I recently had the privilege of interpreting for Chef Kurt Ramborger on the Food Network show Chopped. Every time I interpret for someone so talented and dedicated to pursuing their dreams, my own passion is reignited. My clients inspire me to do the best job I can do, and remind me why I became an ASL interpreter in the first place. I feel blessed with the perspective I gained growing up in a deaf family. I’ve never thought of deafness as a disability and, through my interpreting work, I have been able to expose many hearing individuals to the Deaf Culture that I know and love. Deaf people tell jokes, have parties, go to concerts, drive cars, work jobs, and watch TV. They attend classes, and go out to eat, and communicate on the phone (using a video phone or relay). As an interpreter, it’s interesting to note how many hearing people simply assume deaf people cannot enjoy things. That notion couldn’t be more misguided! As I. King Jordan famously said “Deaf people can do anything hearing people can do, except hear.”

Zendesk is bringing AI-powered, two-way translation to live contact center calls, letting customers and agents speak in their own languages without interpreters or dedicated language queues. The move goes after a real staffing bottleneck, but the real test is whether machine translation holds up on the calls where getting it right actually matters.

The News: Zendesk introduced Real-Time Voice Translation for Zendesk Contact Center on September 10, 2026, adding AI-powered, two-way translation to live calls so customers and agents can speak in the language that feels natural to them. Zendesk’s rationale centers on scale: voice still accounts for 40% of contact center volume, according to Zendesk research, and language gaps make those calls harder to staff and route. The company’s pitch is that businesses can offer voice support in more languages without hiring interpreters, building language-specific queues, or pushing customers with complex or urgent issues toward slower channels such as email or SMS.
Mechanically, agents can turn translation on or off mid-call, and administrators control which languages are available and whether the system retains the original audio, the translated audio, or both. That detail matters for compliance review as much as for quality control. The capability is built into existing Contact Center workflows rather than bolted on as a separate tool, so agents keep working the same queues and scripts. Per CX Today’s initial reporting, the feature launches supporting 13 languages: Chinese, English, French, German, Hindi, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, and Vietnamese. Real-Time Voice Translation becomes available in October 2026 through a closed Early Access Program for eligible Zendesk Contact Center Native customers.
Shashi Upadhyay, Zendesk’s President of Product, Engineering, and AI, framed the release around exactly this kind of call: “Customers should not have to choose between speaking the language that feels most natural to them and getting the support they need. When an issue is complex, sensitive, or urgent, people want to be understood, not routed somewhere else. Real-Time Voice Translation helps businesses make that kind of voice support available to more customers, while agents stay focused on solving the problem.”
Will Real-Time Voice Translation Solve the Contact Center’s Language Problem?
Analyst Take: Zendesk is going after a cost line every contact center leader can recite from memory: keeping enough multilingual agents on staff to match demand that shifts by region, time zone, and season. That is a staffing and economics problem before it is an AI problem, and it is the right one to target. Hiring a Portuguese-speaking agent to cover a queue that gets three calls a week is not a viable business decision, and the alternative — a queue transfer, a hold, or a shift to email for a customer who called because their issue was urgent — is a worse experience than an imperfect but immediate translation.
A Sensible Problem to Solve, With an Unproven Answer
The open question is quality. Real-time speech translation has to convey tone, urgency, and technical detail across languages in a live conversation, with no chance to pause and rephrase as a written chatbot exchange allows. Zendesk’s own framing (that this matters most when an issue is “complex, sensitive, or urgent”) describes precisely the calls where a mistranslated word carries the highest cost: a billing dispute, a safety complaint, a cancellation threat. Zendesk has not published accuracy data against these kinds of calls, and the feature’s value is unproven until it does.
Retention Controls Are Smart; Compliance is the Harder Question
Letting administrators choose whether to keep original audio, translated audio, or both is the correct design decision, and it signals that Zendesk built this with enterprise compliance teams in mind rather than as an afterthought. That same control previews a harder conversation still ahead. Call recording consent rules vary by state and country, and a translated recording raises questions about whose voice is recorded, what a regulator or a court treats as authoritative, and how long either version can be retained. Those questions fall to Zendesk’s customers, since compliance obligations rest with whoever deploys the feature in a given jurisdiction.
Language Coverage isn’t the Competitive Battlefield; Trust Is
Zendesk’s announcement landed the same week Genesys unveiled an AI Control Plane along with Navigator and Orchestrator tools aimed at coordinating AI agents, human employees, and workflow across the contact center. That is a bet on orchestration rather than on language coverage, and the contrast is the more useful lens on where this market is actually competing.
Verint’s State of Contact Center AI 2026 report found that 87% of contact center leaders plan to increase spending on automated agent assistance, and 94% of organizations believe AI has improved agent performance. Only 62% of consumers say they have noticed a positive impact. That 32-point gap is the number vendors should be working toward closing, and it will determine whether real-time voice translation is adopted as a trusted channel or quietly routed around by customers who would rather wait for a human who speaks their language.
What to Watch:
Whether Zendesk publishes accuracy or quality benchmarks against human interpreters, particularly on nuance, idiom, and emotionally charged conversations, once Early Access customers can speak to outcomes.

"English is taking up an increasingly prominent place in Algeria’s education system at the expense of French – a shift that has stirred controversy across the North African country.
This school year, three years after its introduction in primary school, English is becoming the first foreign language taught to pupils, starting from the third grade.
“We have decided to teach English in the third year of primary school, and French (alongside English) starting in the fourth year. In third year, only English will be taught,” announced the Algerian education minister in July.
Until 2023, French was the only foreign language taught in primary school, starting in third grade. This had been the case since Algeria’s independence in 1962. But following a decision by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, English – previously introduced only at secondary school level – was added, starting in the third year of primary school, alongside French.
Tebboune argued that English is the language of science and it is therefore important to teach it in school.
The place of English will also be strengthened in secondary school through an increase in teaching hours and a higher coefficient in the end‑of‑cycle exam.
In high school, French teaching has not yet been modified. But English will be further developed, the education minister said.
Although the government’s announcements are significant, teachers’ associations have not commented. The main teachers’ union, Cnapeste, was dissolved last July by the authorities for violating regulations on the right to strike. The union rejects the accusations, viewing the procedure as an attempt to neutralise an organisation known for its mobilisations.
In the past, Cnapeste had called the promotion of English teaching a hasty decision, arguing that teachers are not sufficiently trained to handle the subject.
On the contrary, the National Federation of Parents of Students Associations – which is generally aligned with the ministry’s position – expressed satisfaction with the reform, considering English “the language that gives access to science and technology, and therefore, ultimately, to better study and job prospects for pupils”.

Not all parents, however, agree. Rachida Mahi, a 36‑year‑old engineer living in Algiers, regrets a rushed decision that risks having a disastrous impact on children’s schooling.
She worries about the future of her son, who is starting third grade and will begin learning English this school year.
“How will the state manage to provide every school with qualified English teachers in sufficient numbers? Where does it plan to find them?” she told Middle East Eye.
Like many Algerians of her generation, Mahi speaks very little English.
“It was a secondary language in our schooling, unlike French. I did my engineering studies in French,” she said, adding that she is panicked at the idea of not being able to help her son with his English homework.
‘Improvised measures’
At the end of French colonisation in 1962, Arabic was established as Algeria’s national and official language. To definitively erase the colonial linguistic legacy, education was gradually Arabised. This policy reached its peak in 1991 with the adoption of a law generalising Arabic in all areas of public life and education.

At university, only law and social sciences were Arabised. Scientific fields such as medicine or engineering continued to be taught in French, due to the lack of suitable teaching resources and the shortage of teachers trained in Arabic. Further, leading scholarly journals are still largely accessible only in foreign languages – primarily French and English.
President Tebboune chose in 2025 to progressively replace French with English in medical studies, calling it a “wise” decision that would align Algerian higher education with international standards and global scientific research, where English dominates.
Salah Derradji, a specialist in language didactics and former university rector, is sceptical about the new measure. He told MEE that he has long supported the generalisation of English at university and its gradual introduction at other levels of education. But, he warned, “This project must be carried out thoughtfully. And that is not the case today.”
He argues that the Algerian president made “a political decision” and believes that it is impossible to apply such a measure overnight “with a magic wand”.
“You cannot train teachers in a few weeks and send them into classrooms. You first need qualified trainers,” he said, regretting the absence of broad consultation involving specialists.
Sharing his view, Rabeh Sebaa, former professor of sociology and anthropology at the University of Oran, tells MEE that “Algeria does not have the means to teach English – or teach in English – whether in schools or universities.”
In 2022, as it prepared to introduce English in primary school, the Algerian education ministry announced a major recruitment campaign for 60,000 teachers, targeting university graduates in English language and literature, as well as interpretation.

