature. In 2022, it was the translation of Ret Samadhi that won Geetanjali Shree the award.

The English translation of Ret Samadhi – Tomb of Sand – by Daisy Rockwell introduced both non-Hindi readers in India and the world to Geetanjali Shree's work. Tomb of Sand was published in Britain in 2021. Since winning the award, it has sold 30,000 copies in Britain and 20,000 reprints in India.

 

Such is the importance of translation that the International Booker Prize, formerly known as the Man Booker International Prize, has been instituted for works translated into English.

The work of translation is intricate. What seems like a verbatim translation of written words is a larger conversation with the original text and the realisation of how to best convey the context, the people and their sentiments to a reader, for whom those concepts might be absolutely alien.

 

Come to think of it, there wouldn't be any world literature without translation.

 

Much of what we consider world literature today — Leo Tolstoy, Fyodor Dostoevsky, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Haruki Murakami, Orhan Pamuk — was made accessible only through translation. It is through this invisible art that languages speak to each other, and the world listens.

 

It was Ralph Manheim, a great translator of the works of writers Bertolt Brecht and Hermann Hesse, who once said, "Translators are like actors who speak the lines as the author would if the author could speak English."

 

The latest Nobel Prize for Literature was awarded to South Korean writer Han Kang after her works were translated. Deborah Smith learnt Korean to translate Han's works into English.

 

The tradition of translating India to the world is not new.

 

Over a century ago, Rabindranath Tagore translated his own poetry collection, Gitanjali, into English. He became the first non-European to win the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1913.

Originally in Bengali, Gitanjali (Song Offerings) introduced the spiritual depth and lyrical beauty of Indian poetry to the world.

 

Tagore's win marked a pivotal moment in the global recognition of Indian literature. In more recent years, works like Perumal Murugan’s Pyre and Fire Bird, and M Mukundan's Delhi: A Soliloquy have found new audiences through translation.

 

Translation is especially important for a country like India that is culturally and linguistically diverse.

 

"Without translation, people in a country like India would be locked into their own linguistic islands," Arunava Sinha, a literary translator, tells India Today Digital.

 

HEART LAMP, TOMB OF SAND AND THE MANY 'ENGLISHES'

 

In Kannada, Mushtaq's anthology – Heart Lamp – is called Haseena Mattu Itara Kathegalu.

 

After receiving the International Booker Award, Mushtaq said of her short stories that her heart had been her field of study. But for the Booker prize judges, it was the "new textures" of the stories and their "radical translation".

 

"A radical translation which ruffles language, to create new textures in a plurality of Englishes. It challenges and expands our understanding of translation," stated Max Porter.

 

Languages do not naturally map onto each other and await intricate translation.

 

 

 

 

That translation is particularly difficult when it comes to new words or expressions, was revealed by Frank Wynne, one of the member judges of the International Booker in 2022, when Geetanjali Shree's book won the award.

 

"In Tomb of Sand, I loved all three. World play, punning, neologisms and humour," said Wynne. "These are inherently difficult to translate since languages do not map onto one another; this is all the more true when the cultural context is very different."

 

In India, Tomb of Sand sold 50,000 copies, making it a resounding success for a work of literary fiction, and Ret Samadhi sold more than 35,000 copies. The novel became ubiquitous in train stations and airports across India, the New York Times reported.

 

INDIAN LITERATURE REACHES INDIANS, AND THE WORLD

 

Translated literature is about listening to the varied voices from across the world, sometimes even from the corners of one's country.

 

"How will we talk to one another and listen to one another without translation? Translation is the language of democracy," author-translator Sinha tells India Today Digital.

 

While Heart Lamp and Tomb of Sand were winners of the International Booker Prize, Tamil writer Perumal Murugan's Pyre made it to the award's longlist in 2023

 

Pyre reached the global audience because of the translation by Aniruddhan Vasudeva. The judges acknowledged how it was both "specific and universal" and "how flammable are fear and the distrust of others."

 

This was also seen in Murugan's Fire Bird.

 

Janani Kannan's translation of Fire Bird made the novel accessible to a global audience. Fire Bird won the 2023 JCB Prize for Literature, with Murugan receiving Rs 25 lakh and Kannan Rs 10 lakh in prize money.

 

The jury praised Kannan's translation for carrying "the rhythms not only of Tamil but of an entire way of being in the world", amplifying the novel's universal appeal.

 

Similarly, the English translation of M Mukundan's Delhi: A Soliloquy (originally Delhi Gadhakal in Malayalam), translated by Fathima EV and Nandakumar K, played a crucial role in elevating the novel's visibility and impact.

 

The translation introduced Mukundan's vivid portrayal of Delhi’s underbelly and the lives of Malayali migrants to international readers.

 

LOST IN TRANSLATION: WHAT REMAINS UNTRANSLATED

 

Translation, while a bridge between cultures, is not without its gaps. The act of carrying a story from one language to another often leaves behind subtle nuances, cultural idioms, and emotional undercurrents that defy translation.

 

 

 

For instance, the rhythmic cadence of Tamil in Perumal Murugan's Pyre. Words rooted in specific cultural practices – like the term Agmark (a certification mark), used colloquially to denote authenticity in Fire Bird – lose their immediacy when substituted.

 

The untranslatable also includes the intangible: the smell of rain-soaked earth in a Malayalam poem, the cadence of a Bengali lullaby, or the weight of Partition's trauma in Ret Samadhi.

 

As translator Aniruddhan Vasudeva noted in a 2023 interview, "You can translate the words, but the silences between them? That's where the story lives."

 

When asked about translation and its limitations, Geetanjali Shree had a point to make: "Translation is not about producing a replica or a clone. It is making another living being that carries the culture of the earlier one in a new avatar".

 

MANY MARQUEZ IN INDIA'S REGIONAL CRYPTS?

 

Though translation has certain limits, it is this magical art that completes world literature as we know it.

 

Gregory Rabassa's translation of One Hundred Years of Solitude captured the lyrical richness of Marquez's magical realism, letting non-Spanish readers experience a Colombia infused with myth and memory.

 

Similarly, Michael Heim's rendering of The Unbearable Lightness of Being made Kundera’s Czech philosophical reflections accessible, resonating with Cold War-era readers exploring questions of identity, freedom, and political disillusionment.

 

These translations did more than convey meaning – they recreated rhythm, tone, and cultural nuance, allowing the soul of each work to survive linguistic migration.

 

Constance Garnett's translation of Anna Karenina made the classic of Russian literature reach the world.

 

Pamuk's My Name is Red, through Erdag Goknar's deft translation, brought Ottoman aesthetics and philosophical depth into global consciousness, with dense cultural layers made legible but not diluted.

 

There is no need to make a case for translation, but it is important to reiterate how vital it is for the world of literature.

 

Edith Grossman, Marquez's translator, once stated, "The impact of the kind of artistic discovery that translation enables is profoundly important to the health and vitality of any language and any literature".

 

That is truer for entire genres of Indian literature. Oral traditions, regional folklore, and lesser-known dialects languish without translators or publishers.

 

What if they are pulled out of their regional crypts, and placed under the sun? We would discover the soul of Indian literature –and a whole new universe.

"The Iranian author, translator, and scholar of Persian literature Hassan Kamshad passed away on Thursday at the age 100.

 

Born in Isfahan, he earned a bachelor's degree in law from the University of Tehran. After completing his studies in 1948, Kamshad was employed by the Oil Company and moved to the oil-rich region of southern Iran, ISNA reported.

 

In 1954, filmmaker and literary figure Ebrahim Golestan arranged for Kamshad to begin teaching Persian at the University of Cambridge. Alongside teaching, he pursued his studies and earned a Ph.D. in Persian literature from Cambridge. After graduating, he continued teaching Persian at the same university as a faculty member. He also served as a visiting professor at the University of California.

 

After retiring, and upon the recommendation of Iranian writer Sadeq Chubak, who had also once worked for the Oil Company, Kamshad resumed translation work. He had begun translating years before his retirement, during his early years working at the Oil Company: “When I was transferred to Masjed Soleyman, I translated ‘Citizen Tom Paine’ (written by Howard Fast), and it was published,” he once said.

 

The first book he took on, in his own words, “seriously,” was “What is History?” by E. H. Carr, which was published by Kharazmi Publishing House in the 1970s. About choosing the book, he had said: “I knew the author of the book. I had attended his classes in Cambridge.”

