I have already written about them in some length on other sites. They are basic training on The Workshop, and many photographs posted to this site are executions of gestalt factor thinking and seeing.
That said, it is time for a more general update on gestalt factors and how to use them. The first posts related to gestalt factors dates back to 2007 and 2008 and the blog Barebones Communication. You can find the posts there by looking in the blogroll visible from the front page.
ne of New York’s original street-photography stars, Ricky Powell came up in the eighties, working odd jobs as a dog walker, frozen lemonade stand owner, and delivery boy to eventually become the unofficial tour photographer of the Beastie Boys and Run-DMC. That classic shot of Cindy Crawford in a bathroom stall at Club MK?

Gestalt factors, as part of the broader area of gestalt psychology, have been around almost a hundred year but never left a significant footprint on photography or on street photography. If you search for the combination you will find very little. You findings might turn out to be posts made to the forerunners of this site.

Stockholm, 2014 My friend Todd Hatakeyama recently gave me a superbly refreshing book titled: “The 5 Elements of Effective Thinking”. It is a basic primer on how to think more effectively when solving problems– and can help students, teachers, and anyone trying to learn or improve their
Photograph by Jeff Cabella Street photography has never been more popular, and it’s as fashionable amongst younger hipsters as it is amongst more traditional photographers. People speak about street photography as if it’s something new, when of course, it’s been around for years. Eugene Atget, born 1857, was an early pioneer and his atmospheric shots of Paris went on to inspire the greatest street photographer ever – Henri Cartier Bresson. Neither Atget nor Bresson thought of themselves as ‘stre
As you can see from the image below I have made a picture that really is from the guests point of view and it’s because of its totally upstaged nature that I really do love this picture.

A few weeks ago I happened upon a post on Reddit regarding a Chinese optical company who has developed a new 60mm macro lens. There are no other Nikon lenses on the market that offer a better than 1:1 magnification ratio.
I have a problem. I have really high expectations for myself. I want to become the best photographer I possibly can, the best teacher I possibly can, and also the best blogger that I possibly can.

My favorite part about photography is learning, exploring, discovering, and connecting with other photographers, which is what WPPI is all about! I sat in on David Beckstead’s Master Class Loco Light! Getting Crazy with Videolights and it was so much fun. David showed us how to use several different video lights, and even common flashlights, to create some fun and funky shadows and dramatic lighting.
As you know from my last post, I got the 56mm f/1.2 lens. It’s a sweet lens. It looks beautiful, and it takes beautiful photos. I was going to sell my 60mm lens after I got my 56mm lens. Unfortunately my laziness got to me and never got around to selling it.
Photographer Scott Robert Lim found success as a natural light wedding photographer, growing his business to the enviable 10k level by delivering fashion-influenced images to his style hungry clients. After a few years he discovered that relying only on natural light limited his potential so he started integrating strobes, LED video light and a variety of artificial lights to create dynamic memories in any location, indoors or out. Next he began sharing his signature techniques through workshops and online courses.

In this three part video series, filmmaker, Chris Weeks, and a team of his friends explore the lives of a handful of street photographers in hopes to shed a little light onto the methodology behind the popular photography genre. You’ve just sold your kidney and ordered a brand new Fujinon lens for your mirrorless X-Series Fujifilm camera. Then the unthinkable happens, you are shooting a party and that...
My three-camera-one-lens quest continues. After last Tuesday's excursion to Tower Bridge with the 50mm Apo-Summicron ASPH fixed to a Sony Ay Mark II body, I was back this morning with the same lens but a different camera, this time the Fuji X-T1.