The operation, however, drew criticism from education unions, who denounced the recruitment of people without pedagogical experience and who were trained hastily.
“My daughter, who is entering secondary school this year, still does not express herself well in English,” Hamid Hani, a 42‑year‑old parent from Bejaia, told MEE. “She had the same English teacher for two years – a young woman, inexperienced and unable to manage a classroom.
“This teacher admitted to me during a meeting that she had to manage on her own to find teaching materials and organise her lessons.”
Furious, Hani accuses the authorities of playing with children’s futures by multiplying “improvised measures”.
Ahmed Tessa, an education specialist and author of a book on the status of French in Algerian schools, agrees.
“Honestly, how can one expect proper language teaching when you recruit university graduates and send them into classrooms without at least two years of initial training – the minimum needed to teach well,” he told MEE.
Tessa argues that the new measure is “an ideological rather than pedagogical decision”.
Rejection of French heritage
The government’s announcement has triggered a broader debate over the legacy of French colonialism and Algeria’s relationship with France.
El Hachemi Djaaboub is a former minister from the Movement of Society for Peace (MSP), an offshoot of the Muslim Brotherhood, and known for his critical stance towards French influence. He argued that postponing French teaching is an act of sovereignty and accused Tessa of serving foreign interests.
The downgrading of the language of Molière in Algerian schools comes amid persistent diplomatic tensions between Algeria and France, fuelled in 2024 by President Emmanuel Macron’s support for Morocco’s claim of sovereignty over Western Sahara. The former Spanish colony, largely controlled by Morocco, is also claimed by the Sahrawi independence‑seeking Polisario Front, which is backed by Algiers.

In France, some right‑wing and far‑right media have criticised Algiers’s decision to promote English, seeing it as an attempt to reduce the French cultural and political influence in the country.
In Algeria, social‑media conversations suggest that part of the population now regards French as a colonial leftover to be cast aside. Some even call for the complete suppression of French teaching.
For Abderrazak Makri, former president of the MSP, the change must be radical.
“We must put an end to France’s colonial legacy. Even President Macron speaks more English than French abroad. Today, English is the universal language; it is time for Algerians to adopt it and align themselves with great nations,” he said in 2022.
A few political parties, such as the Rally for Culture and Democracy and the Workers’ Party, are, by contrast, opposed to downgrading French, arguing that language teaching should be complementary and kept away from ideological quarrels.
Analysing positions hostile to the presence of French in education, Sebaa speaks of “visceral, ideologically driven postures”.
“Some of their promoters studied in English-speaking universities and consider English an international language, whereas French symbolises colonial domination,” he told MEE.
Author of a book analysing Algerians’ relationship with French, the sociologist rejects the notion that colonial schooling significantly contributed to the “francisation” of Algerians, whether culturally or linguistically. At the time, he noted, only a small share of Algerian children were in school – less than 20 percent at the time of independence.
Sebaa added that Algerians who lived under colonial rule saw French rather as a means of social advancement and cultural promotion. He pointed to the emergence, at the time, of Algerian literature written in French as evidence. One of its most emblematic figures, Kateb Yacine, famously described French as “a war booty”.
According to Tessa, this heritage is now threatened. He warns that downgrading French will have harmful consequences in many respects. He particularly fears a drying‑up of cultural production in French and an erasure of collective memory expressed in this language.
The educator also warns of Algeria’s distancing from its francophone geopolitical environment and a rupture with millions of children and grandchildren of the diaspora, living mostly in France and Quebec.
Currently, according to the International Organisation of La Francophonie, Algeria is the third‑largest francophone country in the world, behind France and the Democratic Republic of Congo. About 15.6 million Algerians reportedly speak French – about 33 percent of the population."

When Sara Ramirez started as an interpreter for Monterey, California-based LanguageLine Solutions, in October 2020, she saw it as “a regular company.” She worked part-time as a Spanish-language interpreter from her home in El Paso, Texas, translating by phone for clients that included the Federal Emergency Management Agency, banks and hospitals. If she encountered a problem, she emailed her supervisor. If she still had questions, they talked on the phone.
Things began to change quickly after LanguageLine introduced a new AI workforce management program in 2025, Ramirez said. Before, she had her break midway through her five-hour shift. Now it moved around, seemingly at random. Entire shifts were eliminated from her schedule with little notice. The workload also increased, giving her as few as 15 seconds between calls during busy hours, when previously she had a few minutes.
The AI program, called NiCE and made by an Israeli-American company with the same name, promises employers it will create “a more agile, efficient, and human workforce.” For many of the workers themselves, however, the experience has been negative. “NiCE is supposed to optimize the perfect workload,” said Karolina Yermak, a Russian interpreter at LanguageLine. “But you get the workload of two instead of one, without enough time to even take a sip of water between calls.”
Interpreters are often listed among the workers at the highest risk of replacement by AI. But interviews with a half dozen LanguageLine employees reveal a different phenomenon: AI is not so much eliminating as eroding the quality of their work. In a recent survey of 161 workers conducted by the Communication Workers of America, who are seeking to unionize the interpreters, a majority of LanguageLine workers reported high levels of burnout, insufficient time between calls and frequent back and neck pain.
“No matter how hard you try to stay sharp, you lose it, because there is only so much you can take,” said Yermak about the pace of work needed to meet AI metrics set by LanguageLine. “By the end of the day, your brain is so fried that you make mistakes. The intensity leads to massive burnout.”
A LanguageLine spokesperson who declined to be named said in an email that the rollout of AI software to forecast volume and create schedules had landed during a difficult stretch for the industry, and they have since adjusted and operations are “back to normal.” The spokesperson attributed workers’ complaints about erratic schedules primarily to federal budget cuts that have strained the resources of their clients, as well as an immigration crackdown that has left many immigrants afraid to access services.
“We acknowledge and regret the disruptions our interpreters have experienced and we deeply appreciate their patience and commitment,” the spokesperson wrote in a statement.

LanguageLine Solutions grew out of a project launched in 1982 by a San Jose police officer struggling to communicate with the city’s Vietnamese refugee population and a former U.S. Marine who had served as an interpreter in Vietnam. Today, that volunteer initiative has become the largest interpretive services company in the world, with particularly rapid growth during the last decade. Since LanguageLine was purchased in 2016 by France-based Teleperformance, the number of interpreters at the company has grown from 8,000 to 24,000, including nearly 3,000 U.S.-based employees whom Communication Workers of America is seeking to organize.
In 2025, the company reported $1.1 billion in revenue and a client list that includes hospitals, government agencies, schools, immigration courts and private companies. Many of the situations in which interpreters work are highly charged, demanding nuance, judgment and precision. One call could be for an immigrant seeking asylum, another for a patient receiving a sensitive medical diagnosis, a third for a frantic individual calling 911.
Even before its deployment of AI management software in 2025, LanguageLine faced scrutiny for its treatment of employees. In 2015, an investigation by the U.S. Department of Labor found that the company owed interpreters $1.47 million after failing to properly pay overtime and prevailing wage rates. And last year, the company settled a class action lawsuit for $3.725 million brought by interpreters who alleged that the company failed to pay minimum and overtime wages. (The settlement did not include an admission of wrongdoing by LanguageLine.)

Low wages remain a concern for interpreters. The LanguageLine spokesperson told Capital & Main that the average hourly wage of a full-time interpreter in the U.S. exceeded $20 an hour, but four LanguageLine workers with the highest possible level of certification told Capital & Main they earn less than $20 an hour.
It’s the working conditions, however, that have driven many interpreters to join the union drive. The introduction of NiCE, the AI-powered workforce software, has led to forced time off with little notice, workers said. “Sometimes they cut my hours, sometimes a full day,” said Aizo Nokes, a Spanish-language interpreter in Florida. “Reduced hours means a reduced paycheck and reduced security,” she added.
Interpreters have also found their breaks between shifts moving around, seemingly at random. “They say it’s AI powered, and you can see that,” said Yermak. “It cuts up your shifts into strange, pointless segments that aren’t convenient for any live human being.” Instead of evenly spaced breaks, she said, she could have a lunch break and then another break just 45 minutes later.

