Backlighting can be advantageous at times, creating a strong silhouette, but too much of the scene may be left in shadow, assuming you want to retain highlight detail. Lightroom presents us with a couple of different ways to reduce the effects of backlighting, and the software has some really great tools to edit exposure specifically in one part of an image. The Adjustment Brush enables us to control the trees in this image separately to reveal some shadow detail that was lost due to the backlight. The one big problem that you’ll often run into when improving shadow detail is noise. You can counteract this issue using the Detail adjustments and also the noise-reduction controls, along with desaturating the colours that appear with the most amount of noise.
