I haven’t been shooting a lot of street photography this year, but over the past four years (2011-2014) I’ve done a fair amount. It might seem like a bit of a departure from the portraiture and beauty work I focus on with this site, but it’s another area of photography I’m equally passionate about.

Street photography is one of the most feared and uncertain types of photography, in which almost nothing is in your control and almost everything is based on luck, persistence and the ability to see and capture the moment.

We’re talking about taking photos of the most unfortunate members of our society in terms of socio-economic status: the homeless. You do it. I’ve done it. Every staffer that’s written for this site has done it. But there is the notion that taking photos of the homeless is exploitation of their current terrible situation. Just think, would you want someone to take a photo of you down on your luck?

Balance is one of the least-discussed principles of good composition, but it is perhaps the most important. Photographers, consciously or not, make an important decision for every image: should the composition be balanced or imbalanced? To some degree, every photograph in existence has elements of both balance and imbalance, which makes this topic crucial for photographers looking to improve the strength of their images at the most fundamental level.

Since the early days of film, panoramic photography has been synonymous with landscape and architectural images, and sometimes with other genres like street and wildlife photography. By combining two horizontal frames of film, typically 120 medium format, some film cameras actually shot panorama photographs by design.

Capturing sharp photographs is by far the toughest technical skill in street photography. People move quickly, you are often moving quickly, the light isn’t usually ideal, and you sometimes have to frame instantly and suddenly.