Many interpreters also reported that the introduction of the AI management system had increased the number of calls they typically receive in a shift. Before, they usually had several minutes between calls, but the minimum time between calls had now been shortened to 15 seconds.
“It’s like they flipped a switch for me,” said Agnieszka Lamirowska, a Polish interpreter who had been with the company for a decade before being fired in August due to what she said the company identified as “performance issues.” She said her call volume has more than doubled in the past year, up to 50 calls a day, and she received a deluge of alerts when she wasn’t meeting her goals. (LanguageLine said that from January to June of 2026, the median time between calls for U.S. interpreters was 2 minutes and 15 seconds and the average time was 5 minutes and 43 seconds.)
The implementation of NiCE, according to workers, had also led to more intense surveillance of their calls with clients based on metrics they did not fully understand. Interpreters said they could be penalized for situations they couldn’t control, such as having a call dropped due to faulty company equipment or having a client hang up before they could say their closing remarks. “You wake up in the morning and you don’t want to log in, because your stomach hurts,” said Nonése Kissane, a Haitian Creole interpreter in Florida. “The stress is too much.”

Interpreters at LanguageLine expressed some optimism that AI would not replace them entirely. One factor in their favor: Customers want to talk to people. “At the beginning of calls, I’ve had people ask me, ‘Are you a robot? Are you a recording?’” said Ramirez. Customers are relieved to learn she’s human.
Madhurima Ganguly, a Bengali video interpreter in Michigan who mostly takes hospital calls, described the relief her bewildered clients express when she greets the patient in their native language. “You have to understand that I’m the person they connect with,” she said. “I am their sister.” Ganguly absorbs their anguish, too. She recounted interpreting for parents of a child in the neonatal intensive care unit who were learning their baby might not survive. “It’s heavy, very heavy,” she said, close to tears. “The nuances, the emotions, the empathy that we humans have for one another … that will be there for eternity. No amount of AI can ever do that.”
A second factor may also protect the jobs of LanguageLine interpreters: the potential legal risk to the company and their clients of an overreliance on AI. LanguageLine interpreters work in situations — like immigration court, emergency rooms or 911 dispatch calls — where even small errors can have outsized consequences. Full-fledged AI hallucinations could have disastrous consequences, interpreters said.

The centrality of humans to interpretation is a point on which LanguageLine’s senior management agrees with workers. In January, Simon Yoxon-Grant, the CEO of LanguageLine, wrote in a company blog post that, even in the age of AI, humans “bring judgment, cultural nuance, and the ability to navigate what cannot be reduced to patterns.” AI did not “diminish the human role” in interpretation, he wrote, but rather “elevated it by handling the mechanical so people could focus on the meaningful.”
Last year, the company announced on its website that, as AI interpretation had improved, it was introducing a pilot program that routed less complicated calls to AI interpreters, thereby “freeing up human interpreters for more demanding work.”
According to Lauren McFerran, former chair of the National Labor Relations Board and currently the executive director of the AFL-CIO Tech Institute, which analyzes the impact of new technologies on workers, this illustrates a broader pattern: What management perceives as increased efficiency, workers experience as intensification. As less emotionally and cognitively taxing calls are handled by AI, the more difficult work is left to humans.
“This is often a selling point,” said McFerran. “We’re going to delegate the easier tasks to this technology. It may be very efficient and productive from the employer’s perspective, but the workers’ lived experience with only doing the very hardest parts of their job in an intensely monitored fashion is a very different side of that story.”
At LanguageLine, the new AI pilot service provides interpretation in more than 10 languages to handle “high volume, low risk” situations, though the company spokesperson said that the pilot was small and that it was not designed to replace interpreter jobs. Multiple interpreters reported that they had already seen a decrease in some simpler calls, like setting up appointments or telling patients a refill was ready.

In April, the LanguageLine interpreters’ union drive received the backing of numerous New York City officials, including Comptroller Mark Levine, at a press conference held at City Hall. Workers have also formed an employee health and safety committee, and in July a delegation traveled to the company’s Monterey headquarters, asking for a meeting with management. To date, the company has not agreed to meet collectively with the workers.
One motive for the unionization drive is the workers’ desire to shape their working conditions, including how and where AI is used. “No one asked us about NiCE,” said Kissane. “They told us what they were doing and we had to figure it out.”
For interpreters like Kissane, workers, not AI or managers, are the ones who know what conditions they need to do their work. “Let us take breaks when we need a break,” she said. “We know when our back hurts. We know when we need a walk. We know when a call is so deep that we can’t take another one.”"

“Machine translation is still broken for most of the world’s languages”: Cohere builds non-reasoning for a reason
Cohere's North Small Translate beats DeepL and Google Translate on WMT26 across 50 languages — but commercial use requires a Model Vault license.
Developers can download the weights for noncommercial use under CC BY-NC 4.0. Cohere offers commercially licensed deployment through Model Vault, which is a Cohere-managed inference environment. Cohere positions the model as part of its sovereign AI strategy, aimed at organizations that want greater control over where their models run and how their data is handled.
North Small Translate builds on Cohere’s multilingual and translation lineage, which includes its Tiny Aya and Command A Translate model families. The company claims North Small Translate outperforms “similarly sized open-weight models” under 1T parameters, as well as API-based translation models in various dimensions of machine translation on average.
Cohere co-founder Nick Frosst tells The New Stack that the model’s efficiency draws from the fact that it is non-reasoning, i.e., it relies on learned statistical patterns without a step-by-step logic process, which means it uses fewer tokens.

“We spent nine years scaling an architecture invented to fix translation, and machine translation is still broken for most of the world’s languages,” Frosst says. “General-purpose models get you most of the way and then stop. The next phase of enterprise AI in this space is smaller, more specialized, and runs inside your own walls.”

In Cohere’s reported evaluation using WMT26 benchmarks, the company states that North Small Translate leads with a WMT26 All Languages benchmark score of 83.60, compared with 81.56 for Qwen 3.5 397B A17B, 76.50 for GLM 5.2 FP8, 81.37 for DeepL NextGen, 79.46 for Gemma 4 31B (on), and 68.20 for Google Translate.
With its mixture-of-experts architecture and 218 billion total parameters, with 25 billion active. Cohere points to North Small Translate’s smaller compute & memory footprint than other models. Some model-to-model comparisons in this space aren’t fully substantiable, since not every vendor discloses parameter counts.

“Machine translation allows documents to be translated from one language to another automatically. With current solutions, long documents start to fall apart,” Frosst says. “Google Translate scores 21.3 on our long-context test, Gemma 4 31B 19.4; we score 48.9. That’s [for example] a safety manual that reads fine on page one… and has drifted by page ten. The other risk is where the text goes. Once you push HR policies or regulated documents through a third-party API, that data has left your building, and necessarily that means your control over it is diminished.”

Explaining why the model offers “stronger translation performance” across complex enterprise translation tasks, Frosst says the model can support work spanning “a high volume” of sensitive documents.
As well as its 50 languages (32 ‘high-resource’ languages + 18 others), the Cohere team explains that the model also supports translation-workflow-focused capabilities, such as structured translations (i.e., Markdown or JSON documents), instruction following (i.e., recommended tone & format), and terminology guides (i.e., providing specific vocabulary to use in the translation), all as part of the model.
“North Small Translate works with a multi-pass workflow,” explains Frosst. “The model translates, reviews its own output, finds errors, and fixes them – and this is the same loop we used in training. We ship both because standard is one pass and built for volume, while the agentic [version] spends more tokens for 84.36 against 83.60 on WMT26. That difference ends up being worth it when the document is a contract or a safety procedure, for instance, but in other cases you’d rather optimize for efficiency.”