 

After translating books that explored the philosophy of history, Kamshad developed an interest in the history of philosophy and eventually in philosophy itself. His first book in this field was the translation of “Sophie's World” by Norwegian author Jostein Gaarder, which was published in 1996 by Niloufar Publishing House. As in other countries, the book quickly became a bestseller in Iran.

 

The public's enthusiasm for “Sophie's World” stemmed from the fact that it was a philosophical novel, combining narrative with philosophical content, presenting the subject in simple language for a 15-year-old girl.

 

He then translated “Wittgenstein’s Poker” by David Edmonds and “The Story of Philosophy” by Bryan Magee, both of which, like “Sophie's World,” explain the history of philosophy and philosophical theories in simple language.

 

In addition to translation, Kamshad also published several original works, in which he explored the history of modern Persian prose as well as his own life. The most important of these is the book *Founders of Modern Persian Prose*, which is the translation of his doctoral dissertation.

 

In this book, he lists some of the earliest translations carried out during the Qajar era and refers to several of them, such as Abdollatif Tasuji’s translation of “One Thousand and One Nights” as “very fluent and beautiful.” However, he generally believed that “the best translations have been produced during our own lifetime.”

 

In the field of literature, Kamshad considered Mohammad Ghazi’s translations the best, and in the realm of philosophy, he regarded Ezzatollah Fooladvand’s translations as the finest.

Dans le récent Qui a peur du genre ? (2024), Judith Butler s’interroge sur la traduction et, de façon concomitante, sur la circulation des concepts dans les études de genre :

Parfois le mot ne marche pas dans d’autres langues, et parfois il se découvre des cousins linguistiques qu’il ignorait avoir. La saillance du terme dépend de la traduction, mais affirmer cette traduction altère souvent la signification d’un mot quand il arrive dans une autre langue et dans un autre contexte. (Butler, 2024, p. 54)

En effet, les déplacements culturels, disciplinaires et linguistiques des mots du genre nécessitent de repenser les moyens et réseaux de signification empruntés pour définir. De plus, le passage d’une langue ou d’une culture à l’autre, voire entre plus d’une langue et plus d’une culture, par la friction que ce mouvement suscite, fait saillir des nuances et des significations nouvelles.

La traduction des mots du genre, féministes et intersectionnels, ont des effets multiples, qui permettent de réfléchir à nouveaux frais les concepts. D’abord, elle est nécessaire pour lutter contre un impérialisme de l’anglais dans le champ (lequel se fait de plus en plus patent, alors qu’on parle par exemples en français des éthiques du care et des politiques queer), tout en pouvant mener à plus de malléabilité politique. Réfléchir aux « mots du genre » de façon interculturelle et interlinguistique, c’est aussi permettre à des pensées d’interagir de façon transnationale. Cette perspective transnationale permettant, explique Zahra Ali, de « transcender, de secouer (nefada) et de remettre en question les frontières nationales, de genre et de sexualité [et de] rompre avec l’idée d’un ‘ici’ et d’un ‘là-bas’ correspondant à une géographie imaginée qui nourrit les féminismes blancs hégémoniques du Nord » (Ali, 2023, p. 149). Enfin, et justement parce qu’un mot peut rarement être parfaitement « transposé » d’une langue à l’autre, les différentes résistances qu’offre la traduction sont fécondes : elles demandent de dénaturaliser le « texte » comme ce qui viendrait simplement représenter un fait naturel et pré-discursif. En ce sens, la traduction et l’«intraduisibilité » de ces mots sont au centre même du fondement théorique des études de genre, et lorsqu’interrogées, elles viennent créer de l’étrangeté dans la langue, forcent à remanier les termes en les faisant toujours trembler, réfutent l’apparente transparence du discours.

Les déplacements linguistique et culturel ont été au centre de la théorisation des études du genre occidentales du Nord global, émergeant de la rencontre entre la « French theory » et la littérature comparée nord-américaine. Ainsi, Anne Emmanuelle Berger, dans Le Grand Théâtre du genre, raconte qu’« après avoir assisté à la fabrication de la ‘pensée française’ aux États-Unis, [elle a] assist[é], de retour en France, à la ‘réinvention’ des Gender Studies, supposées ‘débarquer’ des États-Unis » (Berger, 2013, p. 10).  Si les mots du genre sont, dans cette généalogie franco-états-unienne, toujours déjà venus d’ailleurs (tenus comme des étrangers, et considérés comme tels par leurs détracteurs), ils ont toutefois eu tendance à se fixer dans l’anglais. Penser de façon critique les traductions des mots du genre, c’est chercher à les sortir de l’impérialisme des ornières anglo-occidentales, blanches et androcentrées, et se rappeler que les politiques queer sont, par définition, transfrontalières (Preciado, 2003). C’est aussi penser, avec les écoféministes (Haraway, 1991, 2016; d’Eaubonne, 1974) aux relations possibles ou impossibles entre différentes oppressions, capitalistes, patriarcales et coloniales. C’est, donc, critiquer, comme a pu le faire la pensée intersectionnelle (hooks, 1981; Creenshaw, 1989, 1991), la tentation d’une « traduction » trop directe entre les luttes propres à chaque oppression, qui tend à effacer, au sein du féminisme, les nuances et la spécificité des expériences des minorités. En ce sens, réfléchir la traduction et les déplacements des mots du genre à partir des limites épistémologiques ou apories de la langue (Athanasiou, 2003), c’est se rappeler que le savoir est situé, non seulement de façon expérientielle, mais aussi culturellement, linguistiquement et disciplinairement.  

Car les théories féministes et les questions queer sont, d’emblée, interdisciplinaires. Tout comme pour la traduction linguistique, ce voyage entre les disciplines crée à son tour de nécessaires frottements dans les définitions, des mésententes qu’il faut interroger. Comment envisage-t-on l’« asexualité » en sociologie, comment la comprend-on en médecine ? Comment les « savoirs situés » peuvent-ils émerger des sciences de la nature, pour aller vers l’anthropologie, et la philosophie ?  Enfin, comment le détournement des mots et des discours d’une discipline vers l’autre sont-ils reliés épistémologiquement aux politiques queer ?, Preciado expliquant que « les corps de la multitude queer sont aussi des réappropriations et des détournements des discours de la médecine anatomique et de la pornographie, entre autres, qui ont construit le corps straight et le corps déviant modernes » (Preciado, 2003, p. 22).

C’est donc la (non)définition, jamais claire et définitive, des « mots du genre » à l’aune de leurs déplacements que nous voulons étudier/analyser/débattre dans ce colloque. La difficulté à traduire ces mots, figures et concepts remettrait en question l’unicité d’un sens qui soit figé, et qui puisse, tel quel, traverser langues, cultures et disciplines. En ce sens, la circulation des mots du genre demande de toujours remettre en scène la centralité du langage, du discours et de sa performativité dans la réflexion politique. Elle est au cœur des possibilités politiques d’association horizontale, alors que « la traduction est la condition de possibilité d’un féminisme transnational et d’une solidarité effective contre le mouvement idéologique anti-genre. » (Butler, 2024, p. 54)

In the recent Who’s Afraid of Gender? (2024), Judith Butler reflects on translation and, concurrently, on the circulation of concepts within gender studies:

Sometimes a word does not work in other languages, and other times it discovers linguistic cousins it never knew it had. The salience of the term depends on translation, and affirming that translation often alters the meaning of a word as it arrives in another language and another context. (Butler 2024: 35).

Indeed, the cultural, disciplinary, and linguistic displacement of gendered language calls for a reconsideration of the semiotic pathways and networks used to define key terms. The movement from one language or culture to another—or among multiple languages and cultures—creates friction that brings to light new nuances and meanings.

The translation of gender-related, feminist, and intersectional terms produces a range of effects that invite fresh conceptual reflection. On one hand, translation is necessary to resist the increasing imperialism of English in the field (as seen, for example, in the adoption of ethics of care or queer politics in francophone scholarship), while also enabling greater political flexibility. Thinking about “the words of gender” through an intercultural and interlinguistic lens allows for the transnational dialogue of ideas. As Zahra Ali explains, this transnational perspective enables us “to transcend, to shake up (nefada), and to challenge national, gender, and sexual boundaries [and to] break with the idea of a ‘here’ and a ‘there’ mapped onto an imagined geography that sustains hegemonic white feminisms of the Global North” (Ali 2023: 149). Crucially, because no word can be perfectly “transposed” from one language to another, the resistances inherent to translation are intellectually generative: they compel us to denaturalize a “text” as something that might otherwise be seen as merely representing pre-discursive or natural facts. In this sense, the translation—and untranslatability—of such words lies at the very heart of the theoretical foundations of gender studies. When examined critically, translation introduces a productive strangeness into language, forces us to rework our terms, and undermines the illusion of discursive transparency.

