Rebecca Gayle Howell, associate professor of poetry and translation in the Department of English's M.F.A. Program in Creative Writing and Translation, has been awarded the 2025 Aiken Taylor Award for Modern American Poetry. 

The award has been presented since 1987 by The Sewanee Review literary magazine. Their editors note the Aiken Taylor Award "has honored a distinguished poet in the maturity of their career. … Established by the physician and poet K.P.A. Taylor in honor of his elder brother, the modernist poet and story writer Conrad Aiken, the Aiken Taylor Award has celebrated poets such as Howard Nemerov, Gwendolyn Brooks, Wendell Berry, Louise Glück and Billy Collins."         

"This award, one of many in an accruing list of notable honors, is a testament to Rebecca's prowess as a talented and multifaceted poet and translator. We are fortunate to have her as a peer and teacher in the English Department," notes Dr. Yajaira Padilla, chair of the Department of English.

The American Literary Translators Association is delighted to announce that the 2026 Emerging Translator Mentorship Program submission portals are open!

The ALTA Emerging Translator Mentorship Program is designed to establish and facilitate a close working relationship between an experienced translator and an emerging translator on a project selected by the emerging translator. The mentorship duration is one year.

The emerging translator is expected to choose a project that can be completed in that time, and they will only be advised on that particular project. ALTA’s Emerging Translator Mentorship Program was founded by former ALTA Board member Allison M. Charette. Since its inception, the program has supported over 90 translators working from over 30 languages.

All mentors and mentees meet via video conference at the beginning of their mentorship in February, and continue their work through individual meetings either in person, over Zoom, or by phone. A minimum of six meetings is expected during the first nine months of the mentorship. The mentorship will feature a presentation of the mentee’s work in a reading at the annual ALTA conference in the fall and conclude with the opportunity to submit work to our “First Look” program for possible publication. 

The pandemic has been an endurance test for multilingualism, wrote the University of Fribourg (Unifr) in a press release on Wednesday. The federal authorities, in particular the Federal Office of Public Health, translated texts into no fewer than 26 languages. This includes sign language.

While health information was published and made accessible in as many languages as possible, information on financial assistance, such as compensation for loss of earnings, was only published in the number of languages required by law.

The research project “Multilingualism in a health crisis situation” is based on the evaluation of published information from the first year of the pandemic (2020/2021) and on interviews with 90 people who were involved in translation work.

Nigerian Pidgin is the most spoken language in Africa in 2025, with 121 million speakers, according to new data from Ethnologue compiled by Visual Capitalist.

The ranking, which combines both first and second-language speakers, places Nigerian Pidgin 14th globally, ahead of Egyptian Arabic, Hausa, and Swahili. Only about 5 million people speak Pidgin as a first language, but 116 million use it as a second language, making it one of the fastest-growing lingua francas on the continent.

Pidgin serves as a bridge language across Nigeria’s diverse ethnic groups and is widely used in media, entertainment, commerce, and informal communication. Its reach extends to parts of West Africa through trade and migration.

Hausa, another major West African language spoken in Nigeria and Niger, ranks 19th globally with 94 million speakers 58 million first-language and 36 million second-language users.

The Mainichi: Staff reviser and translator wanted

The Mainichi is seeking a translator and English language reviser and writer to join its news team in Tokyo, for a one-year contracted position opening in September 2025. Upon mutual agreement, the contract may be extended up to two times, the total maximum period being three years. The job will include translation of Japanese news into English, proofreading and rewriting English articles, and may also include writing original news and features in English.

Sebastian Enderlein, Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of DeepL, responded to a question about what sets DeepL apart from its competitors during a press conference held on the 21st at the Grand InterContinental Seoul Parnas in Samseong-dong, Seoul. He said that while the universal translation features of major artificial intelligence (AI) companies, such as OpenAI's ChatGPT, Google's Gemini, and Anthropic's Claude, are like a "Swiss Army knife" (meaning tools that can be used for multiple purposes), DeepL provides advanced customized translations for corporations. Notably, in Korea, it offers specialized solutions for legal document translations to Shin & Kim LLC.

CTO Enderlein noted, "As DeepL is a service specialized in language and translation, we conduct large-scale blind tests before launching specific languages, and we are designing our solutions to eliminate the need for follow-up tasks after translation." He explained that typically, after using an AI-based translator, there is a subsequent process in which a person reviews and edits the translated material, yet DeepL is focusing on minimizing this post-editing.

Large language models function through sophisticated retrieval rather than genuine reasoning, according to research published across multiple studies in 2025.

The debate surrounding artificial intelligence capabilities has intensified following key research findings published in March and April 2025. Subbarao Kambhampati, a professor at Arizona State University and former president of the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence, has challenged prevailing assumptions about large language models through extensive technical documentation.

According to Kambhampati's research, published as Can Large Language Models Reason and Plan? in March 2025, these systems excel at what he terms "universal approximate retrieval" rather than principled reasoning. "LLMs are trained to predict the distribution of the n-th token given n-1 previous tokens," the research states, explaining that current models function as sophisticated n-gram systems trained on web-scale language corpora.