Model ‘steerability’ drives suggesting language tone and formatting
This model uses the same architecture as prior Cohere models but improves performance through post-training advances, including reinforcement learning and new datasets, specifically for machine translation tasks.
Frosst concludes that, across the translation model marketplace, generative machine translation models offer the highest quality and steerability (i.e., suggesting tone, formatting, etc.) but typically cost much more than Neural Machine Translation (NMT) models commonly used in commercial use cases.
North Small Translate was developed in partnership with RWS, an AI solutions company pioneering in language technology and services. Collaboration with RWS, specifically with its Language Weaver research and science teams along with its language experts, helped shape the model’s real-world translation performance throughout development.
As noted above, developers can access the weights free of charge for non-commercial use in three quantizations. There is also a Hugging Face Space and an API for those who lack the required hardware. "

"Booker-winning translator Deepa Bhasthi on why she has ‘nothing kind to say about AI’
Bhasthi discusses preserving the soul, musicality and rhythm of a language, and why a translation should not erase its cultural roots.
International Booker Prize-winning translator Deepa Bhasthi is in Kathmandu as one of the mentors at a three-day literary translation workshop at Kathmandu University’s Dhulikhel campus.
The workshop, organised jointly by Kathmandu University’s Department of Languages and Mass Communication and the University of Chicago’s South Asian Literature in Translation (SALT), brought together writers and translators working with Nepali, Maithili, Tibetan and Nepal Bhasa.
Bhasthi became the first Indian translator to win the International Booker Prize in 2025 for her translation of Banu Mushtaq’s ‘Heart Lamp’, a collection of 12 short stories written over more than 30 years that chronicle the everyday lives and struggles of women in southern India.
In this conversation with Post’s Anish Ghimire, she talks about why a translation should retain the ‘soul’ and rhythm of its original language, the importance of reading more South Asian literature, and why she has ‘nothing kind to say about AI’.
‘Heart Lamp’ became the first collection translated from Kannada to win the International Booker. What was particularly difficult about translating Mushtaq, not just linguistically, but culturally and emotionally?
Every translation project comes with its own challenges and constraints. The characters in Mushtaq’s stories are Muslim, but the problems they face are not restricted to the Muslim community. They are the experiences of women living under patriarchy around the world. That relatability is what made it easy for me to understand these characters.
Culturally, though, they were very different from my lived experiences, so I did a lot of research. I like to call it ‘method translation’ because I really tried to get into the culture to the best of my abilities. Obviously, it’s not possible to live like these characters, but I watched a lot of Urdu serials and films, and listened to Sufi-infused music to set the mood.
Emotionally, I’m not a very emotional reader. Reading is very different from reading as a potential translator of that work. I’m not very sentimental in that way. I see it as a story and as language, so you can’t let that affect you.
I don’t think it would make for a good translation if you approached something too emotionally. You have to step back from being a fan of the work and look at it from a much more critical perspective.
You speak about “translating with an accent” rather than making a text sound completely natural in English. What does an accent allow a translation to retain?
The soul of the original language—the soul, the musicality, the rhythm of that particular language.
Because, there is no such thing as standard English. I don’t think it even exists. Also, I don’t think that’s the point of translation at all. Otherwise, it just becomes a very clinical, very literal, very dry work without the essence.
You need a soul to have a life. Languages have these souls. Obviously, we can’t carry them over to another linguistic culture perfectly, but we can try to do so to the best of our ability.

Adding to that, what do you think should remain untranslated in a translation?
I don’t think there’s a one-rule-fits-all idea in translation. It depends on the project: what to retain, what to leave untranslated. I think it’s a word-by-word choice that one has to make: whether something should remain untranslated or be transliterated.
Who is the translator ultimately responsible to—the original writer, the original language, the reader, or the text itself? And what happens when those responsibilities conflict?
I think the conflict is always going to be there, especially in the case of Kannada and English. They are very different languages, with almost nothing in common, so the conflict will always exist. But again, I think some of the best literature exists within these conflicts.
I can’t really speak for all translators, but for me, I am always led by language. The language is important to me. I am not taken in by the fame of a writer.
For me, the question is: how best can I convey the linguistic culture of Kannada into English? That’s my area of interest.
Nepal has a rich literary tradition in Nepali and many other languages, but relatively little Nepali literature reaches international readers through translation. What do you think is required for more South Asian literatures to travel across linguistic borders, not just into English, but between each other?
There just have to be more translations.
We’ve always had a culture of translation in South Asia, if you want to look at it that way. Because we’re all thinking in two or three languages. We’re always translating between these languages, whether we’re at home, at work, or with friends. We speak different languages in our heads. We live in different languages.
As AI becomes increasingly capable of translating languages, what do you think it still struggles to understand about a literary text? And what might be lost when we allow a machine to make those choices for us?
I have nothing kind to say about AI.
I don’t think AI is anywhere close to being capable of translating literary fiction. When AI is capable of shedding tears over sorrow, laughing at a silly joke, and, you know, being human, then I’ll decide to worry.
If an AI produces a translation that readers cannot distinguish from a human translation, does it matter who translated the book?
That’s a very interesting question.
It might not matter to the person who is giving the prompt, but I think it is an insult to hundreds of thousands of years of human evolution. It is insulting to a person’s intelligence and critical-thinking abilities to take something a machine has produced and try to pass it off as something a human has done.
Am I completely against AI as a technology? Yes, for sure. Am I against it in creative fields? Oh my goodness, yes!
AI has its uses in some fields—science, medical science, and so on—so please use it to do whatever it can there.
But we don’t need this stupid ’80s social media trend, or to feed all these big tech companies at our expense. I mean, come on, at what cost? We are all seeing what is happening because of these big tech companies.
What do you think young translators worry about too much—and what should they be worrying about instead?
I don’t think young translators worry enough about critical thinking. Everyone is so geared towards doing everything quicker. I think translators don’t read enough. I always say you have to read more than you write, and listen more than you talk.
And we should read more South Asian literature. We’re very happy to read translations from French, Italian and German, which we should, but we also need to read stories from our own part of the world. That’s the only way we’ll have the confidence to tell the world, ‘Hey, our story is my favourite.’
Talking about books, can you give me your 3 quick book recommendations?
I’m currently reading ‘Brotherless Nights’ by V V Ganeshananthan, which is incredible.
Anything by Claire Keegan, especially ‘Foster’.
And thirdly, I’d recommend a Kannada book, ‘Karimayi’, written by Chandrashekhara Kambara and translated by Krishna Manavalli."