Linguistic and cultural shifts have long been central to gender theory in the Western academy, particularly in the Global North, emerging from the entangled genealogies of French theory and North American comparative literature. Anne Emmanuelle Berger, in Le Grand Théâtre du genre, recalls that “after witnessing the making of ‘French thought’ in the United States, [she then] observed the ‘reinvention’ of Gender Studies upon returning to France, as if they had just ‘arrived’ from the U.S.” (Berger 2013: 10; our translation). Within this Franco-American genealogy, the words of gender are always already foreign—treated as outsiders and regarded as such by their critics—but they have nonetheless tended to become anchored in English. To critically reflect on the translation of gender-related terminology is to work toward freeing these terms from the grip of Anglo-Western, white, androcentric paradigms, and to remember that queer politics are, by definition, transborder (Preciado 2003). This also requires engaging with ecofeminist thought (Haraway 1991; 2016; d’Eaubonne 1974) on the possible or impossible relations among various systems of oppression—capitalist, patriarchal, and colonial. As intersectional thinkers have argued (hooks 1981; Crenshaw 1989; 1991), a too-direct “translation” of struggles across axes of oppression risks erasing within feminism the nuance and specificity of minoritized experiences. To reflect on the translation and displacement of gendered terms through the epistemological limits or "aporias of language" (Athanasiou 2003) is to acknowledge that knowledge is situated not only experientially, but also culturally, linguistically, and disciplinarily.

Feminist theories and queer questions are, from the outset, interdisciplinary. Much like linguistic translation, disciplinary border crossings generate productive friction in definitions and call for the interrogation of misunderstandings. How, form instance, is “asexuality” conceptualized in sociology, and how is it understood in medicine? How can “situated knowledges” emerge from the natural sciences and migrate into anthropology or philosophy? How are disciplinary shifts in terminology epistemologically linked to queer politics? Preciado notes that “the bodies of the queer multitude are also reappropriations and détournements of discourses from anatomical medicine and pornography, among others, which have constructed the modern straight and deviant body” (Preciado 2003: 22; our translation).

This conference invites critical reflection on the (non)definition of “the words of gender” as revealed through their movements. The difficulty of translating these terms, figures, and concepts calls into question the fixity of meaning and its ability to cross languages, cultures, and disciplines unchanged. Thus, the circulation of gendered terminology urges us to foreground the centrality of language, discourse, and performativity in political thought. It lies at the heart of the horizontal political possibilities of coalition, insofar as “translation is the condition of possibility for transnational feminism and effective solidarity against the ideological anti-gender movement” (Butler 2024: 35).

Paper and panel proposals must be submitted to lesmotsdugenre@gmail.com by September 1, 2025. We particularly welcome proposals addressing (but not limited to) the following themes:

• The conceptual consequences of defining a term in gender theory


• Linguistic imperialism and decolonial or postcolonial approaches to gender theory


• The impact of cultural or linguistic transfer on a gender-related concept, or proposals for alternative translations


• The definition and circulation of feminist/queer terms emerging from non-Western cultures


• Approaches to or analyses of the linguistic translation of a feminist or queer work


• Disciplinary shifts in the meaning or usage of gender-related terms


• Genealogies of concepts, figures, or imaginaries of gender (non-linear temporalities)

We also encourage proposals for interdisciplinary, interlinguistic, or intercultural panels (3 or 4 participants) organized around a single term or concept. In such sessions, individual presentations need not all address the term’s circulation directly; the panel as a whole will be expected to address this dimension.

While presentations can be in either of the three languages (French, English or Spanish), discussions will happen in French.

The conference will be held at the Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières from May 21 to 23, 2026.

This event is organized in partnership with the Dictionary of Gender in Translation. A selection of papers will be considered for publication in this online volume.

En su reciente ensayo ¿Quién teme al género? (2024), Judith Butler reflexiona sobre la traducción y, de manera concomitante, sobre la circulación de conceptos en los estudios de género:

A veces la palabra no funciona en otros idiomas, y a veces descubre parientes lingüísticos que no sabía que tenía. La relevancia del término depende de la traducción, pero afirmar esta traducción a menudo altera el significado de una palabra al llegar a otra lengua y a otro contexto. (Butler, 2024, p. 54; nuestra traducción)

En efecto, los desplazamientos culturales, disciplinares y lingüísticos de las palabras del género exigen repensar los caminos y redes de significación que se usan al definir. El paso de una lengua o cultura a otra —o entre varias de ellas— genera fricciones que hacen emerger nuevos matices y significados.

La traducción de los términos vinculados al género, al feminismo y a la interseccionalidad tiene múltiples efectos que permiten replantear muchos conceptos. Por un lado, la traducción resulta necesaria para resistir el imperialismo creciente del inglés en este campo (como se observa, por ejemplo, en el uso de care o de queer en lengua francesa), al tiempo que permite mayor flexibilidad política. Pensar en las “palabras del género” desde una perspectiva intercultural e interlingüística también posibilita un diálogo transnacional de saberes. Esta perspectiva transnacional permite, como señala Zahra Ali, “trascender, sacudir (nefada) y cuestionar las fronteras nacionales, de género y de sexualidad [y] romper con la idea de un ‘aquí’ y un ‘allá’ correspondiente a una geografía imaginada que alimenta los feminismos blancos hegemónicos del Norte” (Ali, 2023, p. 149). Además, precisamente porque rara vez una palabra puede “trasponerse” de manera perfecta de una lengua a otra, las resistencias propias de la traducción son fértiles: obligan a desnaturalizar el “texto” como simple representación de un hecho natural y prediscursivo. En este sentido, la traducción —y la intraducibilidad— de estas palabras está en el corazón mismo de los fundamentos teóricos de los estudios de género. Cuando se interrogan críticamente, crean un extrañamiento en la lengua, fuerzan a reelaborar los términos y desmantelan la supuesta transparencia del discurso.

Los desplazamientos lingüísticos y culturales han estado en el centro de la teorización de los estudios de género en Occidente, especialmente en el Norte global, nacidos del encuentro entre la French Theory y la literatura comparada en América del Norte. Así lo describe Anne Emmanuelle Berger en Le grand théâtre du genre, al señalar que “después de haber asistido a la fabricación del ‘pensamiento francés’ en Estados Unidos, [ella asistió], de vuelta en Francia, a la ‘reinvención’ de los Gender Studies, que supuestamente ‘llegaban’ desde Estados Unidos” (Berger, 2013, p. 10; nuestra traducción). Si las palabras del género, en esta genealogía francoestadounidense, son extranjeras por definición —y tratadas como tales por sus detractores—, tienden sin embargo a fijarse en inglés. Pensar críticamente la traducción de estos términos significa sacarlos de las rutas hegemónicas anglo-occidentales, blancas y androcéntricas, y recordar que las políticas queer son, por definición, transfronterizas (Preciado, 2003). También implica pensar, con las ecofeministas (Haraway, 1991, 2016; d’Eaubonne, 1974), en las posibles —o imposibles— relaciones entre diferentes formas de opresión: capitalistas, patriarcales y coloniales. Así, como propone el pensamiento interseccional (hooks, 1981; Crenshaw, 1989, 1991), se vuelve necesario criticar la tentación de una “traducción” demasiado directa entre luchas específicas, que puede borrar, dentro del feminismo, la especificidad de las experiencias de las minorías. En este sentido, reflexionar sobre la traducción y el desplazamiento de los términos del género desde sus límites epistemológicos o “aporías lingüísticas” (Athanasiou, 2003; nuestra traducción) significa recordar que el saber está situado no solo de forma experiencial, sino también cultural, lingüística y disciplinarmente.

