Canadian physician and stress management specialist David Posen asks a question on the minds of many in his new book 'Is Work Killing You?
American Institute Health Care Professionals's insight:

#canstresskillyou #physicaleffectsofstress #jobstress #stressintheworkplace Wondering " Can stress kill you?" Author and stress management specialist David Posen seems to think so.   In his new book "Is Work Killing You? A Doctor's Prescription for Treating Workplace Stress" he details how job stress can be causing you unneeded stress and how to resolve it.

The physical effects of stress because of your stress in the workplace can cause several serious physical aliments.   From high blood pressure to depression can all be directly related to too much stress.   Learning to deal with stress effectively could drastically improve your health and well being.

The author later states what he feels are the biggest factors of work stress. He feels that the volume of the workload, the faster pace of the job and sometimes abuse can all lead to large increases in stress.   Added to the fact that, as a workforce, we are taking less and less time to relax, it is no wonder job related stress is killing us.

5 Foods That Cause Stress | Reboot With Joe

5 Foods That Cause Stress | Reboot With Joe | Stress Management | Scoop.it
Feeling stressed? We’re all used to pinning it on our jobs, schedules or relationships. But would you have guessed that foods could be the culprits?
American Institute Health Care Professionals's insight:

#causesofstress #reducestresswithahealthydiet #holisticstressprevention  Stress is a reaction we all experience on a daily basis.   There are a number of causes of stress that include our diet.    The foods we eat could be adding to our stress levels.     Combating stress could be as easy as eating a piece of fruit instead of a piece of pizza.

Reduce stress with a healthy diet.   Eat less refined sugars and processed foods can not only make you healthier but less stressed as well.   Holistic stress prevention advice also suggests to stay away from "factory farmed" eggs and dairy.   Most of the time these food sources are heavily processed with hormones and antibiotics which is not good for stress nor your health.   In the end stick to an organic, GMO free diet and your stress will melt away as quickly as your waist line.

Retirement doesn’t ease stress

Retirement doesn’t ease stress | Stress Management | Scoop.it
When I began teaching stress management more than 30 years ago, I wondered if interest would eventually wane as it does for fads.
American Institute Health Care Professionals's insight:

#retirementstress #teachingstressmanagement #howtomanagestress #dealingwithstress As retirement approaches everyone seems to think that stress will retire with the job.   The truth is stress does not retire.  It just comes from different sources.

Retirement stress can come from a number of areas.  From a huge change in lifestyle to a reduction in income can all trigger stress.   This is why retired adults should learn how to manage stress.

Dealing with stress is easy when you are use to it.   However these new sources of stress can be especially troubling.   Teaching stress management techniques can be extremely helpful.    Because your retirement is about sitting back and enjoying yourself, not stressing over it.

Desolie Crilley's curator insight, March 5, 2014 5:45 AM

This article blew me away when I read that American Medical Association quoted 30 years ago 50% of illness was related to stress and now it is up to 90%. While this is obviously an American statistic, we have a similiar lifestyle and standard of living so I am assuming Australia would be something similiar.  Having spent over 30 years of my life nursing, I believe I have a pretty good insight into Australia's health.  When I think of the amount of money and resources that are dedicated to mental health compared to other areas, I realise that it is severely underfunded.  One reason may be the stigma attached to mental health and  reluctance of people to admit that they may have a problem and need help to cope. It was also enlightening when you realise the value of her statement that stress is not in the situation but in the perception.  We dont always have the opportunity to control other people and situations but we can recognise within ourselves our perceptions and because we own them then we have the potential to change them.

If you can’t avoid a stressful situation, try to alter it. Figure out what you can do to change things so the problem doesn’t present itself in the future.
American Institute Health Care Professionals's insight:

#stressmanagementtips #managingyourstress #learningtomanagestress #waystodealwithstress Stress management tips are good but at one point you need to be able to take charge.    By taking charge of your life you can manage stress without really trying.

Learning to manage stress is easy.   Just keep a balanced life.    There are plenty of ways to deal with stress however the best is taking preventative measures and stopping stress before it has a chance to wear you down.   Learning to manage stress this way allows you to control your life by taking charge of your thoughts, emotions, schedule, etc.    By designing plans and schedules you will be keeping a balance of work and play.

Adjustments you can start making today would be keeping a stress journal.   By writing down what causes you stress and how you react to it, you can write a plan of action on how to effectively deal with your stress.    Also by doing this you can see what your stress triggers are and how you can completely avoid them altogether.
