Right after ‘what should I buy’ comes this series of questions: why don’t you use Lightroom? And what does Photoshop give me that Lightroom lacks? Moreover, is your workflow applicable to Lightroom? I received a slew of emails recently following the release of LR CC/6 and realised I’ve never really answered any of these questions. Today we’re going to fix that.
Hi everyone, I wanted to share some additional information regarding GPU support in Lr CC. Lr can now use graphics processors (GPUs) to accelerate interactive image editing in Develop. A big reason that we started here is the recent development and increased availability of high-res displays, such as 4K and 5K monitors. To give you some numbers: a standard HD screen is 2 megapixels (MP), a MacBook Retina Pro 15" is 5 MP, a 4K display is 8 MP, and a 5K display is a whopping 15 MP. This means on a 4K display we need to render and display 4 times as many pixels as on a standard HD display. Using the GPU can provide a significant speedup (10x or more) on high-res displays. The bigger the screen, the bigger the win.
My last article introduced the importance (or non-importance) of the shutter speed when used with flash indoors, this one deals with flash outdoors, which is very different. And it’s different because, outdoors in daylight, the ambient light produced by the sun is bright enough to affect the shot, and often is so bright that the flash makes little difference to the shot.
Over the next few weeks I am going to be producing a series of articles on how I give myself the best opportunities for bringing back some great images when out shooting landscapes. These are also the tips I give my guests who attend one of the MacLean Photographic Tours or Workshops.
When you are presented with a fantastic scene lit with superb light, most photographers grab the camera and start shooting without much thought to the composition of the image. They then get home and are disappointed by the results because the images don't convey the feelings they had when they were at the location.
Fujifilm X-A2 Review - The X-A2 adopts classic rangefinder styling and presents some subtle improvements over the X-A1. Is this enough to make it stand out as one of the best options in a saturated entry-level market?

Trouver de bons spots photos peut se révéler très difficile si l'on n'utilise pas les bons outils à la base. C'est pour cette raison que j'ai décidé d'écrire cet article. Premièrement faire des repérages sur carte (google Maps ou autres) dans une zone...
I've been doing short little blogs about finalizing an image with the understanding that, for the professional and the enthusiast, the image that goes from the camera to the computer in a RAW forma...
Use it well and you can make very subtle changes to the look of a model’s face, body or clothing. Use it badly and you might become a feature on one of the many bad Photoshop sites. The Liquify tool can be a sledgehammer if you don’t understand its nuances so today we are going to take a look at some of it’s more important features and how to use them.
As a wedding photographer, I tend to shoot thousands of images at a time. Before I can edit anything, I need to go through each image one by one, delete the bad ones, and figure out which images are actually worth editing/delivering. Lightroom is notoriously slow at loading raw files and therefore, culling thousands of images can take hours. Even if each image takes just 1 second to load, that extra time could add an hour to your workflow. In some cases with slower computers and larger files, each image can take longer than 5 seconds to load which in turn can add hours to your editing process.
Leading lines in photography are some of the best ways to naturally tell the viewer where to look–besides using depth of field, rule of thirds and more. But they’re very important in regards to portraits because of the way that it can make a body specifically look. The folks over at Weekly Imogen talk about specifics like using corners and other lines based on the specifics of the portraiture (such as posing.)
In Part One of this series of features on how to improve your landscape photography I spoke about the different methods of supporting your camera to avoid the dreaded camera shake, to allow you to shoot longer exposures and to aid in composition. This week I am going to talk about the filters I use on the camera and to show you what a difference they can make to the final image.
Photography is nothing without light. In fact photography is derived from the Greek phōs "light" and graphé "representation by means of lines" or "drawing". These two words together meaning "drawing with light".
For landscape photography light is everything and while an image can be planned in advance to some extent, the light is down to the weather on the day you choose to go out to get the planned image.
This is the 23rd episode of Lightroom Quick Tips where I give a single, quick Lightroom tip. Often, when taking long exposure shots at night, street lamps wi...

Iridient digital has released a major upgrade to it’s Raw Processing software Iridient Developer. I’ve covered this software numerous times on the blog, in particular in relation to it’s ability to decode Fuji X-Trans files. Version 3 is a significant upgrade over version 2 and has a lot of new features in it. The update has addressed most of the (few) criticisms that I’ve had of the software in the past, and it now has a lot of functionality for processing images.