Las teorías feministas y las cuestiones queer son, desde sus inicios, interdisciplinares. Al igual que ocurre con la traducción lingüística, el cruce entre disciplinas produce fricciones necesarias en las definiciones, malentendidos que es preciso interrogar. ¿Cómo se concibe la “asexualidad” en sociología? ¿Cómo se interpreta en medicina? ¿Cómo pueden emerger los “saberes situados” en las ciencias naturales y trasladarse hacia la antropología o la filosofía? ¿Cómo se relacionan epistemológicamente los desplazamientos de términos y discursos entre disciplinas con las políticas queer? Preciado sostiene que “los cuerpos de la multitud queer son también reapropiaciones y desvíos de los discursos de la medicina anatómica y de la pornografía, entre otros, que han construido el cuerpo recto y el cuerpo desviado modernos” (Preciado, 2003, p. 22; nuestra traducción).

Este coloquio se propone interrogar la (no)definición —nunca clara ni definitiva— de las “palabras del género” a partir de sus desplazamientos. La dificultad de traducir estos términos, figuras y conceptos pone en cuestión la posibilidad de una significación única, fija y universal, capaz de atravesar idiomas, culturas y disciplinas sin alteración. En este sentido, la circulación de estas palabras exige que volvamos a poner en escena la centralidad del lenguaje, del discurso y de su performatividad dentro del pensamiento político. Esta circulación está en el corazón mismo de las posibilidades políticas de asociación horizontal, ya que “la traducción es la condición de posibilidad de un feminismo transnacional y de una solidaridad efectiva contra el movimiento ideológico antigénero” (Butler, 2024, p. 54; nuestra traducción).

También animamos a presentar paneles interdisciplinares, interlingüísticos o interculturales (de 3 o 4 personas) en torno a un solo término o concepto. En estas sesiones, no es necesario que cada comunicación aborde la circulación del término, que será tratada por el conjunto de la sesión.

Las presentaciones pueden realizarse en uno de los tres idiomas (francés, inglés o español), pero las discusiones se realizan en francés.

El coloquio se celebrará en la Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières del 21 al 23 de mayo de 2026.

Humans might soon be able to see in the dark — or even through their eyelids.

A team in China has woven tiny, light-converting particles into soft contact lenses, granting wearers the power to perceive infrared light both in the dark and, surprisingly, with their eyes closed.

The “seeing with your eyes shut” part arises because near-infrared light penetrates the eyelid more effectively than visible light. That futuristic enhancement doesn’t even need a source of power to operate.

The science behind the magic relies on upconverting nanoparticles — an elegant bit of physics that stretches the limits of human vision. Under normal conditions, the human eye can detect electromagnetic radiation in the range of roughly 400 to 700 nanometers, encompassing all the colors of visible light from violet to red. Anything beyond that range, such as ultraviolet or infrared light, is invisible to us because our photoreceptors simply aren’t built to respond to it.

But these newly engineered contact lenses change the rules. The upconverting nanoparticles absorb multiple low-energy infrared photons, each invisible on its own, and combine their energy to emit a single, higher-energy photon in the visible spectrum. These particles absorb glimmers of low-energy infrared light (800–1,600 nm) and emit single bursts of visible light (400–700 nm), right onto your cornea.

It’s a bit similar to how night vision goggles work, but with a key twist. Night vision goggles — first developed during World War II — typically use an image intensifier tube. This entire process requires electricity, bulky hardware, and a lens system. It amplifies light but doesn’t truly shift the light’s wavelength. The new lens is more efficient and doesn’t need a power supply.

“Our research opens up the potential for non-invasive wearable devices to give people super-vision,” says senior author Tian Xue, a neuroscientist at the University of Science and Technology of China. “There are many potential applications right away for this material. For example, flickering infrared light could be used to transmit information in security, rescue, encryption or anti-counterfeiting settings.”

From mice to humans
The team had earlier demonstrated this concept in mice by injecting the particles directly into their eyes. This was a powerful proof of concept, but not exactly a comfortable upgrade for humans. The new lenses sidestep the syringe entirely.

First came tests in mice. Their pupils shrank in response to infrared stimuli, and brain scans showed that visual areas lit up just as they would with normal light. Researchers subjected the mice to a classic “light or no light” maze. The animals preferred hiding in dark boxes, as expected. But when infrared light lit one of the boxes, only lens-wearing mice avoided it — evidence that they could now see wavelengths beyond their natural reach.

Then came humans. Participants wearing the lenses were able to detect Morse-code-like infrared flashes and determine the direction they were coming from. The lenses even worked with closed eyes — an eerie, almost supernatural ability that would presumably make it very difficult to sleep at night.

The researchers also wanted to see if they could get people to see colors in the dark. They designed the lenses to distinguish between different parts of the infrared spectrum by color. For example, 980 nm infrared became blue, 808 nm turned red, and 1532 nm showed up as green. This approach could help users read invisible codes or even help people with color blindness. Essentially, it could get people to see colors they can’t naturally see.

Still, there are limits. The lenses currently only detect powerful, narrow-band infrared sources, like LEDs. That’s why participants couldn’t read a book or recognize facial features in low-light rooms. The lenses scatter light too much to provide detail."

Ele foi escolhido por 22 votos. Britto já publicou mais de uma dúzia de livros e também é conhecido pela tradução de cerca de 120 obras de autores de língua inglesa, como Jonathan Swift, Charles Dickens, Henry James, Virginia Woolf, V. S. Naipaul, Thomas Pynchon e James Baldwin.

Na poesia, traduziu Byron, Wallace Stevens, Elizabeth Bishop e Frank O’Hara, entre outros. Na PUC-Rio atua em duas linhas de pesquisa, tradução de poesia e poesia brasileira contemporânea. O presidente da ABL, Merval Pereira, disse que Paulo Henriques Britto vai permitir explorar mais profundamente a relação entre poesia, dramaturgia e cultura nacional. “Ele é o maior tradutor de língua inglesa que nós temos, crítico literário e poeta. Tem múltiplas funções e será muito útil para a Academia. Buscamos a representação da cultura em vários setores. Estes momentos são importantes porque são a renovação do inevitável. Por isso chamam de imortal. Quem foi da Academia é sempre lembrado”.

 

Para Lilia Schwarcz, Paulo Henriques Britto é excelente poeta de sensibilidade impar e grandissíssimo tradutor. "O trabalho dele como tradutor é muito memorável. Conhece as pessoas e vai colaborar muito. E os poetas são sempre bem-vindos". O acadêmico Antonio Torres também comemorou a eleição. “É um belo poeta, um grande tradutor. Tradutor com poucos no Brasil. E, além do mais, é uma pessoa de muito bom convívio. É um professor, um mestre das letras. Ou seja, ele vem para o lugar certo. Ele vem para a Academia Brasileira de Letras. É o lugar dele”.

"Wilmington City Council is launching a real-time language translation service at its regular meeting on Thursday, May 22, marking a significant step toward making local government more accessible to non-English-speaking residents.

 

 

 

 

The new service, powered by the AI software Wordly, provides live translations in over 50 languages and will be available during council meetings both in-person and online. The rollout of the tool is part of a broader effort to address longstanding language barriers faced by Wilmington’s Spanish-speaking and immigrant communities.

 

“We recognize that many of our residents speak a different language,” said Council President Trippi Congo. “Government should never be out of reach because of language. With Wordly, we’re breaking that barrier and inviting everyone to the table.”

 

The initiative was led by 2nd District Councilwoman Shané Darby, who said the goal is to build a more inclusive city government, starting with Spanish and expanding to other languages as needed.

 

“Government must reflect the people it serves,” said Darby. “When we make space for more voices, we make better decisions.”

 

Users can access the service by scanning a QR code available in the Council Chambers or Council Committee Room, or by visiting a specific link. They can then select their language of choice to receive real-time captions or audio through their personal devices, without the need for an app or special equipment. Spanish captions will also appear on TV monitors for in-person attendees. Translated recordings of meetings will be available on demand at WITN22.org.

 

At-Large Councilwoman Maria D. Cabrera, the first Hispanic woman elected to City Council in 2012, has long advocated for language inclusivity and praised the new service.

 

“The information we release should have an option for translation, not just to Spanish, but to other languages as well,” said Cabrera. “The Wordly software allows for more participation from those groups who may not have accessibility to this information in their language. I applaud everyone who made this happen. This is just one of the other initiatives we are working on to make government inclusive.”

 

6th District Councilwoman Yolanda McCoy also supported the move, noting the cost-effectiveness and reach of AI translation.

