What is journalistic translation and why is it important? Journalistic translation refers to the process of translating news articles, reports, or other journalistic content from one language to another. It involves conveying the information accurately while maintaining the tone, style, and context of the original piece. Journalistic translators need to be proficient in both the source and target languages, as well as have a good understanding of the cultural nuances and journalistic conventions in both languages. What are the benefits of translation in mass media? The goal is to ensure that the translated content effectively communicates the intended message to the target audience while adhering to journalistic standards. Translation plays a vital role in mass media and communication. By ensuring that information is accessible to everyone, regardless of their linguistic background, translation helps us to share ideas and communicate with each other effectively. In today’s globalized world, translation is more important than ever before.

Machine Translation Manifesto by the European Federation of Audiovisual Translators - Using machine translation (MT) correctly requires insight, expertise and careful planning. We do not believe that fully automated localisation processes are likely to happen anytime soon.
- The quality of machine translation output depends on many factors: the way the source text is written, how creative it is, whether the MT engine has been trained with appropriate data, etc.
- In audiovisual (AV) content, the meaning of words is affected by the sound and image. MT engines do not understand context and merely reproduce existing translations. This makes machine translation less suitable for audiovisual translation.
- Translators are rarely invited to participate in the design of MT solutions, and it is assumed that one size fits all, although translators have different styles of work.
- Although proponents of MT claim that efficiency gains are guaranteed, fixing a poor translation can take longer than translating the same text from scratch. Some translators produce translations of worse quality when using MT. This means that the effort is merely shifted from the translator to the reviser.

Developing Technology to Protect Biblical Translations in Remote Areas Wycliffe Associates, one of the world’s leading bible #translation organizations, provides #translators living in remote regions with the necessary technology to protect and accelerate the translation of scriptures. The organization announced the development of bible translation acceleration kits for translators living in isolated areas without internet connectivity. In the last few years, technology has allowed the bible to reach millions of people in new and innovative ways. Each kit, valued at $2,500, offers access to all the bible translation software a linguistic group needs, along with a satellite internet connection. When a linguistic group receives a kit and translates the scriptures into their mother tongue, they share what they have learned with other linguistic groups in their region.

Nintendo accused of failing to credit translators in its games Nintendo has been accused of not crediting some of the translators who have worked on its games. The accusations have been levied by multiple translators who have helped to translate Nintendo's titles into various languages to suit its worldwide audience. Games not crediting employees or freelance workers is a problem that's emerged in the industry before. Putting the name of someone who worked on the game in the credits is a friendly gesture, thanking the worker for their efforts and giving them a bit of bragging rights, too. However, this particular problem with Nintendo even goes beyond the credits. Game Developer spoke with multiple individuals who have worked on Nintendo titles and discussed the ongoing problem of not being credited in games. When the credits roll, most games will list a translation team that worked on the title. However, as one of the interviewees pointed out, the number of translators listed on many Nintendo games seems to be quite small. This is because Nintendo allegedly credits its in-house translators, but not the translators of secondary companies that work on its games.

NEW BOOK ALERT! Translation, Interpreting and Technological Change: Innovations in Research, Practice and Training by Marion Winters (Anthology Editor), Sharon Deane-Cox (Anthology Editor) and Ursula Böser (Anthology Editor) Description The digital era is characterised by technological advances that increase the speed and breadth of knowledge turnover within the economy and society. This book examines the impact of these technological advances on translation and interpreting and how new technologies are changing the very nature of language and communication.
Reflecting on the innovations in research, practice and training that are associated with this turbulent landscape, chapters consider what these shifts mean for translators and interpreters. Technological changes interact in increasingly complex and pivotal ways with demographic shifts, caused by war, economic globalisation, changing social structures and patterns of mobility, environmental crises, and other factors. As such, researchers face new and often cross-disciplinary fields of inquiry, practitioners face the need to acquire and adopt novel skills and approaches, and trainers face the need to train students for working in a rapidly changing landscape of communication technology. This book brings together advances and challenges from the different but intertwined perspectives of translation and interpreting to examine how the field is changing in this rapidly evolving environment.

Quebec has a desperate need for sign language interpreters, in both French and English. There are currently only around 250 interpreters across the province, but advocates say there needs to be double that number to meet the demand. "If we don't have a pool of interpreters to feed the system, then the system is always going to be at a loss," said Cynthia Benoit, at Service D'Interprétation Visuel et Tactile (SIVET). SIVET is a non-profit that recruits and places sign language interpreters for health-care and government services. Benoit is Deaf and works with an interpreter. She says the lack of interpreters greatly impacts deaf people, especially when they need to go to school or the doctor. "The doctor's not able to explain everything clearly to the patient. For example, the consequences of the diagnosis or the treatment. And so it affects not only the deaf person, but also that health-care professional just trying to do their job," she told CTV News. According to advocates, there has been a 350 per cent increase in the demand for interpretation services since 2016 because of video relay services. The service allows people with hearing disabilities to use sign language to communicate over the phone.

An American Medical Association study found that 43% of non-native speakers who were hospitalized communicated without an interpreter during admissions and 40% lacked linguistics support after admission. Lack of adequate translation and interpreting services isn’t just an inconvenience, it is dangerous and potentially life-threatening. The National Institutes of Health found that language barriers lead to miscommunication between clinicians and patients, impacting patient satisfaction, quality of healthcare delivery, and patient safety. Not surprisingly, studies show that patients who face language barriers have poorer health outcomes compared to those who speak the local language.

This book is offering an in-depth, interdisciplinary analysis of Arabic and English language narratives of the Islamic State terrorist group. It investigates how these narratives changed across national and media boundaries. Utilizing insights and methodologies from translation studies, communication studies and sociology, Islamic State in Translation explores how multimodal narratives of IS and survivors were fragmented, circulated and translated in the context of the terrorist action carried out by Islamic State against the people and culture of Iraq, as well as against other victims around the world. Closely examining four atrocities, the Speicher massacre, the enslavement of Ezidi women, execution videos and videos of the destruction of Iraqi cultural heritage, Balsam Mustafa explores how the Arabic and English-language narratives of these events were translated, developed, and fragmented. In doing so, she advances a socio-narrative theory and reconsiders translation in the new media environment, within a broader socio-political field of inquiry.
