October 13 – UEFA is exploring major changes to its World Cup qualifying format, with senior officials acknowledging concerns that the current system has become predictable and is losing appeal among fans and broadcasters.
According to the latest reports in UK media, a working group under UEFA’s National Teams Committee is reviewing alternative qualification structures. The move comes as the 2026 FIFA World Cup in North America expands to 48 teams — a shift that further complicates an already crowded international calendar and bloated qualification process.

April 10 – Deloitte predicts that global revenues in women’s elite sports will reach at least US$3 billion (£2.2 billion) for the first time in 2026. This represents a 25% increase on the US$2.4 billion value generated in 2025.
Deloitte bases its numbers on matchday, broadcast, and commercial revenues. Commercial revenue – including sponsorships, partnerships and merchandising sales – is where Deloitte sees the largest share of revenues at 45% – a similar share to 2025 (46%).

March 12 – Lobby group the Union of European Clubs (UEC) has proposed a new and radical redistribution model of UEFA revenue to address financial inequality in the club game.
On the sidelines of the annual general assembly of the European Leagues, the umbrella organisation uniting the continent’s domestic competitions, UEC presented a new model to redistribute the prize money of European club competitions and address the growing financial disparities in the continental game.

January 22 – The Swiss Canton of Vaud that had a motion before its Tuesday night Grand Council meeting calling for the revoking of UEFA’s tax exemption in the region, did not manage to progress its meeting agenda to the point of a vote. The motion is an attempt to bring pressure on UEFA to suspend the Israeli FA (IFA).
With the Vaud meeting running long, a number of agenda items at the end of the schedule were carried over to the next Vaud meeting of MPs next Tuesday.

January 20 – Taking a leaf out of US president Donald Trump’s international diplomacy model, pro-Palestine supporters aim to bring pressure on UEFA to suspend the Israeli Football Association (IFA) by hitting the confederation where they believe it hurts most – at the bank.
Today (Tuesday) Swiss local parliamentarians in the Canton of Vaud will vote on revoking UEFA’s tax exemption. UEFA’s headquarters in Nyon are within the Vaud canton.
The argument behind the resolution is that the International Court of Justice (ICJ) ruled that Israel is illegally occupying Palestinian land in the West Bank. Read more …

The match, due to take place in Western Australia in February, would have marked the first time a European domestic league game was staged outside its home continent, after La Liga’s plans to host a fixture between Villarreal and Barcelona in Miami also came undone.

January 30 – Nine clubs will begin the new Chinese Super League (CSL) season with points deductions after the latest round of sanctions stemming from investigations into match-fixing, gambling and corruption.
This is another major blow to the domestic game that has spent the better part of a decade battling credibility issues.
Shanghai Shenhua, last season’s runners-up, and Tianjin Tigers received the heaviest penalties, each docked 10 points before a ball is even kicked.

January 22 – Real Madrid remain the financial benchmark in world football, finishing top of Deloitte’s latest Football Money League as the game’s biggest clubs pushed revenues to a new high.
The Money League table lays out the combined total of €12.4bn in revenue generated by the top 20 clubs across the 2024/25 season – an increase of 11% on the previous year. Deloitte point to three main income streams to explain the growth.