 

“I support this initiative as a large population of non-English speakers in Wilmington live in my district,” said McCoy. “It allows the city to better communicate with residents who do not speak English, without the need to hire multiple translators. This technology improves efficiency while helping us reach more people in an inclusive and fiscally responsible way.”

 

Council members say they hope the new technology sets a precedent for other cities in the state.

 

“We are proud to be a city that leads with heart and innovation,” said Congo. “We hope other cities across Delaware follow Wilmington’s example in creating space where everyone’s voice is heard and understood.”"

ABSTRACT
This study employs a mixed methods research approach to examine whether the role of interpreters using AI-translated live captions in simultaneous interpreting undergoes changes. This study posits that the interpreters’ roles change in tandem with modifications in their working modes. A total of 51 professional interpreters (n = 51), each possessing more than five years of experience in simultaneous interpreting and who used AI-translated live captions in simultaneous interpreting, participated in this research. To validate this hypothesis, the research utilised both questionnaires and semi-structured one-on-one interviews. As for the interview data, they were subjected to word frequency analysis, case analysis, and thematic coding. In general, respondents acknowledged that their working modes had indeed been influenced by AI-translated live captions. Despite this, the fundamental roles of interpreters remained largely unchanged. However, when compared to traditional simultaneous interpretation without the aid of AI-translated live captions, the primary role of interpreters had diminished somewhat. Participants in this study commonly hold the belief that the employment of AI-translated live captions diminishes their visibility, primarily because a portion of the target language output is derived directly from AI-translated live captions, rather than their own contributions.

Il y a deux mois, une option de résumé automatique et une fonctionnalité de réécriture, toutes deux boostées à l'IA, ont également été déployées.

Un générateur de texte déployé dans Notepad
Dans un article paru hier sur le blog Windows, Dave Grochocki, chef de produit principal du groupe Applications Windows Inbox, a partagé plusieurs avancées intéressantes. Proposée aux Windows Insiders dans les canaux Canary et Dev sur Windows 11, elles concernent notamment le logiciel Notepad.

Les testeurs pourront découvrir une nouvelle fonctionnalité permettant « de rédiger rapidement un texte en fonction de vos suggestions, ce qui vous permet de partir d'une page blanche ou de développer du contenu existant grâce à l'assistance de l'IA. »

Pour y accéder, il suffira de sélectionner du texte, de faire un clic droit, de sélectionner l'option « Écrire » et de rédiger un prompt. Les utilisateurs pourront ensuite conserver le texte et l'affiner, si besoin est, ou choisir de le supprimer. Des crédits IA et un compte Microsoft seront nécessaires pour utiliser cette option.

Des nouveautés débarquent aussi sur Paint et Capture d'écran
Les développeurs ont également déployé une mise à jour pour Paint. Le logiciel d'édition d'images inclut désormais un générateur d'autocollants IA. Disponible dans le menu Copilot, l'outil proposera plusieurs versions de stickers sur la base d'un prompt. L'utilisateur pourra ensuite les ajouter à son travail ou les enregistrer pour un usage ultérieur.

Mais ce n'est pas tout : un outil de sélection intelligente a aussi été ajouté dans Paint pour sélectionner et modifier des éléments spécifiques. De plus, Microsoft a aussi mis en place une nouvelle boîte de dialogue afin de présenter aux nouveaux utilisateurs les fonctionnalités phares du logiciel.

L'outil Capture d'écran a également été amélioré : une fonctionnalité nommée « Capture d'écran parfaite », disponible uniquement pour les PC Copilot+ a notamment été intégrée. Les testeurs Windows Insiders peuvent la trouver dans la barre d'outils de l'application : « Une fois activée, la capture d'écran parfaite se redimensionne intelligemment en fonction du contenu sélectionné ».

Les développeurs ont aussi optimisé le sélecteur de couleurs du service pour lui permettre de « capturer davantage d'informations à l'écran grâce au sélecteur de couleurs. »

Ces avancées étant encore en test, il est impossible, à l'heure actuelle, de savoir quand elles seront déployées globalement."

Invité à s’exprimer sur le rôle et le pouvoir de la fiction dans le cadre d’une série de conférences à l’Université d’Oxford à l’automne 2022, l’écrivain colombien Juan Gabriel Vásquez (Le bruit des choses qui tombent, Le corps des ruines) nous donne avec La traduction du monde le fruit de ces réflexions. Convaincu qu’il « existe un lien direct entre la place occupée par la fiction dans une société et la bonne santé de sa démocratie », le roman, genre dont les meilleurs ouvrages nous révèlent « ce qui est invisible, caché, ignoré », lui semble indissociable d’une certaine éthique de l’ambiguïté. Il est aussi pour lui « toujours un acte de révolte ». Convoquant Cervantès, Conrad, Defoe, Kundera, García Márquez, Yourcenar et Proust (pour qui le « devoir et la tâche d’un écrivain sont ceux d’un traducteur »), le romancier explore également les liens étroits, en particulier dans son œuvre, qui existent entre l’Histoire et la littérature. Un plaidoyer intelligent et vibrant pour la littérature et pour la liberté de conscience.

"Bilingual Health-Care Staff Are Not Interpreters

Speaking two languages doesn’t make a person qualified to interpret complex medical information. Patients and health-care workers deserve better.

 

Bilingual health-care staff are often asked to informally take on interpretation work for patients, work that should be the domain of medical interpreters. 

 

In health-care settings across Canada, bilingual staff are frequently asked to interpret for patients with limited English proficiency. This may seem like a practical solution, but the reality is more complex and potentially harmful for both patients and staff.

 

As a certified medical interpreter, I’ve seen first-hand how often informal interpreting arrangements happen in health-care settings. Even when professional interpreters like me are available, we are sometimes turned away, and bilingual staff — often nurses or unit clerks — are pulled in to interpret instead.

 

These staff are rarely given a choice, much less formal consent or adequate support. When time is short and the needs are pressing, asking a nearby bilingual clerk to relay vital information might seem like a practical solution.

 

But when we cut corners like this, critical nuances are missed — and that can have serious consequences.

 

It is increasingly common in Canada for patients to speak a first language other than English or French, Canada’s two official languages. According to Statistics Canada’s 2021 census, more than half a million people in Canada speak predominantly Mandarin at home, and another half a million speak Punjabi at home; 393,430 Canadians speak Yue (Cantonese), 317,365 speak Spanish, 285,915 speak Arabic, and 275,040 speak Tagalog.

 

Being a bilingual health professional does not mean you are qualified to interpret medical information. Medical interpreting is a specialized profession. Medical interpreters have training in medical terminology, accuracy, confidentiality and cultural nuance, among other skills. The work also requires impartiality — something that is nearly impossible to maintain when the work of interpreting is added on top of a health-care worker’s existing role.

 

When nurses, clerks or other staff are asked to interpret, they’re placed in a dual role that directly conflicts with their primary responsibilities. Even when the interpreting nurse is familiar with the patient — such as a charging nurse overseeing their care — that familiarity can make things worse, not better.

 

Instead of neutrally conveying what the patient is saying, they may insert their own opinions, summarize or offer a clinical interpretation rather than an accurate translation. This undermines patient-centred communication and shifts the focus away from the patient’s voice. The pressure to support colleagues, manage time or maintain team dynamics only further compromises neutrality.

 

Cultural proximity adds another layer of complexity. Many bilingual staff share cultural backgrounds with the patients they are asked to interpret for. While this might initially appear beneficial, it can lead to unconscious bias or emotional entanglement. Professional interpreters are trained to recognize and manage this, but bilingual staff typically are not.

 

The burden falls particularly hard on immigrant women, who make up a significant portion of Canada’s health-care support workforce. They are often expected to interpret without language assessment, without training and without pay. Over time, this leads to emotional exhaustion and burnout.

 

This is not just anecdotal. A 2017 study titled “Risk and Protective Factors Impacting Burnout in Bilingual, Latina/o Clinicians” found that bilingual clinicians suffered higher levels of emotional fatigue and depersonalization. Many reported being routinely asked to take on extra duties like translating documents, interpreting clinical conversations or educating colleagues about a patient’s culture.

 

None of this was officially part of their job description, and it was rarely acknowledged or compensated.

