📊 One chart. A generational shift in plain sight.

In early June, AI usage dropped 70% overnight.
Not because AI is less useful.
Because school ended.

When students log off, the traffic disappears.
They’re not “cheating” — they’re thinking, learning, and creating with AI as their first instinct.

The younger generation is already fluent.
The older generation is still asking, “Should we use this?”
That’s the gap — and the opportunity.

Come September, the spike will return.

And an AI-first workforce will be one step closer.

NEJM's latest perspective to combat the spread of inaccurate health information: "Training Health Communicators — The Need for a New Approach". Link to the article in the comments
Key takehomes:
⭐ Academic and clinical institutions MUST support clinicians and researchers to engage on nontraditional media platforms.
⭐ The need for HCP communication skills now extends beyond the clinic - we must learn to meet patients where they are (i.e. on social media)
⭐ Effective HCP communicators should be equipped to proactively disseminate accurate clinical information across platforms—including podcasts, Twitter X, TikTok, and LinkedIn.

Personally, I feel very strongly about this. In certain therapeutic fields close to my heart there is a LOT of misinformation by 'influencers', which is causing real harm to patients who believe what they hear. And yet HCPs are reluctant to weigh in for fear of backlash or lack of confidence as to how to interact. What do you think?

Must read in PNAS. | Jean-Louis Mergny | Notebook or My Personal Learning Network | Scoop.it
Must read in PNAS.  Fraud is a more pervasive phenomenon than generally believed. This article uncovers some of the strategies used by fraudsters. I chose this graph (Fig 5B) to illustrate the magnitude of the problem (note the log scale).

Paper mills products are fabricated, fake papers sold for a fee to authors. Suspected paper mill products have been doubling every 18 months! An illustration cited in this paper: "In a 2022–2023 survey of medical residents at tertiary hospitals in southwest China, 46.7% of respondents self-reported buying and selling papers"

"Large groups of editors and authors appear to have cooperated to facilitate publishing fraud. Networks of linked fraudulent articles suggest industrial scale of production"

Link to the PNAS paper “The entities enabling scientific fraud at scale are large, resilient, and growing rapidly” and blog of one of the coauthors in comments.

Note that there is one category of entity the authors do not mention: universities. I am not sure all of them actively discourage fraud... if only to raise in rankings.

The Ghost publishing platform released version 6.0 today. The upgrade just went live on my site, bringing with it a significant step forward in how content is shared and accessed.

With built-in support for ActivityPub, readers can now follow posts from my website, Studio6 by Neville Hobson, directly from Mastodon, Threads, Bluesky, and more - no extra integrations or third-party tools needed.

Ghost has also introduced native analytics and tighter publishing tools, but it’s the decentralised access that stands out. It’s not only about syndication - it’s also about reshaping how creators connect with audiences beyond traditional platforms.

The fediverse is no longer hypothetical. It’s here, and it's working.

I have to admit that I’ve always been extremely skeptical about the idea of LLMs generating novel and exciting ideas. Reviewing existing work—fine. Suggesting new analyses—okay. But coming up with new ideas? I haven’t seen enough to be convinced. On a personal level, I don’t find AI-generated ideas to be creative, interesting, or novel, and often, when you dig into the details, they fall apart like sandcastles.

This very exciting paper by Chenglei Si (from Yang Diyi group) takes things a step further. Both human experts (from the NLP space) and AI suggest novel research ideas. These ideas are reviewed and rated by another set of reviewers, and the results suggest that AI-generated ideas are better in terms of novelty, excitement, and effectiveness.

Here’s the cool part—experts then try to execute these ideas, investing significant effort, and reviewers evaluate the final products. The results seem to flip, with the execution of human-generated projects rated more favorably. Why do human ideas seem to stand the test of execution better? The authors suggest it may be because humans consider more details during the ideation process. We still don’t know for sure. Very exciting nevertheless.

My recent experiences using AI to help write scientific papers have been both exciting and alarming. They’ve led me to the (pretty obvious) conclusion that AI is going to completely turn the academic writing process upside down. My takeaway: “Publish or perish” is giving way to “perish by publishing.” In an era of AI-assisted writing, authors must ensure accuracy and integrity, taking full responsibility for any AI-generated text. Quality, not quantity, will define scholarly survival.

A Nature paper on the peer-review crisis. | Jean-Louis Mergny

A Nature paper on the peer-review crisis. | Jean-Louis Mergny | Notebook or My Personal Learning Network | Scoop.it
A Nature paper on the peer-review crisis. Applies both to journal and grant submissions. See link in comments.

On a personal note, I now decline unpaid review invitations unless they come from society, community and other non-profit journals or organizations... or if I have published extensively in said journal or the editor is a true friend. Simply said, I am not going to do pro bono work for a for-profit publisher.

Among the proposed answers to this problem and my reactions:
- two publications reported on the results of experiments to pay journal reviewers (interesting)
- Elsevier now uses structured peer review at more than 300 of its journals. (I had a look on how this is structured: a pure abomination in my opinion)
- Organize peer-review independently of journals (seems cool!)
- Post publication peer review (definitely needed)
- Publish all reviewing reports (I do not mind if they are anonymous- just curious about the comments - how helpful they were. Also a good way to spot fraudulent peer review).

The problem is so widespread that the publication of fraudulent science is outpacing the growth rate of legitimate scientific publications. The authors argue these findings should serve as a wake-up call to the scientific community, which needs to act before the public loses confidence in the scientific process.

The study, "The entities enabling scientific fraud at scale are large, resilient and growing rapidly," was published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

"Science must police itself better in order to preserve its integrity,"