L’Europe repousse encore la reconnaissance officielle de la langue catalane 

Le conseil des Affaires générale de l’Union européenne a retoqué une nouvelle fois la reconnaissance du catalan, du basque et du galicien comme langues officielles de l’UE. Plusieurs pays y restent hostiles.

Réunis à Bruxelles ce vendredi, les ministres des affaires européennes des 27 ont encore une fois repoussé la reconnaissance comme langues officielles de l’Union Européennes le catalan, le basque et le galicien. La discussion aura d’ailleurs duré moins d’une heure, le temps d’acter les profondes divergences de vues sur ce dossier entre pays. Or le consensus était la condition nécessaire à l’organisation d’un vote.

Des pays comme l’Allemagne, l’Autriche la république tchèque, la Suède, l'Italie, la Croatie, la Finlande ou la Pologne ont, comme au mois de mai dernier, exprimé leurs réticences. Selon eux, la reconnaissance de ces trois langues pose un problème juridique car il faudrait revoir les traités. L’inquiétude est également financière même si l’Espagne a promis de prendre en charges les coûts liés à un éventuel changement de statut du basque, du catalan et du galicien. Pour le gouvernement espagnol, ces oppositions sont surtout d’ordre idéologique.

Tech giant Meta has apologized and said it has fixed an auto-translation issue that led one of its social media platforms to mistakenly announce the death of Indian politician Siddaramaiah.

The chief minister of the southwestern Indian state of Karnataka posted on Instagram Tuesday in the local Kannada language, saying he was paying his respects to the late Indian actress B. Saroja Devi. He also paid tribute to the actress on Facebook and X.

However, Meta’s auto-translation tool inaccurately translated the Instagram post to suggest that Siddaramaiah, who uses just one name, was the one who “passed away.”

Crunchyroll Accidentally Reveals They've Been Using ChatGPT for Sub Translations

A Crunchyroll spokesperson reached out to CBR on July 3 to confirm that the streamer was made aware that AI-generated subtitles were employed by a third-party vendor, in violation of its agreement. Crunchyroll is currently investigating the matter and working to rectify the error.

Crunchyroll has earned the ire of anime fans after viewers spotted evidence that the streamer is using ChatGPT for its subtitle translations. The incident came to light shortly after the premiere of the new Summer 2025 anime series, Necronomico and the Cosmic Horror Show, on July 1.

X (formerly Twitter) user CheeseGX posted a screenshot from the first episode showing a bizarre line in the German subtitles. At the 19:12 mark, the subtitle read, "ChatGPT said:Wenn ich die Welt von hier an weiter genießen kann." The post quickly went viral, with netizens speculating that the subtitle files were likely created with minimal human oversight. However, the English subtitles for the same anime episode likewise featured multiple errors, at one point crediting the episode's translation to the generic placeholder: "Translated by: Translator’s name."

La traduction s’est imposée comme un levier incontournable pour le renforcement de la sécurité nationale et internationale, ont affirmé les participants à un colloque international organisé mercredi à Rabat, sur le thème «Traduction et sécurité : le rôle de la traduction dans le renforcement de la sécurité nationale et internationale.»

Organisée par l’Organisation du monde islamique pour l’éducation, les sciences et la culture (Icesco), en collaboration avec l’Université arabe Naif des sciences de sécurité en Arabie saoudite, cette rencontre a permis de mettre en exergue le rôle multidimensionnel de la traduction, notamment en termes de transfert rapide et précis d’informations sensibles, dans le cadre de la lutte contre le terrorisme et la criminalité organisée ou encore en matière de gestion des crises sécuritaires urgentes.

S'exprimant à cette occasion, le directeur général de l’Icesco, Dr Salem ben Mohammed Al-Malik, a souligné que la traduction représente aujourd’hui un «soft power» essentiel pour façonner un discours sécuritaire global inclusif et promouvoir la compréhension interculturelle, mettant l’accent sur la nécessité de créer des espaces culturels sûrs, fondés sur la diversité linguistique et les valeurs d'entente mutuelle.

Language as a bridge and barrier - SALALS 2025 explores African linguistic futures

These themes took centre stage at the 2025 Southern African Linguistics and Applied Linguistics Society (SALALS) Conference, held from 25 to 27 June at Nelson Mandela University’s Business School.

From healthcare to higher education, and digital inclusion to identity politics, language is emerging as both a barrier and a bridge in shaping access, justice, and transformation.

Under the theme “Traditions, Transformations and African Thought: Imagining Linguistics in Africa for the 21st Century,” the conference brought together linguists, educators, and language practitioners from across Southern Africa to interrogate how linguistic practices and policies can better reflect African realities and resist colonial legacies.

L'Agence nationale de police a modifié ses règles d'enquête criminelle pour permettre aux interprètes vivant dans des zones reculées de fournir leurs services à distance.

The annual award honours outstanding translations of literary worksinto the 24 Indian languages recognised by the akademi. Books published between January 1, 2019, and December 31, 2023, are eligible.

The akademi encourages translators, publishers, and literary enthusiasts to submit one copy of the translated work along with the duly filled application form. The deadline for the submission is May 31, 2025, said a release.

The prize recognises and promotes literary exchange across Indian languages by honouring translators who bring regional masterpieces to a wider audience, the release added.