 

The risks of informal interpretation will only grow over time

 

This problem isn’t new, but it is becoming more urgent. As Canada ramps up recruitment of internationally trained health-care professionals, many of whom are multilingual, the risk of informal interpreting will only grow. Canada is not hiring these workers to act as interpreters, but in the absence of clear policies and accountability, it’s likely they will still be asked to interpret, just as many already are.

 

Language interpretation work in health care should be delivered by trained, qualified professionals, whether on site, by phone or through video remote platforms. Research has repeatedly shown that this is not just best practice, but essential. Reports such as 2005’s “Pay Now or Pay Later: Providing Interpreter Services in Health Care” and 2021’s “Investing in Language Access to Optimize Health System Performance” have demonstrated that the use of professional interpreters reduces medical errors, prevents costly complications and improves patient outcomes.

 

Yet across Canada, access to trained interpreters remains inconsistent. We lack a government-level policy that mandates or enforces the proper use of language services in health care.

 

Other countries have already set a higher standard. In Australia and the United States, legislation requires health-care providers to use qualified interpreters when language barriers are present.

 

Failing to do so can constitute a breach of the legal duty of care. Canada needs to follow this example with clear policy, proper funding and real accountability.

 

We also need to invest in the long-term sustainability of professional interpreting. That means creating pathways for interpreter training, offering fair compensation and recognizing this work as a vital part of the health-care system.

 

Without these supports, we will continue to face a shortage of qualified interpreters, leaving the burden to fall on bilingual staff who are not trained or positioned to take on this responsibility.

 

Language access is not an optional service. It’s a core element of safe, equitable and effective health care. We must stop treating interpretation as a favour or an afterthought and start treating it as a standard of care.

 

Patients deserve clear communication. Health-care providers deserve support. And bilingual staff deserve clear professional boundaries that don’t require them to bring skills from their home lives to work. We owe it to everyone to build a health-care system that gets this right."

Le désir de classifier, d’expliquer et de traduire nos mots semble inhérent au langage lui-même. Au fil des siècles, les ouvrages exhaustifs qui prennent le nom de glossaire, de dictionnaire ou d’encyclopédie répondent à des ambitions pragmatiques et politiques, pour affirmer une langue, le français.

 

 

 

 

A l’automne 2024, lorsque la neuvième édition du Dictionnaire de l’Académie française est publiée, quatre-vingt-dix ans se sont écoulés depuis l’édition précédente, en 1934. Cette lenteur dont l’institution est coutumière depuis sa fondation a suscité nombre de quolibets. Comme par le passé : en 1694, lorsque les académiciens avaient remis la première édition du dictionnaire à Louis XIV, le roi n’avait pas manqué de mentionner les soixante ans nécessaires à l’écriture du volume : « Messieurs, voici un ouvrage attendu depuis longtemps. »

Aujourd’hui, ce n’est plus seulement le temps d’élaboration du dictionnaire qui est décrié, mais ses définitions. La Ligue des droits de l’homme (LDH) a ainsi fait état de sa « stupéfaction » au sujet d’entrées qui participent, selon l’association, d’une « vision au mieux archaïque de notre monde ». L’« hétérosexualité » y est ainsi définie comme une sexualité « naturelle », impliquant ipso facto que l’homosexualité ne le serait pas, et le mot « femme » y désigne un « être humain défini par ses caractères sexuels, qui lui permettent de mettre au monde des enfants », ce qui étonne la LDH..."

La relevancia de los datos en el mundo actual es incuestionable. Varios organismos internacionales han señalado que la inversión en “centros de datos” ha superado los 300 mil millones de dólares en el año 2024 y prevén que dicha inversión irá en aumento en los próximos años porque este tipo de infraestructuras son necesarias para el desarrollo de la Inteligencia Artificial (IA), la computación en la nube (cloud computing), el desarrollo del 5G y el Internet de las cosas, y la consolidación del

 

streaming y los servicios digitales. En este marco se sitúa el curso, que analizará la relación entre los datos lexicográficos y el diccionario digital.

 

 

 

 

Un diccionario digital es una aplicación informática que sirve de herramienta de consulta. Está compuesta por tres componentes principales: la base de datos lexicográfica, la interfaz gráfica del usuario o GUI (Graphical User Interface) y el sistema (o sistemas) de acceso a los datos o búsqueda de los mismos. La interrelación de estos tres sistemas se manifiesta de forma clara en una serie de ideas, que, con especial referencia al español, serán objeto de estudio y debate durante el curso. 

 

 

 

 

Primero, el diseño, construcción y actualización de una herramienta de consulta están íntimamente relacionados con el concepto de dato lexicográfico, que es tanto una unidad de representación “fungible” (es decir, que puede aislarse, venderse, modificarse, por sí misma) como “cognitivamente independiente” (es decir, diseñada para evitar el estrés cognitivo que se produce cuando se usan abreviaturas, definiciones recursivas y otras estructuras lexicográficas que obligan al usuario a llevar a cabo más de un proceso para comprenderlo y poder usarlo con garantías).

 

 

 

 

Segundo, el dato lexicográfico es objeto de trabajo de la lexicografía, que es una disciplina independiente con una gran vocación interdisciplinar. Como tal, colabora con otras disciplinas en la búsqueda de soluciones específicas a problemas concretos, como son las diferencias entre sense y reference y su descripción específica, las diversas posibilidades que existen de acceder y presentar los datos lexicográficos, o el diseño de la página web del diccionario.

 

 

 

 

Tercero, la tecnología es un elemento central en el diseño, construcción y actualización de cualquier diccionario digital; por ejemplo, la llegada de tecnologías “disruptivas” (o desestabilizadoras) como la Inteligencia Artificial generativa está modificando sustancialmente tanto el trabajo lexicográfico como la propia investigación en lexicografía.

 

 

 

 

Cuarto, las tres ideas que acabamos de mencionar influyen claramente en los aspectos concretos que debemos abordar a la hora de diseñar, construir y tener siempre actualizado un diccionario concreto como puede ser el Diccionario Digital del Español (DIDES).

Un influenceur algérien jugé pour provocation au terrorisme : le procès d’Imadtintin met la traduction sous les projecteurs. Quels enjeux pour la justice ? 

 

 

 

 

Dans une salle d’audience baignée par la lumière froide de Grenoble, un homme de 31 ans, connu sous le pseudonyme d’Imadtintin, se tient à la barre. Ce vendredi 23 mai 2025, Imad Ould Brahim, influenceur algérien suivi par des milliers de personnes sur TikTok, fait face à une accusation lourde : provocation directe à un acte de terrorisme. Mais au-delà des vidéos incriminées, c’est une question bien plus subtile qui émerge au fil des débats : celle de la traduction. Comment des mots prononcés en arabe, sous-titrés en français, peuvent-ils faire basculer un destin dans une salle de tribunal ?

 

 

 

 

Un Procès aux Enjeux Multiples

 

L’affaire débute par une dénonciation. Un activiste politique, exilé en France et opposé au régime algérien, repère des vidéos sur le compte TikTok d’Imadtintin. Ces publications, selon lui, incitent à la violence contre les opposants du pouvoir en place à Alger. Il les reposte, accompagnées de sous-titres en français, et alerte les autorités. Ce signalement conduit à l’arrestation d’Imad Ould Brahim début janvier. Mais dès l’ouverture du procès, un problème central se pose : les traductions des vidéos sont-elles fiables ?

 

 

 

 

Le tribunal correctionnel de Grenoble doit trancher. Les accusations reposent sur des extraits vidéo où l’influenceur semble appeler à des actes violents. Pourtant, la défense soutient que les sous-titres, réalisés par un tiers, pourraient avoir déformé le sens originel des propos. Ce n’est pas seulement une question de mots, mais de contexte, de culture et d’intention.

 

 

 

 

La Traduction : Un Pont ou un Mur ?

 

Traduire, c’est transporter une idée d’une langue à une autre, mais c’est aussi, parfois, trahir. Dans le cas d’Imadtintin, les sous-titres français des vidéos en arabe ont joué un rôle clé. Ont-ils exagéré, voire altéré, les propos de l’influenceur ? Les experts linguistiques convoqués au tribunal soulignent la difficulté de traduire des expressions idiomatiques ou des références culturelles spécifiques. Une phrase anodine dans un contexte peut devenir incendiaire dans un autre.

 

 

 

 

« Une traduction n’est jamais neutre. Elle porte toujours une part d’interprétation, surtout dans des affaires sensibles comme celle-ci », explique un traducteur assermenté au tribunal.