L'organisme Droits collectifs Québec poursuit son combat juridique pour obtenir la traduction de quelque 6 000 anciens jugements de la Cour suprême…
L’organisme Droits collectifs Québec (DCQ) et son directeur général, Étienne-Alexis Boucher, se tournent vers la Cour d’appel fédérale pour obliger la Cour suprême du Canada à traduire en français ses documents d'avant 1970. L'ancien député du Parti québécois et son organisme ont porté en appel, le 26 août, le jugement de première instance qui leur était défavorable. Ils estiment que la décision de la juge Denise A. LeBlanc est affectée par un certain nombre d’erreurs de droit et d’interprétation juridique déterminantes justifiant de faire appel, selon les documents transmis à Radio-Canada.
« On ne pense pas que c’est un bon jugement pour un pays bilingue », souligne Étienne-Alexis Boucher, directeur général de Droits collectifs Québec.
« On pense qu’on a des motifs raisonnables et pertinents de porter appel d’une décision qui, à nos yeux, non seulement ne respecte pas la jurisprudence établie - notamment par l’arrêt Beaulac, qui vise à interpréter de manière très large et généreuse les droits linguistiques, notamment ceux des francophones -, mais aussi parce qu’on ne voit pas comment ce jugement permet au Canada de tendre vers une égalité réelle entre tous ses citoyens, peu importe la langue officielle qu’ils parlent », explique M. Boucher en entrevue à Radio-Canada.
6000 décisions à traduire
DCQ et son directeur général souhaitent voir traduites en français quelque 6000 décisions rendues avant l'entrée en vigueur, en 1969, de la Loi sur les langues officielles (LLO). Avant cette loi, le plus haut tribunal du pays n'était pas tenu de publier ses jugements dans les deux langues officielles du Canada. La plupart de ses décisions étaient rendues en anglais, même lorsqu’il s’agissait de causes ayant rapport avec le Québec.
En juin dernier, la juge LeBlanc s'était rangée derrière les arguments du Bureau du registraire de la Cour Suprême du Canada. Elle avait conclu que les décisions historiques de la CSC ne constituent ni des services ni des communications au public soumises à l’obligation de traduction prévue par (...) la LLO. Selon la magistrate, l'obligation de respecter les deux langues officielles du Canada ne s'applique qu’au site web de la Cour suprême, et non pas au contenu des décisions à proprement parler.
Le Bureau du registraire est l'instance visée par la plainte, puisque la Cour suprême du Canada elle-même est protégée contre ce genre de recours en vertu du principe de l’indépendance des tribunaux. Invité à réagir, le Bureau a refusé de commenter le dossier comme il s’agit d’une affaire actuellement devant les tribunaux.
Des traductions, à quel coût?
La démarche judiciaire entreprise a déjà permis d'obtenir une victoire, souligne M. Boucher. En 2025, la Cour suprême du Canada s'est engagée, pour les 150 ans du tribunal, à traduire en français 24 des principaux jugements rendus avant 1970. Mais en ne traduisant pas l'ensemble des 6000 décisions, Droits collectifs Québec et M. Boucher estiment que la Cour suprême du Canada continue d'enfreindre la Loi sur les langues officielles, ce qu'avait aussi conclu le Commissaire aux langues officielles (CLO) dans deux rapports, en octobre 2021 et en septembre 2024. Par le passé, le juge en chef de la Cour suprême du Canada, Richard Wagner, avait toutefois affirmé qu'une telle opération serait beaucoup trop onéreuse.
De plus, selon lui, l'utilité de traduire ces décisions serait minime, la plupart d'entre elles n'ayant plus vraiment de portée dans le système juridique moderne. Deux arguments que conteste M. Boucher. Le manque de ressources (...) ce n’est pas une excuse pour brimer les droits fondamentaux. Plusieurs cours le disent à travers le Canada, dont la Cour suprême, souligne l'ancien député péquiste. Il rappelle également que de très nombreux jugements rendus avant 1969 font partie de la jurisprudence et sont encore cités par les parties qui veulent remporter des litiges devant les tribunaux.
« Ne serait-ce que pour permettre à la Cour (suprême du Canada) de donner l’exemple, (...) nous, on pense d’un nécessaire absolu que la Cour suprême procède à la traduction desdits jugements », mentionne Étienne-Alexis Boucher.
Pour lui, c'est une question d'égalité pour l'ensemble des juristes d'expression francophones de pouvoir disposer des mêmes outils, des mêmes avantages que leurs collègues anglophones. L'avocat Gabriel Poliquin devant la Faculté de droit de l'Université d'Ottawa.
Une déclaration que confirme l'avocat constitutionnaliste Gabriel Poliquin, qui est récemment intervenu dans l'affaire de la nomination de la lieutenante-gouverneure du Nouveau-Brunswick.
« Les seuls jugements qui étaient vraiment pertinents, c'étaient des jugements d'avant 1970, des jugements du Conseil privé en Angleterre (...) disponibles seulement en anglais », raconte celui qui est également le directeur du Programme de certification de common law en français de l'Université d'Ottawa.
Les appelants demandent que toutes ces décisions soient traduites dans un délai de 10 ans... ou plus si nécessaire.
« DCQ n’est pas dogmatique à un point tel qu’on imposerait à la Cour suprême un défi qui est insurmontable. (...) Je pense qu’on pourrait simplement pousser plus loin les travaux déjà entamés et faire une hiérarchie de ces travaux-là. Est-ce que ça pourrait prendre 10 ans, 15 ans, 20 ans? Ce que nous demandons, c’est un plan de match ».
Pour Me Poliquin, l'appel qui a été déposé est d'autant plus pertinent que plusieurs points restent à clarifier après le premier jugement.
« La question juridique, c'est une question vraiment de noir et blanc : soit il existe une obligation (de traduire), soit elle n'existe pas », mentionne Me Gabriel Poliquin, avocat constitutionnaliste Mais pour lui, même si la Cour d'appel fédérale donne tort aux appelants, un compromis pourrait encore être trouvé.
« On pourrait arriver à un compromis (...) sur le plan pratique d'au moins traduire les décisions qui sont d'intérêt public ».
L'audience devant la Cour d'appel fédérale devrait se tenir à Montréal à une date qui n'a pas encore été révélée."

Grâce à la dernière mise à jour de l'application Google Traduction pour iOS, les utilisateurs peuvent désormais porter leur iPhone à l' oreille pour écouter la traduction en temps réel via le haut-parleur, comme lors d'un appel téléphonique. Cette fonctionnalité évite d'avoir à diffuser la traduction à un volume élevé, ce qui peut s'avérer gênant dans les lieux publics. Auparavant, les utilisateurs devaient choisir entre écouter la traduction via le haut-parleur ou utiliser des écouteurs. Cette nouvelle fonctionnalité simplifie grandement l'utilisation de la traduction dans les environnements bruyants, la rendant plus discrète et pratique.
Améliorations Android : traduction en arrière-plan
Parallèlement aux mises à jour iOS, Google a également amélioré la version Android de Google Traduction. L'application prend désormais en charge le fonctionnement continu en arrière-plan tout en utilisant la traduction en temps réel. Ainsi, les utilisateurs peuvent passer à d'autres applications, comme Maps ou le navigateur, ou même verrouiller l'écran de leur téléphone, sans que la traduction ne soit interrompue. Auparavant, l'application Google Traduction devait rester active au premier plan pour garantir une traduction continue.

Estudiantes de una escuela técnica de la región metropolitana desarrollaron una aplicación de traducción de Lengua de Señas Argentina que acaba de obtener registro de propiedad intelectual y está siendo evaluada para implementación municipal. El proyecto, denominado Sign Language Translator (SLT), surgió como iniciativa de cuatro alumnos de la especialidad en Informática que dedicaron aproximadamente dieciocho meses al desarrollo bajo supervisión docente.
La aplicación aborda un problema estructural en la comunicación: las barreras que enfrentan personas sordas o hipoacúsicas que utilizan lengua de señas cuando interactúan con quienes no dominan este lenguaje. El sistema funciona mediante reconocimiento gestual en tiempo real, utilizando la cámara de dispositivos móviles o computadoras para identificar configuraciones de mano y asociarlas a significados específicos.
Arquitectura técnica y evolución del sistema
El desarrollo inicial utilizó Python con bibliotecas de visión computacional (MediaPipe y OpenCV) en una versión de escritorio que reconocía letras individuales. Esta aproximación requería que los usuarios deletrearan palabra por palabra, lo que limitaba su utilidad práctica. El equipo identificó esta restricción y reorientó el proyecto hacia el reconocimiento de palabras completas, implementando un sistema de normalización que toma la muñeca como punto de referencia. Esta técnica permite que la aplicación funcione independientemente de la distancia o el tamaño de la mano frente a la cámara, mejorando significativamente la precisión.

Living in Languages Explores Translation Across Literature, Culture and Identity

ALBANY, N.Y. (Sept. 10, 2026) — Translation is often understood as the act of carrying words from one language into another.
The newest volume of Living in Languages, an open-access, peer-reviewed journal invites readers to think more broadly about how translation can carry memory, identity, culture and meaning across languages.
Collaboratively managed by UAlbany’s Departments of English and Languages, Literatures and Cultures, and in collaboration with scholars from the University of Massachusetts Amherst and Westfield State University, Living in Languages’ 4th volume brings together translations of poetry and short fiction from Spanish, French, Chinese and Tamil.
The volume features critical essays on translation and Taiwanese divination, and translation’s role in Ursula K. Le Guin’s science fiction novel The Dispossessed.
Among the featured contributors is April Schmidt, a UAlbany alumna whose translation of Venezuelan poet Hanni Ossott’s “Del país de la pena” introduces English-language readers to one of Ossott’s major works.
Translating a Major Venezuelan Poet
Schmidt, who earned her PhD in Spanish from UAlbany in 2012, is now an instructor of World Languages at Jefferson Community College in Watertown. Her contribution to Living in Languages, “From the Land of Pain,” marks a return to the poet who shaped her doctoral research. Schmidt’s dissertation, Everything and Nothing: The Poetry of Hanni Ossott, examined the central themes of Ossott’s first six books of poetry.

Ossott, who lived from 1946 to 2002, is widely recognized in Venezuela but remains less familiar to many English-language readers. She wrote 10 books of poetry, won major Venezuelan poetry prizes and also published essays and translations.
“Hanni Ossott’s poetry tends to be rather philosophical and esoteric, and she has been called ‘a poet’s poet,’” Schmidt said. “But, when I was leafing through an anthology of her poetry for the first time, one of the poems that caught my attention was ‘La casa, ese depósito de ángeles’ — ‘Home, the angels’ depository.’ Some of the ideas in it reminded me of how I’d felt several years before, when we were leaving the house we had lived in for 20 years.”
In “Del país de la pena,” Ossott repeatedly asks, “Who am I?” For Schmidt, that question is part of what makes Ossott’s work important for new readers.
“I believe Ossott’s poetry is important because it often focuses on ideas and questions that tend to get lost amid the pressures and fast pace of modern life,” Schmidt said. “In ‘Del país de la pena,’ Ossott explores these questions, making us rethink something we usually take for granted: our own existence.”
Meaning Across Languages
For Schmidt, translating poetry means trying to recreate not only the literal meaning of a poem, but also the emotional and imaginative experience of encountering it.
“I often feel like the ideas and emotions expressed in poetry transcend language, existing outside of and beyond it,” Schmidt said. “The writers used one language to try to capture their thoughts and feelings, but I always feel that they are capable of being conveyed in another language as well, if I can only find the right words.”
Translation, according to English Associate Professor Aashish Kaul, “does more than carry or convey. It signals that a given line, sentence or phrase in the original can be rendered in more than one way, and the translator’s task is to understand not what the original means, but how it means.”
Associate Emerita Professor Helen Regueiro Elam added that translation “signals the rich densities of the original, and, ultimately, the way in which language, far from being a mere vehicle of transport, is constitutive of culture, is the force that allows and enables different modes of thinking and being.”
That broader understanding of translation runs throughout the new volume, where works of poetry, fiction and criticism use translation to explore identity, memory, belief, political struggle and belonging.
“This volume continues our conversation about translation as a multilingual engagement with various modes and genres,” said Rumi Coller-Takahashi, lecturer in UAlbany’s Writing and Critical Inquiry Program and co-editor of Living in Languages. “The works explore languages through the lens of a flowing sense of identity, surrealistic entanglement, the locus of divinity and revolutionary force.”
“Translation is such a deep and active engagement with languages. It is empowering, as it allows us to connect the self with the other, and even discover elements of the other in the self,” said Languages, Literatures and Cultures Chair and Associate Professor Ilka Kressner.

