For anyone who doesn't know about the B&H Photo Event Space, you are living in the dark. Firstly, B&H is the Disneyland for photographers - a photo and video mega-store located on 34th street (facing 9th Avenue) in Manhattan. If it has to do with photography, B&H Photo will have it. They also have a lot of other things going on aside from merely retailing. One such thing is the B&H Event Space - a series of lectures by photographers offered free to the general public. The program has been running since 2007 and is directed by photographer David Brommer.

When it comes to digital photography I am a dinosaur. A grumpy old curmudgeon. For years I held out with my film cameras, constantly finding reasons why analogue was superior to digital photography. I still have somewhere north of 30 very fine film cameras, a sack full of lenses and a deep freezer filled with frozen film. It was only when the process of getting the film developed and scanned became too onerous and time-consuming and, when clients wanted images delivered on-the-spot, that I reluctantly bought my first DSLR. But I continued to try to convince clients that film offered a unique look and three-dimensional quality (I still believe that) but the truth was, they did not care, couldn't see it, or didn't want to. Certainly, they weren't prepared to pay more for a wedding or portrait session shot on film.

In the final part of the Dramatic Beauty Portrait Tutorial, we will look at how I do my Black and White conversion. This image is a dramatic image so it calls for a punchy and high-contrast black and white conversion. In this tutorial, I will show you how I stack blending modes and adjustment layers to get my image exactly where I want it. You can follow these steps in your own images or use the techniques and customize them for your own use. In the video you will also see how to use layer masks to create targeted adjustments for your high-contrast black and white portraits.
hpc's insight:
The mood lighting in churches are sometimes fascinating.Depending on the time of day and the season gets the space partially completely different light.Sometimes has already been taken in the construction of that certain light moods arise. In the Romanesque period are often found the style of the Basilica - while the nave is twice as high and twice as wide as the aisles. In the latter, the windows are then usually very small, so that the main light sits quite high in the church.Apart from a few days in mid-summer thus there is a quite diffused light in the church - in particular leads to the fact that the columns and pillars do not cast strong shadows on the altar and the therein hidden relics.

In my opinion, mastering negative dodge and burn is the key to any beauty retouch. There are many steps and many hours that go into a great retouch, but negative dodge and burn is as essential, if not more so, than any of them. The term "negative dodge and burn" is one that I first heard from fellow retoucher Pratik Naik. It was the concept of having a specific process of removing distractions and smoothing tonal transitions through dodge and burn that was responsible for one of the biggest jumps in my own personal retouching game. In this tutorial we will look at what negative dodge and burn is, the theory behind what you should be altering, and the tools and techniques in Photoshop that you need to know to get started with Step 4 in our Beauty Portrait Tutorial.
Complementary Colors is a tricky thing to pull off since you need to have that mental color wheel in your head and at the same time, making sure you have a strong point of interest in your composition. Weather also needs to be in your side to pull off those nice contrasty colors that will make your Complementary Color stand out. Despite those challenges, I think this group of images pulled it off!
