Music Powers Top 2 YouTube Channels, 868 Million Views Monthly - hypebot

Music - more than cats, stunts and sophomoric humor - drives YouTube, according to a new Nielsen analysis.

Colton Halley's curator insight, September 22, 2019 9:09 PM
This is interesting to me, the top youtube channels, view wise, are usually music channels. A music video can awuire up millions of views in a couple weeks, blowing away any content creator by miles. And to them, isnt fair. The HypeBot seems almost immature, but somewhat truthful.

YouTube revenues tipped to top $3.6bn this year

YouTube revenues tipped to top $3.6bn this year | New Music Industry | Scoop.it

When Google bought YouTube for $1.65bn in 2006, there were plenty of doubters. That price is looking pretty good now, though: Citi analyst Mark Mahaney has predicted that YouTube’s 2012 revenues will top $3.6bn.

A figure which in his words, is “likely 50% greater than Yahoo!’s Display Advertising total and right-in-line with Netflix’s total subscription revenue. We really doubt whether most investors realize how big/important YouTube has become.”

Metric: The band that became a label - Globe and Mail

Metric: The band that became a label - Globe and Mail | New Music Industry | Scoop.it

I'm at the band's West End studio in Toronto, and Metric is reacting to good news. They've just found out that their single Youth Without Youth had debuted at No. 1 on Mediabase Canadian Alternative Radio Airplay chart – the first time that feat has been accomplished. Much jubilation, naturally.

And then singer Emily Haines has a second thought on the achievement: “What does it even mean?” she asks. It's a good question, one for which I have no answer.

What I can say is what the chart-topping probably means – that someone at Metric Music International, the band's own label, did their job. MMI , as you might guess, is in the business of Metric music. And, apparently, business is good.

In research for a Master’s dissertation at the London School of Economics, Theodore Gilette suggests that young people’s attitudes towards file sharing may be connected to the idea that this group see the internet as a gift-giving medium. In an original survey he found that 81% of 18-25 year olds think illegal downloads can be justified.