Localization to English, Spanish and French has been completed
"Magical Girl Witch Trials’ English, Spanish and French translations complete, developers ask for more patience as small team handles final work
Acacia, the creative team under Japanese game studio Re;AER, has published an update on the much-awaited global versions of its hit death game visual novel Magical Girl Witch Trials. The announcement was made via the team’s newly created “Acacia West” X account, which will presumably serve as an official channel of communication with international fans going forward.
The developers bring some exciting news – localization of the game’s script to English, Spanish and French has been completed. From here, the team will move onto in-game implementation, quality assurance, UI adjustments, and other related tasks. At the same time, Acacia warns that it’s working with a small development team and a limited number of dedicated programmers, so it’s still going to take some time before the devs are able to announce a release schedule.
The announcement also mentions that the translation teams worked closely together with the game developers to ensure a high-quality localization that will make players “feel the worst,” true to the game’s sadistic nature.
Acacia will provide a release schedule for Magical Girl Witch Trials’ international versions as soon as it is decided (it was previously tentatively announced for late 2026). In the meantime, the devs have shared work-in-progress screenshots of the game in English, Spanish and French.
Despite releasing exclusively in Japanese and Simplified Chinese, Magical Girl Witch Trials has already sold over 700,000 units as of August 31. The game currently holds an “Overwhelmingly Positive” rating on Steam out of over 34,000 reviews, so it’s not surprising that gamers are all but hounding Acacia for additional language support. Still, this project marks Re;AER’s first in-house localization effort, so the developers have asked for a little more patience.

Abstract
Translation technologies have changed the professional workflows in the translation industry, bringing cognitive and emotional demands to translators. We investigated the association between student translators’ emotional dynamics and their performance in technology-mediated translation. Sentiment analysis was adopted to analyze student translators’ positive, neutral and negative emotions, as well as the polarity and subjectivity of their responses during the project. Our findings showed that neutral emotions took the largest proportion, followed by positive emotions, with negative emotions accounting for the smallest proportion overall. Descriptive week-by-week analyses showed variations in emotions: positive emotions decreased during the mid to late stages with an increase in negative emotions, and positive emotions recovered by the end of the project. Last but not least, Bayesian Linear Regression analysis suggested a potential positive association between student-level sentiment and technology-mediated translation performance, with higher sentiment scores associated with better performance. The findings highlight the importance of considering emotional factors in translator training alongside technical skills, particularly in technology-mediated learning environments. Both may be relevant to their performance and professional development in the changing landscape of the translation industry."

Séquence hallucinante vendredi 4 septembre, en Angleterre, où Jordan Bardella a signé en compagnie du leader d’extrême droite anglais Nigel Farage un accord sur l’immigration qui prévoit, notamment, le renvoi vers la France de migrants interceptés dans les eaux britanniques. Le monde politique a glosé tout le week-end sur cette signature, dénoncée par tout le monde ou presque.
D’autant qu’un détail s’est glissé dans le protocole signé, comme l’a remarqué le journaliste Paul Larrouturou, sur X. Dans l’article 5 de l’accord, qui prévoit le renvoi en France des réfugiés interceptés, un passage a disparu entre la version anglaise et la version française, qui figurent pourtant côte à côte dans le document. «France will ordinarily accept these persons, who will be repatriated to their home country in accordance with the law in force in France concerning expulsion», peut-on lire dans la langue de Shakespeare.

Une poignée de main et une signature aux côtés de Nigel Farage(Nouvelle fenêtre), leader du parti d'extrême droite en Grande-Bretagne. Dans le très grand texte que les deux hommes tiennent pour la photo, Jordan Bardella s'engage à reprendre les migrants interceptés dans les eaux britanniques. Mais en regardant de plus près, nous avons repéré un petit problème de traduction, loin d'être anecdotique. Dans le texte en anglais comme en français, concernant les migrants, il est écrit que : "la France reconduira ces personnes vers leur pays d'origine." Mais dans la version anglaise, il existe une petite phrase en plus qui semble aller beaucoup plus loin : "La France acceptera en principe ces personnes." En anglais, Jordan Bardella s'engage donc à accepter le retour des migrants sur le territoire français.
Une décision surprenante pour des sympathisants du RN à Calais. "Je vous crois mais ça me paraît tellement fou", estime l'une d'elles, une autre lance : "Ah il veut les ramener ? Ah bah non, s'il faut les ramener non."
Une phrase absente de la version française
Pourquoi manque-t-il une phrase dans la version française ? Au RN, on évoque une volonté de rendre le texte plus lisible. Mais sur le fond, cela ressemble à un revirement. En 2021, Marine Le Pen voulait au contraire que ce soient les Britanniques qui gèrent les migrants arrivés dans leurs eaux territoriales. Invitée du Grand Jury sur RTL le 28 novembre 2021, elle déclarait : "Ce qu'il faudrait obtenir, c'est une modification des accords du Touquet pour que les Britanniques, lorsqu'ils sont confrontés à des clandestins qui sont arrivés en Grande-Bretagne, les renvoient dans leur pays d'origine plutôt que les renvoient en France."
Nous lui avons posé à nouveau la question ce lundi 7 septembre, ce à quoi elle nous répond : "J'en parlerai quand j'aurai décidé de le faire, c'est-à-dire sous peu."
Du côté du Rassemblement national, on écarte toute polémique et on rappelle que ce texte n'est qu'une déclaration d'intention à affiner par la suite."

Bénin : un recours contre la traduction de l’hymne en fongbé examiné ce jeudi
Cette adaptation comporte six couplets, contre trois dans la version française officielle
La Cour constitutionnelle examine ce jeudi 10 septembre 2026 à Cotonou le recours contestant la conformité à la Constitution de la version en fongbé de l’hymne national L’Aube Nouvelle. Le dossier, enregistré sous le numéro 1571/281/REC-24, a été introduit le 31 juillet 2024 par Thomas D. Dakpogan contre le garde des Sceaux, ministre de la Justice et de la Législation, ainsi que le gouvernement.
Un recours introduit en 2024
L’affaire figure au rôle de l’audience plénière de vacation prévue ce jeudi à 15 heures dans la salle des audiences publiques de la Cour constitutionnelle. Elle fait partie des onze dossiers inscrits à cette session.