 

 

 

 

Pour mieux comprendre, imaginons une expression populaire algérienne. Prononcée avec ironie ou dans un cadre humoristique, elle pourrait être mal interprétée si traduite littéralement. La défense d’Imadtintin argue que les vidéos, souvent tournées dans un style théâtral propre aux réseaux sociaux, relevaient davantage de la provocation verbale que d’un véritable appel à la violence.

 

 

 

 

Contexte clé : Les vidéos incriminées ont été publiées sur TikTok, une plateforme où l’exagération et l’humour sont monnaie courante. Mais dans un tribunal, ces nuances s’effacent souvent au profit d’une lecture littérale.

 

 

 

 

Réseaux Sociaux : Une Arme à Double Tranchant

 

Les réseaux sociaux, comme TikTok, amplifient les voix, mais ils amplifient aussi les malentendus. Imadtintin, avec ses milliers d’abonnés, s’est bâti une notoriété en publiant des contenus parfois polémiques, souvent dans un registre émotionnel. Mais ce qui peut passer pour une performance sur une plateforme peut devenir une preuve accablante dans un cadre judiciaire.

 

 

 

 

Le cas d’Imadtintin illustre un phénomène plus large : la responsabilité des influenceurs dans un monde hyperconnecté. Une vidéo de quelques secondes peut être vue, partagée, et reinterpretée par des millions de personnes. Dans ce procès, les juges doivent non seulement évaluer les propos tenus, mais aussi leur portée réelle. Les abonnés d’Imadtintin ont-ils perçu ses vidéos comme un appel à l’action ou comme une simple provocation ?

 

 

 

 

Portée des vidéos : Des milliers de vues, mais une audience principalement jeune, habituée aux codes de TikTok.

 

Contexte politique : Les tensions entre la France et l’Algérie influencent la perception des propos.

 

Rôle des sous-titres : Une traduction non officielle peut transformer un message.

 

Un Contexte Politique Chargé

 

L’affaire Imadtintin ne peut être dissociée du contexte diplomatique tendu entre la France et l’Algérie. Les relations entre les deux pays, marquées par des décennies de crises et de gestes d’apaisement, influencent ce procès. Les accusations portées contre l’influenceur s’inscrivent dans un climat où chaque mot peut être perçu comme un acte politique. Les opposants au régime algérien, comme l’activiste à l’origine de la dénonciation, sont souvent sous pression, ce qui ajoute une couche de complexité à l’affaire.

 

 

 

 

Certains observateurs estiment que ce procès reflète une volonté de contrôler les discours en ligne, notamment ceux émanant de la diaspora algérienne. Mais pour d’autres, il s’agit avant tout de protéger l’ordre public face à des discours potentiellement dangereux.

La Justice Face à un Dilemme

Les mots, amplifiés par les algorithmes, peuvent traverser les frontières et alimenter des conflits.

 

 

 

 

En Algérie, le régime surveille de près les discours des exilés. En France, les autorités doivent jongler entre la protection de la liberté d’expression et la prévention des discours de haine. Le procès d’Imadtintin illustre ce délicat équilibre.

"Can a digital platform save a language from fading away?

A recent study by Phenyo Mokgothu, a master's graduate and communication practitioner with the North-West University (NWU), has shown that digital community newspapers can indeed preserve language and culture, even in the shifting landscape of online media.

"Every issue is published in an indigenous language, it’s not just about news; it’s about preserving local indigenous language," says Mokgothu, who led a study examining the role of digital community newspapers in safeguarding indigenous languages and cultural heritage in South Africa.

Mokgothu’s research, titled “The role of digital community newspapers in indigenous languages and culture preservation: The case of Seipone Madireng”, found that digital community newspapers do more than report local stories; they serve as cultural anchors for their readers. "We wanted to understand how users see the role of this platform. They told us it reflects their daily experiences and traditions in a way that national outlets do not," Mokgothu says.

The study also revealed that community newspapers promote cultural preservation through active community engagement, bilingual advertising and educational initiatives. "Publishing advertisements in both English and the indigenous language bridges cultural gaps and ensures inclusivity," Mokgothu adds. The research highlighted that this approach not only strengthens community bonds but also promotes pride in linguistic heritage...

However, Mokgothu’s findings also pointed to significant challenges faced by community newspapers, including limited financial support, weak digital infrastructure and minimal visibility in mainstream media. Accessibility issues and the imbalance between cultural preservation and technological adaptation were also noted. Despite these barriers, Mokgothu remains optimistic. "There is a clear link between digital access and cultural survival. Community media must be part of future language strategies," he says.

To overcome these obstacles, the study recommends investing in digital literacy programmes to equip indigenous communities with the necessary digital skills, enhancing community engagement through regular feedback, and collaborating with government bodies, cultural organisations and educational institutions for financial sustainability. According to Mokgothu, such collaborations could provide critical funding and resources to support digital community newspapers...

The findings suggest that sustaining indigenous languages in the digital age demands more than community effort; it requires broader investment and strategic support.

"NCAC: National Language Policy Development Takes Shape with Focus on Minority Languages

As part of its mandate as the National Focal Point for National Languages, the National Centre for Arts and Culture (NCAC) on Tuesday, 20th May 2025, convened a daylong stakeholder workshop focused on the role, contributions, and expectations of minority languages within the emerging National Language Policy.

The workshop, held at the NCAC’s RDD Annex along Kairaba Avenue, was supported by the African Union’s Academy of Languages (ACALAN) and brought together a diverse group of academic and cultural stakeholders.

Key issues discussed included the expectations from a National Language Policy, the potential contributions of minority languages to enrich such a policy, and the challenges and threats facing these languages, challenges the policy aims to address. The forum provided a platform to strategize on the valorization, preservation, and promotion of The Gambia’s national languages.

In his opening remarks, NCAC Director General Hassoum Ceesay commended the participants for their strong response to the centre’s invitation, describing it as a clear sign of their commitment to shaping a National Language Policy Document by mid-2025.

DG Ceesay highlighted that the development of the National Language Policy is funded by ACALAN, a specialized agency of the African Union responsible for the implementation of the Language Plan of Action for Africa (LPAA).

He emphasized that the policy should be inclusive and empowering, reflecting the linguistic diversity of The Gambia.

“Our national languages are rich and hold significant potential for national development. Unfortunately, they remain underutilized. This policy will explore ways to empower, promote, and preserve them,” he stated.

Since the program’s inception in The Gambia in 2023, the NCAC has conducted several activities to raise awareness and advance the drafting of the policy. These include training sessions, sensitization workshops, and creative initiatives such as commissioning a kora maestro to compose a song celebrating national languages.

Speaking at the forum, Mr. Nana Grey-Johnson of the University of The Gambia described the workshop as timely and significant, noting that the eventual National Language Policy will be a major milestone in the country’s cultural and linguistic development.

“This initiative deserves commendation,” he added, thanking the NCAC for taking on the responsibility of coordinating the project on behalf of ACALAN."

"Déclaration : Pour une politique linguistique inclusive, gage de la cohésion nationale et de la diversité culturelle en Mauritanie

 

La Coordination des Associations culturelles de langues a exprimé dans une déclaration rendue publique ce vendredi 23 mai 2025, sa vive préoccupation face au débat qui agite depuis quelque temps l’opinion nationale, à propos du statut des langues en Mauritanie.

 

Composée de l’Association pour la Renaissance du Pulaar en Mauritanie (ARPRIM), de l’Association Mauritanienne pour la Promotion de la Langue et de la Culture Sooninke (AMPLCS), et de l’Association pour la Promotion de la Langue Wolof (APROLAWO), la coordination a appelé entre autres dans sa déclation dont ci-après l'intégralité, à l’officialisation effective du pulaar, du sooninke et du wolof, par une loi claire définissant leurs rôles, leurs domaines d’usage et les mécanismes concrets de mise en œuvre.

 

"La Coordination des Associations culturelles de langues — composée de l’Association pour la Renaissance du Pulaar en Mauritanie (ARPRIM), de l’Association Mauritanienne pour la Promotion de la Langue et de la Culture Sooninke (AMPLCS), et de l’Association pour la Promotion de la Langue Wolof (APROLAWO) — exprime sa vive préoccupation face au débat qui agite depuis quelque temps l’opinion nationale, à propos du statut des langues en Mauritanie.

