In this presentation, I share the work of the master Magnum photographers (Henri Cartier-Bresson, Elliott Erwitt, Diane Arbus, Martine Franck) and share the importance of "working the scene" (via contact sheets). So pretty much-- you don't want to just shoot one photograph of a stranger and move

The Street Photographer’s Manual, London-based photographer David Gibson’s how-to guide, broadly defines the term as any kind of photography taken in a public space … usually the photography of people going about their everyday lives. Gibson, though, clearly sees more. A direct philosophical descendent of Cartier-Bresson and a purist, he insists that the photographer must never impose himself upon the picture. For Gibson, “street photography’s core value is that it is never set up; this aspect is ‘non-negotiable’ because the guiding spirit of street photography is that it is real.”

I have always struggled with colour in digital and I know in Photoshop you can almost make the colours how you want them and almost do the same in Lightroom but I don’t want to spend hours and hours trying to make colours look how I want them to look. The days of transparency film were so simple, shoot get developed and view! Print your work! Job done…
Up to last weekend I have shot 95% black and white but the more I get in to Street the more the colour medium is calling me

n December 2014 Fujifilm released the latest firmware upgrade (version 3.00) for its X-T1 camera. More than a minor upgrade, the new firmware adds a number of new features that greatly enhance the camera’s capabilities. Let’s take a look at ones most likely to be of interest to X-T1 owners.

...I use the image on the LCD or EVF of my Fujifilm X-T1 as my guide to exposure. I change the camera settings based on the look I want to achieve. There are often many acceptable exposures from silhouette to super bright or high key. No light meter can make the decision about exposure for me. This part is art not a science. ...

Downtown LA, 2014 This morning on the way to the gym, I was listening to the newest podcast episode of “Invisibilia” (a new NPR podcast on cognitive and behavioral science) and they had an episode titled “Fearless”. The episode was fascinating to me— as I have always been obsessive with

The specific brand I've been using is one branded Camdiox, and it's the version for the Fuji X-mount. It's almost certain by now that the various "knock offs" are not direct copies of the Metabones, but it's more than probable that they use the same design principles. I am not exactly sure if the Camdiox is the same as other similar products; in Europe, the Roxsen company is one primary outlet for this brand, but not the only one. Because the original Metabones is quite expensive (besides any quality advantage, having to pay royalties to Caldwell doesn't help with pricing), it is rather difficult to justify, if you only use it infrequently. The Camdiox is under 100€ shipped, and it remains to be seen if the actual image quality is there, through real-world examples.

I wrote a post over the holidays about some projects you could do as a landscape photographer when you had an extra few moments of down time. One of the projects was to buy some frames and hang some photos. In the post I linked to my favorite frames (sold from IKEA), and in looking at the stats from the post I was amazed at how many people clicked on the link to see the frames. So I thought I’d share my quick process with you on how I size my photos, where I print them, and what frames I use.

Publishing your photographs online comes with the real risk that will you discover your images used on other websites and publications without your permission. It isn’t fair, it isn’t right but sadly, it happens. There are a few small steps you can take within Adobe Photoshop Lightroom to add a few additional levels of protection for your images that will help deter bloggers and publishers from using your photos without permission.

A street photographer should be able to remain as invisible as possible in order to capture a candid moment without disturbing it. Street photography also requires anticipation and patience. It’s also important not to grab the shot and walk away, other opportunities may develop within seconds to give you another moment in time well worth immortalizing with your camera. This happened to me twice this week while I was roaming the streets of St Paul with my camera. Both times I spotted interesting subjects, grabbed the shot I envisioned and a second one within minutes. Both story telling images that can stand together or on their own.

When I started taking pictures the conventional wisdom was to shoot with a 50mm equivalent lens (on a full frame camera or film). I stuck with that for years. It helps that good 50mm lenses are cheaper and have less distortion than other lenses on every camera system I've found2. This makes 50mm a natural place to start.