Le document officiel de mise au rôle qualifie la procédure de recours en inconstitutionnalité visant la version fongbè de l’hymne national. Il ne précise toutefois pas les passages de la traduction contestés, les dispositions constitutionnelles invoquées par le requérant ni l’origine exacte de la version concernée. Ces éléments ne permettent donc pas, avant l’audience, de conclure à une éventuelle irrégularité de cette traduction.
Le gouvernement présente officiellement L’Aube Nouvelle comme l’hymne national du Bénin. L’œuvre a été écrite et composée par l’abbé Gilbert Jean Dagnon et adoptée en 1960, lors de l’indépendance du pays. Elle a été maintenue après le changement de dénomination du Dahomey en République populaire du Bénin en 1975, avec l’adaptation de certaines références dans le texte. InformationsBénin
Plusieurs versions en langues nationales
Le débat judiciaire porte sur une version en fongbé, mais l’existence de différentes interprétations de l’hymne dans les langues nationales n’est pas nouvelle.
Une traduction en fongbé est publiée par l’Institut pédagogique d’étude et de développement de l’écrit en fongbè (IPEDEF). Elle est attribuée à Innocent Kagbotemi et au père Barthélémy Adoukonou. Selon les informations publiées à ce sujet, cette adaptation comporte six couplets, contre trois dans la version française officielle.
Le site officiel du gouvernement reproduit actuellement les paroles françaises de L’Aube Nouvelle et ne permet pas d’identifier une traduction en fongbé comme version juridiquement officielle de l’hymne. Cette distinction est déterminante pour le contentieux : le rôle de la Cour mentionne une « version fongbè de l’hymne national », sans identifier davantage la traduction visée par le recours.
Une audience qui ne préjuge pas de la décision
L’inscription du dossier au rôle signifie que les juges constitutionnels vont examiner le recours. Elle ne permet pas d’affirmer qu’une décision définitive sera rendue ce jeudi.
La Cour constitutionnelle a déjà traité plusieurs contentieux portant sur des questions institutionnelles et des droits constitutionnels. Son registre officiel compte plus de 7 400 décisions répertoriées, dont plusieurs décisions rendues en 2026. Le dossier sur la version fongbè sera donc examiné avec dix autres affaires lors de l’audience plénière du 10 septembre. La décision de la juridiction permettra de connaître la position retenue sur la conformité constitutionnelle de la version visée par le recours."

"New study challenges the myth of “the lonely translator”
Marie Curie Research Fellow Raphael Sannholm is interested in the cognitive dimensions of translation. “Cognition is not just something that happens in our minds; it is manifested through interactions in real-life settings,” he notes.
Marie Curie Research Fellow Raphael Sannholm studies how institutional translators jointly process information through interaction. His ongoing research examines the work of EU translators and will result in the development of new theoretical models that can be applied to workplace studies. Sannholm also hopes that the findings will inform translator education and training.
Throughout the spring of 2026, Marie Curie Research Fellow Raphael Sannholm travelled back and forth between Tampere and Luxembourg, spending a total of six weeks observing the work of translators at the European Parliament. His goal was to examine the interactions between translators and, more specifically, the role of collaboration in the translation process.
Sannholm has now collected the majority of his research data. The material includes tens of hours of video recordings that mostly document virtual interaction, as translators spend much of their working day on their computers. It also includes recordings of face-to-face encounters as well as documents that translators use to share information.
Interviews with translators are scheduled for this autumn.
“That will be the final stage of the data collection. Although I have invited the translators to continue sharing materials from their digital interactions, such as recordings of Teams conversations, the bulk of my research data has now been collected,” says Sannholm.
Translator teams as distributed cognitive systems
Sannholm’s study, titled Translating Institutional Systems (TRAILS), examines how institutional translators work collaboratively to solve problems, make decisions, document and share information, and develop shared practices that support their work.
The study will provide new insights into the collaborative processes through which translations are produced to meet societal needs.
What brings a distinctive perspective to Sannholm’s research is his strong interest in cognition.
“I am interested in exploring how groups of people work together as distributed cognitive systems. My research approach is socio-cognitive,” he says.
During the TRAILS study, Sannholm will develop new theoretical models that can inform future workplace studies. He also hopes the findings will have implications for translator education and training.
“We have a stereotype of translators as solitary professionals. But what if we viewed translation as a collaborative activity? What would collaboration mean for translation, and how might collaborative practices be incorporated into the training of future translators?” he asks.

From private to public
Sannholm’s interest in interactions among translators stems from his own professional background as a translator. Before starting his doctoral research, he worked as an English-language translator in the private sector. It was during this time that he began to reflect on the translation profession and its social context.
His doctoral dissertation at Stockholm University examined interactions among translators working in the private sector. One of his key findings was that many of these interactions centred on colleagues working proactively together to address potential issues before they arose.
For his Marie Curie fellowship, Sannholm wanted to shift his focus to the public sector. Methodologically, he moved from observational research to the analysis of interactional data.
“I thought the EU would be a fruitful institution to study. I was especially intrigued by what happens in the moment-to-moment interactions between translators,” Sannholm says.

Sannholm is now halfway through his two-year Marie Curie Research Fellowship in the Faculty of Information Technology and Communication Sciences (ITC) at Tampere University.
Finland and Tampere have left a very positive impression on him.

Sannholm hopes to continue his current line of research beyond his postdoctoral fellowship, both methodologically and theoretically. He is especially interested in studying interactions in workplace settings.
Further research on translators working in the private sector is also an option.

"This presentation examines the relative absence of translation in scholarship on Black Canadian writing. While my focus is specifically on Black Canadian writers and translation, I situate this inquiry within the broader history of Black Canadian writing and the bibliographic and scholarly efforts that have documented its development, diversity, and significance. These efforts have challenged what Yvonne Brown describes as the “absent presence” of Blackness in Canada by documenting, recovering, and critically engaging with Black Canadian literary histories and contributions. Yet the question of translation remains largely absent from this discussion.
Against this background, I ask what happens when translation is brought into the picture. This preliminary inquiry maps existing scholarship and bibliographic records to identify translations and gaps, and considers what these presences and absences reveal about the circulation and visibility of Black Canadian writing in translation. By bringing translation into conversations about representation and literary recognition, the presentation seeks to open a space for further scholarly inquiry into the historical, institutional, and publishing conditions that shape the circulation of Black Canadian writing across languages and cultural contexts.

Why Language Access Demand is Rising
Demand is coming from every direction. Section 1557 of the Affordable Care Act prohibits national-origin discrimination by healthcare organizations that receive federal funding, and failing to serve a patient in a language they understand can fall within that prohibition. La République démocratique du Congo compte au moins 23 millions de personnes ne sachant ni lire ni écrire, soit un taux d’analphabétisme de près de 20 %, selon les chiffres présentés mardi 8 septembre 2025 par la ministre d’État en charge des Affaires sociales, Ève Bazaiba.
Elle s’exprimait à l’occasion de la 60e édition de la Journée mondiale de l’alphabétisation, célébrée autour du thème : « Alphabétisation pour le peuple, la planète et la prospérité ».
Les conflits et les crises affectent l’accès à l’éducation
Selon le gouvernement, cette situation est notamment liée à la persistance des conflits armés, aux crises épidémiques et aux chocs climatiques, qui provoquent des déplacements massifs de populations.
Dans sa déclaration, Ève Bazaiba a souligné les conséquences de ces déplacements sur l’accès à l’éducation.
« Arrachées de leur cadre de vie habituel, les personnes déplacées internes et les réfugiés subissent des conditions d’existence particulièrement précaires qui compromettent durablement leur accès à l’éducation. »
Les personnes déplacées et les réfugiés font ainsi partie des populations particulièrement exposées aux difficultés d’accès à la scolarisation et aux programmes d’alphabétisation.
Des programmes de rattrapage et de formation
Pour répondre à cette situation, le gouvernement indique avoir engagé plusieurs actions avec les acteurs du secteur. Elles portent notamment sur l’actualisation et le renforcement des programmes de rattrapage scolaire et d’alphabétisation.
L’exécutif prévoit également la production de supports pédagogiques et andragogiques ainsi que la professionnalisation des éducateurs sociaux.
Le développement des compétences professionnelles et la recherche de solutions adaptées aux besoins des populations vulnérables figurent également parmi les mesures annoncées.