 

En effet, certaines prises de position et revendications risquent plutôt de porter atteinte aux droits culturels et linguistiques d’une partie importante de Mauritaniens. Elles pourraient ainsi fragiliser davantage la cohésion sociale d’un pays historiquement riche de sa diversité linguistique et culturelle.

 

En plus, ces positions exclusivistes vont à l’encontre de l’esprit de la Constitution mauritanienne et des engagements internationaux pris par notre pays, notamment :

 

la Convention de l’UNESCO de 2005 sur la protection et la promotion de la diversité des expressions culturelles, qui invite les États à favoriser le multilinguisme et à garantir l’accès à la langue des communautés dans les domaines de l’éducation, des médias et de l’administration.

le Pacte international relatif aux droits civils et politiques (article 27), qui reconnaît aux communautés linguistiques le droit d’« utiliser leur propre langue ».

la Charte africaine des droits de l’homme et des peuples (article 17), qui garantit à chaque peuple le droit à sa culture, à sa langue et à leur promotion.

Face à ce débat, qui pourrait engendrer des interprétations et confusions regrettables, nous, Coordination des Associations culturelles de langues, appelons à une politique linguistique inclusive, fondée sur la reconnaissance égale de toutes les langues nationales, dans un esprit de justice, de respect mutuel et de dignité partagée. Concrètement, cela implique :

 

l’officialisation effective du pulaar, du sooninke et du wolof, par une loi claire définissant leurs rôles, leurs domaines d’usage et les mécanismes concrets de mise en œuvre.

la généralisation rapide de l’enseignement dans les langues nationales à l’école fondamentale, comme recommandé lors des évaluations du BREDA/UNESCO en 1984, et par le ministère de l’Éducation nationale en 1988. Il s’agit là d’un levier essentiel pour une éducation de qualité, inclusive et équitable.

la promotion d’un multilinguisme équilibré, valorisant également les langues étrangères — notamment le français et l’anglais — comme outils de travail, d’apprentissage et d’ouverture sur le monde.

Nous sommes convaincus que la Mauritanie ne pourra bâtir une unité nationale durable qu’en respectant la dignité linguistique de toutes ses composantes. Officialiser l’ensemble des langues nationales, c’est affirmer en effet l’égale citoyenneté de tous les Mauritaniens.

 

La Coordination des Associations culturelles appelle donc à la mise en place d’une politique linguistique équitable, inclusive et progressiste, gage d’un avenir commun, de cohésion sociale et de paix durable.

"¿Cómo funciona la traducción literaria?

¿Es el traductor siempre un traidor?

Traidores o fieles, los traductores interpretan, consciente o inconscientemente, su visión del texto original. La ‘Odisea’ de Emily Wilson y el ‘Orlando’ de Jorge Luis Borges así lo representan.

Los traductores literarios, además de ser transmisores de un mensaje escrito en un idioma a otro distinto, son creadores. Esta creación surge de la interpretación que da un traductor al texto, que acaba presentándose como un texto nuevo en la lengua meta. ¿Hasta qué punto un traductor cambia una novela, un poema o una obra de teatro más allá de la cuestión idiomática? ¿Su interpretación puede cambiar el sentido y el significado del texto tal y como lo escribió el autor original?

 

Los traductores en España están considerados como autores por la actual Ley de Propiedad Intelectual. Es decir, son autores de una obra derivada del texto origen. Sin embargo, el rol del traductor como intérprete del texto ha dado lugar a muchas reflexiones, que a su vez han derivado en polémicas públicas.

 

La expresión traduttore, traditore (traductor, traidor) refleja el debate que se ha mantenido durante siglos. ¿El traductor es un traidor de la obra origen? ¿Es, o debe ser, fiel al texto? La idea del traduttore, traditore se remonta al principio de intraducibilidad, a la idea de que ningún texto se puede traducir del todo, sin poder hacer una equivalencia real entre un idioma A y un idioma B. También hace referencia a la fidelidad al texto origen, a que el autor es el único propietario del texto y el traductor es un mero reproductor de las palabras y el mensaje que transmite. ¿Existe acaso un punto medio?

 

La dicotomía intraducibilidad-fidelidad ha dado lugar a que el debate se abra a lectores de traducciones literarias. Umberto Eco expresó en el ensayo Decir casi lo mismo: la traducción como experiencia que «la traducción no debe ser más bonita que el original», sino que debe haber un límite en la libertad creativa. ¿Qué ocurre cuando la interpretación de un texto por parte de un traductor genera cierta polémica?

 

Jorge Luis Borges y su ‘Orlando’

Jorge Luis Borges tradujo a autores como Edgar Allan Poe, Franz Kafka, Walt Whitman, Herman Melville, Virginia Woolf, Oscar Wilde y William Faulker. En el texto de no ficción «Siete noches», Borges presentó su visión sobre la traducción: «(…) comprendí que las traducciones no pueden ser un sucedáneo del texto original. La traducción puede ser, en todo caso, un medio y un estímulo para acercar al lector al original; sobre todo, en el caso del español».

 

La polémica de la traducción de Jorge Luis Borges de Orlando de Virginia Woolf resurge cuando se veta en España en 2023 una obra de teatro sobre la novela. Tras este veto, se develaron ciertas cuestiones éticas de su traducción. Según la traductora e investigadora Itziar Hernández Rodilla, que ha traducido gran parte de la obra narrativa y ensayística de Woolf (como Un cuarto propio, Las olas u Orlando. Una biografía), una traducción de Borges tal vez no pasaría una prueba editorial porque están marcadas por gestos de extrema visibilidad. Para Borges, «el original es infiel a la traducción», pero en su versión, para «mejorar el estilo», eliminaba la sintaxis fragmentada y la indeterminación del sujeto intencionales de la autora, además de prescindir del humor de Virginia Woolf.

 

Emily Wilson: la traducción contemporánea de la ‘Odisea’

Emily Wilson es filóloga clásica, pero destaca por ser traductora de la Odisea y la Ilíada de Homero al inglés. Su traducción de la Odisea coincide con el número de versos del original griego y está escrita en pentámetros yámbicos, con un lenguaje claro y accesible que se leyera en voz alta. Fue la primera mujer en traducir el poema épico al inglés: la primera vez que se publicó en este idioma fue en 1615.

 

En su Odisea, Wilson optó por traducir el término griego douloi no como «sirvientes», sino como «esclavos», para resaltar las relaciones de poder que presentaba Homero. También fue consciente de las elecciones de términos de otros traductores, que utilizaban un lenguaje misógino cuya connotación no estaba presente en la Odisea original. Se trata de un ejercicio de retraducción consciente, aunque varios críticos como Janey Tracey declararon que su traducción se contextualiza en el ambiente político actual.

 

El ejercicio de traducción de Wilson recuerda a la traducción y edición de José María Micó al español de la Comedia de Dante que publicó Acantilado. Micó lo explica en su «Nota sobre el texto y la traducción»: «El texto de los clásicos goza el privilegio de la perennidad pero que cada época requiere sus traducciones (…). La lengua de la traducción debe ser equivalente en lo posible a la lengua del autor, pero no a una lengua de época, para que el lector pueda sentir como contemporáneo a un gran poeta que vivió hace siete siglos».

 

La libertad creativa en el proceso de publicación

Emily Wilson y Borges representan dos formas distintas de abordar la cuestión de la libertad creativa en la traducción literaria. Wilson es transparente acerca de sus elecciones interpretativas, las justifica dentro del contexto de una nueva sensibilidad crítica de los lectores. Borges, en cambio, plasma en sus traducciones conscientemente su estilo como escritor.

 

En la actualidad, si comparamos las polémicas con la experiencia traductológica del mercado editorial en España, son anecdóticas: detrás del proceso de edición de un libro (independientemente del género literario) hay una cadena de profesionales, en la que cada uno forma parte de un engranaje complejo para que el libro quede lo más profesional posible, sin creaciones literarias extremas y manteniendo el mensaje del texto original. Si hay aspectos creativos en los que la decisión traductológica tiene un peso importante, se comentan y se deciden. Es decir, el traductor promedio no tiene la libertad que tuvo Borges para reescribir prácticamente Orlando de Virginia Woolf, aunque sí podría tenerla si justificara (y la editorial aceptase esas justificaciones) sus decisiones como lo hizo Emily Wilson."
