Center for Disease Control uses VR to train disaster first-responders

Center for Disease Control uses VR to train disaster first-responders | Simulation in Health Sciences Education | Scoop.it
Now officials want to expand the program. According to a $626,000 contractawarded Thursday to Atlanta-based company Virtually Better, Inc., phase three of the CDC’s plan calls for a virtual reality environment featuring from two to three dozen ”sights, sounds, smells or ideas.” (The notion of adding olfactory components to VR equipment has been kicking around for a while, and the CDC wants odors as varied as urine and garbage.) The agency also wants to be able to adjust the settings according to trainees’ experience levels. Disaster scenarios will be drawn straight from the Department of Homeland Security. With the training, the contract said, emergency workers will get a better “emotional vaccination,” and it might even help returning responders cope with post-traumatic stress disorder.

5 Ways Virtual Worlds Can Help Therapy – Hypergrid Business

5 Ways Virtual Worlds Can Help Therapy – Hypergrid Business | Simulation in Health Sciences Education | Scoop.it

by Amanda Green

"Virtual reality therapies are increasingly proving successful in a number of settings. As the virtual reality platforms and interfaces improve, we will start to see more of the following:

"1. Reducing pain

Pain is partly psychological in nature, which means that distractions can help relieve pain. Listening to music, for example, is one distraction that’s able to help reduce pain. Virtual reality is another distraction that has proven to reduce pain substantially.

"One example is in the care of burn victims, who often have to suffer through a great deal of pain. The virtual reality game SnowWorld, for example, has been used to help children and wounded veterans reduce perceived pain, reduce need for anesthesia, and improve healing and mobility."

How Google Glass Is Changing Medical Education | Simulation in Health Sciences Education | Scoop.it
VideoMedical education, from traditional medical school to the field training of paramedics, is about to fall under the influence of Google Glass.  Today, high tech training simulation is mainstream.

Google Glass changes our vision of healthcare and shortens this distance between the patient and caregiver   And it’s in that shortened distance and immediacy of response that awaits the potential opportunity  to vastly improve care, and in the final analysis, save lives.

Ethical Framework for the Use of Social Media by Mental Health Professionals

Abigail McNeely's curator insight, June 25, 2013 7:36 PM

Social media has become such a normal part of everyday life that it's no surprise it has become a mental health tool too. But, just like any other encounter with mental health services, services offered via social media must have ethical guidelines.

If you are accessing mental health through social media as either a client or a practitioner, you should be aware of ethical standards that apply.

Telemedicine for physical therapy: The Avatar will see you now

Telemedicine for physical therapy: The Avatar will see you now | Simulation in Health Sciences Education | Scoop.it

Most patients who enter the gym of the San Mateo Medical Center in California are there to work with physical therapists. But a few who had knee replacements are being coached by a digital avatar instead.

The avatar, Molly, interviews them in Spanish or English about the levels of pain they feel as a video guides them through exercises, while the 3-D cameras of a Kinect device measure their movements. Because it’s a pilot project, Paul Carlisle, the director of rehabilitation services, looks on. But the ultimate goal is for the routine to be done from a patient’s home.