Avec la traduction, le dispositif franchit une étape autrement sensible. GoRead décrit une succession d’agents : première version, traitement séparé des noms, lieux et expressions locales, reprise des formulations signalées comme incertaines, révision linguistique, puis arbitrage contextuel.
"Trois mille couronnes suédoises — environ 270 € — pour faire passer un roman de 80.000 mots dans une autre langue. GoRead, la plateforme d’autoédition cofondée par Jonas Tellander, cofondateur de Storytel, ajoute la traduction automatique à sa chaîne de production. Neuf langues sont proposées, sans relecture humaine systématique. Un tarif qui change l’échelle économique de l’opération, sans faire disparaître les questions de droits.
À ce prix-là, GoRead change sérieusement l’échelle annoncée. Selon Boktugg dans son enquête du 7 septembre 2026, le service permet désormais de traduire un manuscrit entre neuf langues : suédois, danois, finnois, islandais, anglais, allemand, polonais, néerlandais et bulgare. Pour un roman d’environ 80.000 mots, la facture tourne autour de 3000 SEK (Couronne Suédoise) par langue, soit quelque 270 €.
Le service de publication de GoRead, lancé en février 2026, aurait déjà fait paraître 250 titres, principalement en Suède, indique Jonas Tellander. La société avait jusque-là concentré son automatisation sur la fabrication du livre : contrôle orthographique, proposition de quatrième de couverture, couverture, EPUB, fichier pour l’impression et narration audio. Sur son propre site, elle revendique 70 % des revenus reversés à l’auteur, qui conserve ses droits sur l’ouvrage.
Avec la traduction, le dispositif franchit une étape autrement sensible. GoRead décrit une succession d’agents : première version, traitement séparé des noms, lieux et expressions locales, reprise des formulations signalées comme incertaines, révision linguistique, puis arbitrage contextuel.
« Cela fonctionne vraiment bien lorsque les différents agents examinent le travail du précédent », assure Tellander. Mais aucune vérification manuelle n’est effectuée par GoRead. L’auteur peut faire relire le résultat avant publication — à ses frais et à son initiative. Le tarif porte donc sur la génération et le traitement automatisé du texte, pas sur une validation humaine.
Neuf langues, et l’audio avec
L’extension linguistique vaut aussi pour le livre audio. GoRead annonce pouvoir produire des narrations synthétiques dans les mêmes neuf langues et distribuer ebooks et audiolivres sur les marchés couverts par Storytel, BookBeat, Nextory et Audible. Au lancement du service, les voix artificielles étaient produites avec la technologie d’ElevenLabs.
C’est du côté d’Audible que l’information mérite une précaution. Boktugg affirme que GoRead est parvenu à faire accepter ses narrations produites par IA, alors que le service n’acceptait jusque-là pas, selon le média suédois, les voix artificielles provenant de producteurs extérieurs. Aucune annonce publique d’Audible consultée ne permet cependant d’en conclure à une ouverture générale de sa plateforme. Le développement doit donc rester attribué à GoRead et à Boktugg.
Spotify devrait suivre, probablement au cours de l’automne. Pour le papier, l’internationalisation demeure plus prosaïque : GoRead continue de travailler avec Publit et ne distribue actuellement les exemplaires imprimés hors de Suède qu’en Finlande et au Danemark, les frais de transport limitant une extension plus large.
Un bouton « traduire » ne cède pas les droits
Reste la question que 3000 couronnes ne règlent pas : a-t-on le droit de faire traduire le texte que l’on vient de déposer ? En Suède, rien n’interdit en soi de recourir à une IA pour traduire un ouvrage. En revanche, l’article 2 de la loi suédoise sur le droit d’auteur réserve au titulaire des droits l’exploitation de l’œuvre, y compris « en traduction ou adaptation ». Un écrivain qui possède encore ses droits de traduction peut donc recourir à un tel outil ; celui qui les a cédés doit d’abord regarder son contrat.
La promesse commerciale de GoRead — l’auteur conserve ses droits face au service — ne répond pas à cette question préalable. Elle décrit la relation avec GoRead, pas les engagements éventuellement conclus avec un éditeur, un agent ou un autre partenaire.
Un second problème apparaît une fois le texte traduit. L’article 4 de la même loi reconnaît des droits à celui qui traduit ou adapte une œuvre, sans lui permettre de porter atteinte à ceux attachés à l’original. Mais le PRV, l’office suédois de la propriété intellectuelle, rappelle que la protection suppose un créateur humain capable d’effectuer des choix libres et créatifs. La Cour de justice de l’Union européenne applique elle aussi ce critère d’originalité.
Pour une version générée intégralement par une machine, sans intervention créative humaine suffisante, l’existence d’une protection autonome demeure donc incertaine. À l’inverse, une reprise substantielle par une personne peut introduire des choix susceptibles d’être protégés. Aucun texte ni aucune décision identifiés ne tranchent spécifiquement le cas des traductions produites par GoRead.
L’AI Act européen ne rend pas davantage le service illégal. Son article 50 prévoit notamment, pour les fournisseurs de systèmes générant du texte ou de l’audio synthétique, des obligations techniques de marquage des sorties, assorties d’exceptions. Mais l’obligation faite aux utilisateurs de signaler un texte produit ou manipulé par IA vise les contenus publiés afin d’informer le public sur des questions d’intérêt public : elle ne crée pas, à elle seule, une mention obligatoire « traduit par IA » sur chaque roman.
GoRead ne précise pas publiquement quel modèle assure ses traductions. Impossible, dans ces conditions, d’attribuer plus précisément les obligations entre les différents acteurs techniques.
Pour les auteurs autoédités — et, demain, les petites maisons auxquelles GoRead veut également ouvrir ses outils — la barrière économique baisse brutalement. La responsabilité éditoriale et juridique, elle, reste entre des mains très humaines.

New Translation of the Epistles Named Australian Christian Book of the Year
"A new translation making the New Testament epistles accessible to children has been named the 2026 Australian Christian Book of the Year, with judges calling the project "unprecedented".
The award was announced at the SparkLit Awards Night on Thursday 20 August, alongside the Australian Christian Teen Writer Award, won by Hanna Pheh for The Unintended Race.
The Australian Christian Book of the Year Award has recognised excellence in Christian writing since 1981 and carries a 3000 dollar prize for the winning author.
A children’s translation of the New Testament epistles has taken out the country’s top honour for Christian writing, with judges praising its ability to bring ancient Scripture to life for readers of all ages.
God’s Very Special Letters: The Epistles for Kids – covering Philippians, Colossians and Philemon, and 1 Peter – has been named the 2026 Australian Christian Book of the Year. The announcement was made at the SparkLit Awards Night, held on Thursday 20 August at St Alfred’s Anglican Church in Blackburn North, Melbourne.
A fresh way into familiar Scripture
The book is a collaboration between Matt Dodd, a pastor at Lakemba Anglican Church, and illustrator and cartoonist Thom Bransdon, published through The Open Word.
Judges praised the translation for its direct, plain language, noting it’s “a joy to read” and that the accompanying illustrations advance the narrative, reflect the culture of the original readers, and keep people at the centre of complex theological ideas.
Judges called the project “unprecedented”, posing the question many readers may find themselves asking:
“This unprecedented and wonderful initiative makes these epistles accessible to children and offers older readers a fresh encounter with familiar and favourite parts of Scripture. Why hasn’t this been done before?”
Why the epistles, and why now
Speaking to Hope 103.2’s Ben McEachen last year, Matt explained the thinking behind the project and why it doesn’t take the easy road of simply paraphrasing an existing children’s Bible.
“There have been many attempts to translate the Bible into the language of children,” Matt said.

Matt and Thom chose to begin with Philippians, Colossians and 1 Peter partly because the epistles can be overlooked as biblical texts for younger readers.
“The letters in the New Testament are windows on to the lives of real Christian people being transformed by the gospel, diverse communities of young and old coming together around Christ,” he said.
“We want to make books for children that are full of colour and adventure, because the Epistles are full of colour and adventure.”
For Matt, the goal goes beyond readability. He wants children to be able to encounter God’s word for themselves, without needing an adult to translate or explain it along the way.
“[They] can have a personal relationship with God without needing the help of adults,” he said.
“They can relate to God, from the word of God themselves, without barriers, stress or pressure. I can hear the voice of my heavenly Father; he can be my father; I can be his child. That’s the passion; that’s what is driving us.”
A night of celebration for Christian writers
The Australian Christian Book of the Year Award has been presented annually since 1981, recognising original writing by Australian citizens that contributes to Christian literature in Australia. The winning author receives a 3000 dollar prize, along with a framed certificate for both author and publisher.
This year’s shortlist of nine included a wide range of voices and genres, from Stan Grant’s reflections on faith and identity in Murriyang, to Jessica Claire Bond’s A King Washes Feet, an exploration of grace inspired by her popular footwashing series.
The same night also saw Hanna Pheh, from Mount Waverley in Victoria, awarded the 2026 Australian Christian Teen Writer Award for her novel The Unintended Race, which follows a young girl wrestling with questions of life, death, forgiveness and divine providence as her family comes to faith, set against the backdrop of 1980s Kuala Lumpur.

I’ve never thought of deafness as a disability and, through my interpreting work, I have been able to expose many hearing individuals to the Deaf Culture that I know and love. Deaf people tell jokes, have parties, go to concerts, drive cars, work jobs, and watch TV. They attend classes, and go out to eat, and communicate on the phone (using a video phone or relay). As an interpreter, it’s interesting to note how many hearing people simply assume deaf people cannot enjoy things. That notion couldn’t be more misguided! As I. King Jordan famously said “Deaf people can do anything hearing people can do, except hear.”
